Hi, I am ordering a quintrex hornet trophy 435 and am looking at a 40hp 4stroke. I am a trout fisherman on the lakes of Tasmania and am wanting your opinion on a Yamaha tiller steer.

Hi Troutboy,
I have a Yammy 40HP 4Stk Tiller on my 425 Edgetracker. It’s almost out of warranty (2 years old). I could not think of a better motor for my boat. I have never had any problems with it, maybe that is because I don’t use it enough....
It is Electric start and trim and tilt, which I would recommend. It can be started quite easily with the rope even when cold which is a good back up.
The good thing with the tiller steer is the amount of room in the boat and less maintenance with the cables ect.
It has plenty of go for my size of boat and very economical as well.

Hi Tony, Thanks for your reply. The yamies seem to have a good reputation. The model you have is the way I was thinking of going. It is good to hear from someone who has one. The tiller steer was my thought as I mainly flyfish and drift spin so the more free floor space the better. We never get to use them enough but something is better than nothing. Thanks again and tight lines.

Iank from this site has a 50HP Yammy 4 banger on the back of his, and it goes very nicely! The 40 would handle it well, but the 50 will give you just that little bit more

Hey, I found a review of some 4 stroke 40's and it also puts a couple of DFI 2s 40's in there too, here it is: http://www.boatpoint.com.au/portal/alias__boatpointau/tabID__200859/ArticleID__1959704/DesktopDefault.aspx
Personally, I like the Johnson/Suzuki because it has EFI and also chain drive rather than belts-chain's don't break, belts do. Cheers.

G'day troutboy, I have a quintrex 420 explorere trophy with a 40hp 4st efi mercury on it and thats a great combo. A mate has a 435 hornet trophy with the same motor and its fine with only a couple of blokes in it but if he loads it up with a bit of gear it struggles a bit and he wishes he had the extra power of a 50. When we were up north around darwin earlier in the year he had trouble getting it to plane with 3 blokes and a heap of gear, and i mean a heap of gear, probably to much. Horses for courses i suppose, depends on what you are going to be doing with it and budget all come into play. Whatever you choose as long as you are happy with it thats the main thing.
Cheers John

I have a 435 Hornet Trophy, i put a Yammy 4stroke 50 on the back, with a few blokes and their gear it still takes a little while to get up. When it does it goes very well. When on the front casting deck i can't hear the motor running.
I have had quite a few Johnsons and a 4stroke Mariner but the Yammy is the pick of them all, runs on the smell of an oily rag as well.
Cheers,
John.

Thank you all for your help. With your comments and talking to others I have decided to order the 4st 40hp Yammie. Seems to have everything I want. Will let you know how it goes.
Cheers :)
