I've had a Garmin 126 model I think it was in my big boat. Great unit.
I've now got a Garmin GPS III plus. A little handheld unit that takes AA batteries and will also run on 12v. I've got the best of both worlds - plug into the boat for a days fishing and take it out for the 4wd and walking. [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]
Why Garmin - that's the model my local boat shop stocked.

Harry,

I have no experience with the larger GPS models, but I do own a handheld Garmin GPS-12 and have used it extensively over the last 2 yrs in my job and for recreation. It has good, easily used features and the interface is intuitive. You can upgrade the software from the Garmin website for free, however when I tried this it was unsuccessful and I had to send the unit to Garmin to fix. Their after sales service was very good and they upgraded the software and returned it free of charge. My intention is to get a mount for the boat console and one for the 4WD too, so I don't have to rely on the units own AA batts. You might consider getting a Magellan SporTrak Map which is a handheld GPS that also has a mapping capability. I have never used one though so I can't talk from experience. I think perhaps their screen may be to small to display all relevant info.

Cheers
Pete
