View Full Version : transducer on inside floor of tinnie

I am chasing a second hand sounder for my tinnie (any one got a cheap one) and was thinking of sticking the transducer under the rear seat in salastic or simular because it will most likely get ripped off the transom (rough, I know), so will it shoot thru a ali hull like glass or not?.

Blaze, sounds extreme.
What is wrong with transom mounting ?????
Buy a slide to avoid hasty drunken retreives .
Not sure about shooting through ali, ???

Hi saurian
the tinnie will be drgged over logs, submerged and semi submerged and dragged and carried over rocks. Now I know its easy to fit a slide mount but its still on the outside of the boat and is bound to get smashed eventually (most probably sooner rather than later), hence the second hand fishfinder and the question as to wether it will shoot through ali. If I cant do it I will probable not put one in.

Not 100% sure but i don't think so. I have never seen a tinnie with thru hull transducer.

Blaze,

your a genius ;)

Been thinking of how to mount the transducer for my sons tinny. We intend draging it around similar company to you ;). #I am going to mount mine in a bead of silicon, I believe the key is no Airbubles :)

Shouldn't be a problem thru the ally but I will check with a mate who works in the ally boat trade. will get back to ya.

cheers

I had a look in my sounders manual (Lowrance X85). It describes how to mount the transducer to shoot through the hull. It specifically mentions fiberglass hulls and there is no reference to alloy hulls.

blaze - did it with a glass boat and have tried it 2 ways - first was with the transducer in small pipe which was filled with glycerine - worked well but a bitch to fill and seal. when I had to redo it because the floor was rotten just used silicone - use plenty avoid bubles as S_K mentions. Do not know about ali although in theory it is just another medium to pass the signal through.

blaze iv'e done it with a button or outboard transducer with silicon. it worked ok in water depth to 40 odd meters at a slow speed .
if u only have a standard tran. I would try a wetbox.

good luc

Mate I do it with my canoe and the tinnie b4 i got the slide ;) go to the local craft shop and get some plasticine. no airbubbles is the only thing to worry about!! although if bouncing around it might come off but it should just need to be squished back on :)

Cheers

Blaze, make sure silicon is ali ok.
By that i mean sikaflex, not silicon.
Anyway roughed it a fair bit with standard old tranducers screwed to hull
Make sure plastic clips are not to permanent and she will bounce up out of the locked position everytime.
But i have had one depart from tranducer cable at planing speed after big knock.
Anyway sounds like good fishing if you get to bash your way around....

Hey Blaze, I tried to mount a trany for the Furuno thru hull in ReBait ( platey ). I was told it would NOT work ( successfully ). Was told to cut hole in hull and mount it flush from the inside with very strong bracing/ brackets.

Ended up on an external mount. Same unit mounted inside a glass boat had no probs.

INteresting to see how you go !

Sorry to resurrect an old topic guys.

Just wondering if you went ahead with this blaze? If yes, was it successful?

We're thinking of trying this in our young fella's tinny.

Looks like we may get to test the idea before you then. Ross broke something on his sounder (where it clips into the holder) and managed to end up with a new one. Not sure how that happened as I remember quite adamantly saying NO in the shop! ::)

Hi blaze,
I was talking to Kev last night. Our two families are escaping from "life stuff" this weekend.... a semi-deserted island and a bit of fishing might get him chatting again :)

First up I would like to thank Grand marlin (pete) for the sounder, got pete, thanks
Ok so here we go
sounder mounted and I have used non acidic cure silicon and fitted the transducer under the rear thawt seat.
So I will now let it set for 24hrs and hope to get a test before heading to 1770 on friday.
will keep you all posted to the outcome.
Before I test I will let you all know that this is a Piraha 3 sounder by humminbird so its not a super dooper sounder and the out come I am trying to achieve is to just get some idea of bottom structure and not to pin point fish etc
cheers

first report
When I first stuck the transducer under the thawt seat and turned it on it read 0.8m, my thoughts were its not going to work. Turned it back on after leaving over night and it read 0.0, things are looking up. Took the boat down to the ramp (blowin 40knts) and pushed her off the trailer and went for a bit a a ride in the river. Seems to be working ok at a slow pace but the depth reading changes from say 1.8 to 152m sometimes when moving a little quicker than I troll at. So at this point it will be fine for what I want but to recommend doing this to read bottom accuratly at planing speed may take some more tinkering.
