View Full Version : Old Mags ? Article Cruise Craft 585 BR

I am hoping that someone on here might have some old boat magazines laying around that have an article/test of the Cruise Craft Galaxy 585 BR.
Would be about 1990 as the boat won the ABIA boat of the year that year, but the model ran from 1989 to 1997 I think.
I have tried the magazines directly and Cruise Craft so far without any luck, (Modern Boating are yet to get back to me).
If you have anything, would it be possible to scan it (about 400 - 600dpi) and email it to me.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Cheers,
Paul.

Hi Fishfeeder
Yep got that mag (Jeff Websters, Top 100 Secondhand Fishing Boats 1985-2000), it is responsible for my new found interest actually.
I had info on them from a while back but it was lacking a weight, using the Cruisecraft brochere I guessed (wrongly) they were getting a bit too heavy for a V6 commo to tow. That new mag quotes a 1300kg tow weight which is fine.
Would you head out a few miles offshore in it on a good day to have a fish ?. Would not be the primary use ofcourse being a bowrider, but if the situation presented ?
Would you have any pics you'd be prepared to email to me ?, I'm trying to get a feel for their general condition these days, what layout (so far have only seen one bucket, one back to back and a wrap around 3/4 rear lounge) and spec they came out in.
What hp motor do you have, how is it performance/fuel wise ?, btw which bay do you head out in ?
Sorry for the barrage of questions, I didn't expect to find anyone on here that owned one, thanks for your help.
Cheers,
Paul

Look up,
www.boatpoint.com.au (I think this is correct) they have hundreds of boat test reports on the web-site for you to view.
Otherwise try a google search on boat tests.

Hi Ryan,
I have searched and googled the hell out of it, with little success, best thing I have found is for the 585 XL (the half cab):

If you come across anything in your travels though please let me know
Thanks for the advice.

Paul,
I fish mainly in Morton Bay (brisbane) its great for 3 guys to fish from with room to spare. very stable in the bay but i dont go fishing out there if the winds above 15 knots. there is nothing better then sitting back with the cd player pumping out the latest hits with a beer in one hand and a rod in the other, they are great for the jumpinpin area with the girlfriend who hates fishing but likes the area. It has a 200hp 2 stroke on the back and you get 85km/h easy on a good day, but drinks fuel like a football team, i think a 150hp 4 stroke would be fine with the right prop. i 've had 7 adults in it down the coast for a fun day on the water and it really needed the 200 with that load of people and gear.
I will get a few pictures and put them up here for you.

Hi Brett,
I'm in Sydney so I don't know the area that well, but assume it can get pretty rough out there, which is good to know it can take it. When you say stable, do you mean at rest, underway or both ?.
Have you ever had solid water over the bow ? a mate had a lewis bowrider that had this problem with simple boat wakes, surprised the hell out of me, as I was sitting in the bow when I found out, and only had experinece with higher sided cuddy cabs beforehand.
How popular is the bow area while your underway ? this is part of my interest for the bowrider, I found a lot of people I went out with in my old boat wanted to get up front, but it just wasn't safe being a cuddy cab.
Wow, big motor - bet it boogies, I had a 200hp Merc on my last boat but it was bigger/heavier though (2250L signature - hull 300/350kg heavier), on the galaxy it would be a weapon.
Thanks for your help, if you have any dramas posting the pix I can pm you my 'home' email address.
Cheers,
Paul

Paul,
Never had water go over the front, It is very stable at rest and under way, drift fishing with 3 on one side is no problems at all. under way in smooth water you can have 2 up front and 2 down the back but if it gets rough i dont like people up front as it rides better with more weight down the back then trim the motor for the best ride. The 200hp is over kill but fun !!
I am in the process of finding a new trailer for it as the old one is stuffed.
I wont say its the best boat for fishing but it does the job easy and if you want to take a group of people for a day on the water its tops. dont know of many other styles of boats that you can get 7 people in and everyone has a seat to sit on and feels safe.
Hope all this is helping
tight lines

Hi Brett,
Yeah, it's all very helpfull.
I am primarily after a fun social boat, that can perform secondary duties of fishing or skiing, so the Galaxy sounds like it fits the bill.
Were you specifically looking for a Galaxy when you bought or did it just come up at the right time ?
Do you have any tips or areas you think should get specific attension on a first inspection ? and/or any quirks that you have found which bug you ?
Thanks again.
Anyone else's help with old magazine articles would still be very much appreciated.
Cheers,
Paul
