More NSW Government Fish Stockings

The NSW Government has further boosted recreational fishing stocks by releasing 680,000 thousand of juvenile native fish and trout into lakes and dams around the State, NSW Minister for Fisheries, Eddie Obeid, said today.

NSW Fisheries staff had released 75,000 rainbow trout fingerlings at Eucumbene Dam and 25,000 rainbow trout fingerlings at Lake Jindabyne in the past ten days, as part of the Government’s Statewide fish stocking program.

Also in southern NSW, 20,000 Murray cod and 131,000 Silver Perch were released into the Burrinjuck Dam (Yass) and 45,000 Golden Perch were released into Lake Hume (Albury).

Today, 120,000 Silver Perch and 170,000 Golden Perch were released into Wyangala Dam near Cowra.

In Central NSW, Golden Perch fly were released last week into the Ben Chifley Dam (20,000), Carcoar Dam (30,000), Lake Canobolas (4,000) and Gosling Creek Reservoir (4,000).

Silver Perch were also released into Gosling Creek Reservoir (3,000), Carcoar Dam (30,000) and Lake Canobolas (3,000).


"This is good news for anglers. In around two years, these fish will be big enough to be caught."

The Minister said the NSW Government is spending $1.5 million on its fish stocking program during 2001/2002.

"This includes $300,000 from the Recreational Fishing Freshwater Trust with funds from the recreational fishing licence. The Trust has also allocated $200,000 to the successful dollar-for-dollar stocking scheme where community contributions of between $1000 and $5000 are matched with funds from the scheme for local stockings."

Mr Obeid said further releases of trout and native fish are planned over the coming months.
