Flying Kayakers

hi guys, since the purchase of a kayak 6 months ago, and my discovery of soft plastics my fly rod has sat in the cupboard, but last week I got my hands on a Lefty Kreh casting techniques video and it's got me excited about doing some swoffing again. Does anyone on this forum fish from a kayak? I'll be giving it a go at wivenhoe on sunday, but keen to hear any hints or issues people might foresee while fly fishing from the kayak.

I used to flyfish out of my canoe. Biggest problem was the loose line that lay at my feet getting tangled. Just like fishing in a normal boat, keep it uncluttered and that makes it easier. Also can't cast as far as when you are standing.

Thanks goddy, distance shouldnt matter too much can get a lot closer to the strike zone in the kayak.

Everything gets in the way. You need to have it all sorted before setting out, and even then you still manage to get the line tangled on the most ridiculous things.

You can try using a large flat bucket between your legs, but it tends to work on the hip joints when you try to sit and cast like a little budha.

Especially on inlets, estuaries etc a kayak is great for that. Plus you get a free workout, fresh air etc.

If you have rear well area behind your seat try sitting sidesaddle and useing the well as a stripping basket. you will be casting across the yak rather than along it..... less area to get tangled up with.

Here's the yak as it was when I bought it, no major changes at this stage, but keen to mount a sounder up front this week.
