Does anyone have any info on these new models? How much do they increase running time (if at all)?

How do they compare with the maximiser on Minn Kotas?

MotorGuide Digital Range Arrives

Now available in Australia and New Zealand are the new range of digital MotorGuide trolling motors. Significant improvements have been made to power these ever-useful electric motors into the 21st century. The launch coincides with the release of other new models that can all be seen in the new look MotorGuide brochure.

As it has done often over the last 40 years, MotorGuide has designed cutting edge technology into its line of electric trolling motors. This time it is digital technology, and with it comes a significant improvement in variable speed trolling motor performance, reliability, capability and serviceability.

MotorGuide digital models now make trolling even easier, offering a longer life, and unmatched reliability with sonar interference almost eliminated. Other key features include:
· Digital module is fully protected from the elements
· Runs cooler and longer
· Sustained battery life for more fishing time
· 3 year limited warranty

These awesome new improvements have been tried and tested in the 2004 AFC Series with both Team Savage and Team Mercury boats equipped with 82-pound Saltwater Series digital models. With team members saying they now, ‘wouldn’t use anything other’.

Digital technology is being used in a wide variety of electronic products today, including cell phones, audio equipment and more. MotorGuide is using that same technology to not only provide immediate benefits for today’s motors, but to also greatly expand future capabilities.

The new MotorGuide design uses digital electronics as the “brains” of its variable speed models. Although the changes are internal and out of sight, meaning anglers won’t be able to see a difference, MotorGuide owners will definitely recognize and appreciate the benefits.

The new MotorGuide Digital System called Digital Guardian in its variable speed models replaces the conventional Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) analog controller systems. Analog systems, long the norm for variable speed motors and still used by other trolling motor companies, are susceptible to inherent problems because of the electrical complexity of analog dynamics, a primary contributor to trolling motor failure.

However, MotorGuide’s exclusive new system uses digital clearer and crisper analysis and control of signals. It also prospers from Digital’s simplified communication process that eliminates many of the wires, transistors and high-current switches responsible for most motor failure and sonar interference issues. What that means for anglers is greatly improved reliability and durability. But the improvements don’t stop there.

The MotorGuide Digital control module is totally encapsulated in a waterproof epoxy pod that is further protected from all elements by being placed in the trolling motor’s lower unit. Its location directly next to the motor’s high-current field-effects transistors provides maximum energy efficiency and a more consistent current flow. That means a more efficient and more reliable trolling motor performance, and a longer motor life.

The close proximity of the two components also virtually eliminates the “noise” that interferes with sonar readings. In competitive systems, the controllers are typically located in the foot pedal or trolling motor head. All the wires and the distance between those locations and the electric motor in the lower unit are largely responsible for the interference problems and reduced efficiency. Those issues go away with the short distance and fewer wires of the MotorGuide Digital design.

Furthermore, MotorGuide’s Digital Guardian doesn’t just benefit its variable speed, foot-controlled models, but also its hand-controlled versions. Digital technology allows reverse-speeds often found in hand-controlled models to be built right into the controlling module, resulting in improved performances in power and efficiency.

In the unlikely event that a Digital module does fail, its location in the lower unit makes it easily accessible and replaceable by MotorGuide service centres across the country. This contrasts greatly with the service and parts issues previously associated with analog PWM controller systems in which electronic failures usually required board replacements in both the lower unit and in the foot-control or motor’s head.

All MotorGuide variable speed models feature the new digital design. These include: Digital Steering DS Series, PTSv Tracking Motors and select foot- and hand-controlled models in the Freshwater – Bow series, Freshwater – Transom series and the Great White Saltwater series.
