time to learn the plus,s and minus,s of having pods a while back we all read a great post about a ausfish member who rebuilt his alum boat in his post he stated he had side pods and they worked great he stated that he got much more stability ,speed and a saving in fuel plus the option of a larger motor to catch fish in this area you're looking at 20nm's wide so pods are worth a punt to me i have an old clark abalone that i already have fixed alum stabilizers on which help me keep my feet for a few knots more the options are pods that follow the shape of your boat like a hull extension or above your water line so they don't come in to play while planning but act as flotation stabilizers at rest i bought mine off a ausfisher two alum 55ltr pods rough v shape they are baffled inside a plug at bottom of v and two inspection hatches on top they came off a glass boat so i bolted and black gooed them on not knowing where exactly to put them i opted for the bottom of the v level with bottom of hull if you can visualize the v shaped pod running vertical with leg of motor i left enough of a gap between pods for the motor leg to get a full swing for steering next the water test ps i also changed motors went from 70 hp 3cyn to a 90hp 4cyn [about double the weight ] [bought off a ausfisher of course] put it in the burrum river ran around at speeds up to 28mph 1st the leg had to be right down even up a bit it cavitated and reduced water flow to motor i was surprised by the increase in buoyancy i leaned over the pods to get an idea what was happening at the prop it looked like the pods were acting as a tunnel ? then tried to rock boat side to side there was very very little movement about 1/4 of the pod was below waterline at speed or at rest the stability was great turning was great to absolutly flat at speed my wife watching from the shore [chicken] said the boat looked flat skiming across the water and thats how it felt so all round a success i think if i did it again i would have the pods higher so the prop could catch more water yesterday i did try leaving the bottom plugs out of the pods thinking some water ballast might pull me down a bit but even though they took in a few inches of water there was no diff; just enough water for live bait will have the plugs out when wide forsure this is experimental any ideas or input is welcome i guess what i'm trying for is a bigger or modern boat performance from my original old boat

A few pictures would help, just cant quite visualise this one.
Sounds inventive though.

guessing it's a bit like the stabilcraft with the pods. Only the pods are towards the stern. :-?

mate i'm thinking its real good mate i picked them up in caloundra shortly ater seeing you now that they are on and working it just seems so logical i was originally looking for two alum aircraft fuel tanks to weld on sides nz is a very inventive place stabilizers have always being used it feels like the pods make your boat stable far in excess of there size no worries about taking out an overweight mate now and remember the purpose of life he who dies with the biggest beer gut wins
time to learn the plus,s and minus,s of having pods a while back we all read a great post about a ausfish member who rebuilt his alum boat in his post he stated he had side pods and they worked great he stated that he got much more stability ,speed and a saving in fuel plus the option of a larger motor
Pods built as air tanks mounted behind the transom and with the bottom as a continuation of the planing surface can be very good on some boats and bad on others - there is no reliable result unless they are well designed.
Benefits are:
they will decrease trim angle getting onto plane
they can decrease or stop porpoising
allow lower planing speed
increase stability, particularly at rest
decrease draft of boat
allow a convenient step to mount and dismount from the boat
may increase boat speed if boat is too heavily loaded at transom
the resulting decreased trim angle at low speeds will improve ride at low speeds - particulary when combined with the ability to plane at lower speeds
Problems are:
can decrease boat trim angle too much and therefore decrease speed and/or make boat bow steer or dangerous in following sea
make water well up behind boat when in reverse and therefore decrease backing ability
I therefore recommend well designed pods and I call them afterplanes. There are however many traps in designing afterplanes. In most boats used in different loading and speed conditions, this means that they should have the planing surface above the boat planing surface. If they were easy to design, most boat manufacturers would be installing them or at least have them as an option.
Remember that a trim tab (eg Bennett) is effectively an adjustable, but smaller version and without providing flotation benefits.

nevd great input thank you being out 3 runs great so far at speed i cant have any trim [not sure if that is good or bad] at slow speed when crabbing in the shallows i could use trim as normal reversing no worries so far will get some pic's done cheers ps if you can imagine the stern normal alum boat with a v shaped pod on each side so the tip of v is level with bottom of boat so there is not much of the pods come into play when planing they do act as a tunnel with prop wash

Let me see if I'm reading this and picturing this correctly....
Viewed from the rear, the boat looks like a tri-hull with the pods mounted underneath the hull and on the outer edges??
(PIC- B)
Or are the pods mounted closer to the keel (PIC A) :-/
wanynes cods i mean pods ;D ;D ;D

