Hi

I have an old fly rod that i havent used in a few years. I gave it a cast recently and am having trouble getting the line out through the runners for a decent cast. Would this be because the line is old and lost its protective coating? and/or could it have something to do with the runners on the rod?

Also, the rod is a 9 weight Gillies Delux which i bought when i first started fly fishing and am wondering how these compare with newer, more expensive rods on the market in terms of casting length?

Thanks
Dane

If your line is old it wouldn't help your casting. Inspect it for cracks, if so it needs to go in the bin. If not try a fly line cleaner, a clean line will make a big difference.
Most expensive rods cast well however you can find cheaper rods that will cast just as good. I would look for something with a life time warranty.. I think Black Shadows fly rods do and they cast okay. I am sure there are quite a few on the market these days. A good tackle shop should let you have a cast before you buy. I hope that helps. ;)

Hi Dane,

Probably the line and not the rod. If line has lost its protective coating - the smoooth bit, then will not flow through the guides. Give teh line a clean and check for cracking etc

Cheers
