View Full Version : Confused - Do I need a little 4stroke?

I am looking to put an auxcilary motor on a 14' heavy glass boat for trolling and as a back up. Also looking at using it on a canoe.
I have been told 4stroke would be better then a 2 stroke when trolling - less vibration and smell. But it weighs more and will effect the canoe.
Now I have been told a 2 stroke 4hp would be better to push the boat around (1100kg) and lighter on the canoe but what about the vibration and smell.
Any advise please?

Cruize,
What fuel type is your main motor on the boat?

Unleaded but the main motor has direct oil injection from seperate oil tank. Why?

Why do you need an auxillary on your 14 ft glass boat? Modern outboards are very reliable if serviced regularly and if you have an inline water seperating fuel filter, plus you are unlikely to go too far offshore, so if you have a marine radio (or even a mobile phone) on board, you can always call for a tow if required.
What type of trolling and for what species? You have a 70 hp 2 stroke? What is the idling speed on the water? Not too many trolling applications you want to do less that 2 knots.
Maybe just get a dedicated outboard for your canoe?

I guess what fuel you use may influence what motor. If you have premix 2 stroke, no use putting a 4 stroke on.
If using plain unleaded, go for a 4 stroke.

Hi J
Well yeah I do have a 1999 Johnson 70hp 2st which goes great but I can only get it down to about 4knotts gps ground speed. I thought that it was a bit fast for trolling awoonga and other lakes. Also it's a bit noisy and smelly. But if I am wrong feel free to let me know, cause I'm just learning.

yes, 4 knots is too fast for barra and flathead.
A cheaper option than an aux would be a low pitch or cut down prop for those occasions you need to go slow.