They're not pods, they're big floaties aren't they :D.
I thought you ment pods as in looking like fuel pods on the space shuttle when they launch it.

that would be great too that was my orig idea i,m thankful i did,nt have them made to fit my hull eg hull extension type mine have turned out sort of inbetween that and flotation pods off to the reef in the morning hugh snapper for tea got to get one bigger then hooter got on tuesday gee seadog guess my descriptive powers are crap ;D
Bloody hell, they're huge! :o
How are they attached?
I'd be a bit concerned about the flexing of the transom where they mount - could lead to cracking.
cheers,
Owen

55ltrs ea full of water 110lbs boat is a clark abalone not a tinnie tinnnee i was going to have them welded on but the experts said that would be unnecessary there are 6 bolts in ec pod plus whole tube of superflex per side the black inspection hatches are so you have access to the bolts they were originally on a glass boat with a outboard pod inbetween them then all bolted togeather i did not want o/b pod there was no advantage to my rig i could see plus i hoped to gain a small cat ;effect with the side pods ec pod is divided into two sections with two baffles inside

55ltrs ea full of water 110lbs
Is that completely full. Cos it would be 115kgs (253lb).
Either you have a cat or mono or is there such A thing as MONOCAT------ HEY THAT IS A NEW WORD..----- Designed by Wayneoro the pods look good I would have made steps out of them after all you have plenty of buoyancy the PODS are actually acting more like Trim pads.. total of 160 liters of extra buoyancy will trully keep your back side up.. My only concern is that they are a bit close to the motor --the distance will be ok at the transom but would need to adge out about 50 mm on the end perhaps 75mm.. I like the concept and it is a solution to heavy sunk motors.. I would Fill the pods with NORFORM EXPANDING RESIN--- good for buoyancy one mixed liter will produce 25-30 litres of foam... No need for plugs.. but in your case you need to get to the screws that hold the pods to the boat... when?? but you can always scrape the resin away to remove the pods... I like your idea and it will work well... good luck with it .... Ahoj
Reason why i suggested to angle the pods out on the outside is that at this stage your pods will act as a rudder and will try to make the boat go straight and turning will be restricted.. see how it tests out first...

good test yesterday 8 n/ms wide boof followed in his boat [to be sure to be sure] could'nt fault anythink was running at 18mls hr in a light sea 2ft swell steering was good [lucky as i can,t alter anything except up or down a tad] thanks for your advise ahoy but i could only put them where they would fit and hope to luck out cheers

would like to work out the +s or -s of running with no trim nevd has said thet you get a better ride at lower speeds and good stability i can confirm that now but what is the diff; with fuel economy should the motor be lowered more so that some trim can be used
Did you manage to lift the boat @ 18 mph or below that speed and how long did it take? at full speed with a 90 hp outboard you will eventually only ride your boat 80% on the PODS and reach speeds of over 40 mph according to may calculations.. I assume your Abalone is 4.95 m

Some info:
Beavertail's R&D department has developed new flotation technology that will flat out revolutionize the performance of your mud motor, period!
Maximum motor efficiency is obtained by creating the longest plane possible. Beavertail has taken this concept one step further by pushing the design envelope, thus creating the ultimate performance enhancing devices.
Beavertail Performance Pods, when attached to your existing jon boat, will change the game forever
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Price
$325.00 + $25 s&h (for two) - Includes drain holes and plugs
Factory installation on your boat is $65
Size
Medium: Fits boats with 36" to 42" bottoms
Large: Fits boats with 42" to 96" bottoms
Performance PodTM Features
200 lbs. of extra floatation.
Eliminates the negative performance associated with the weight of 4-stroke air-cooled motor.
Eliminates tail drag associated with shallow water running.
Jon boats float virtually flat and draft considerably less, giving you almost unlimited capabilities in shallow water.
Dramatically increases out of the hole take off.
Funnels water to the propeller in the shallowest of environments, giving you the ability to start out and get on plane in conditions like you never have before.
Eliminates virtually all transom back splash. (With most mud motors running on 16" transoms, this is an absolute safety necessity.) Most jon boats sink because of over-weighting and freeboard back splash; with Beavertail's Performance PodsTM, those days are over.
No longer will you have to worry about over turning your mud motor; Performance Pods will act as a stop to help eliminate death spins.
Reduces engine laboring.
Reduces fuel consumption.
Compliments engine power trim.
Engineered not only for strength, but also can be used as a built-in dog ladder and sitting platform.
