I hope these small pics come out okay as this is a great sequence of shots showing a big wild caught Saratoga my brother landed recently. He caught it up near the headwaters of the Kendall River in the gulf. They were everywhere if you could get the lures past the several million sootys also there.

first of all...nice fish. The spectacular fights these bigger fish put up is unreal to witness.
Just wish that your brother new how to handle one properly. The damage done to that fish by holding it like that could of easily killed it ten minutes after it swam away. Dont mean to put a downer on a great fish...but facts is facts!

Please guys .... handle all fish carefully. There is no excuse for pokin' yer mits into their respitatory system.

With all due respect I don't think it was well said. Your point is taken guys but there is no need to be a smart*ss about it hey? >:(

just trying to put it in perspective...would you like someone putting thier mitts in you throat...then hanging you up by your neck? just something to think about.
your bro looks like he had a swim while landing this fish?

Errr.... with all due respect ... I wasn't trying to be a Smart A** about it.
I was stating fact, and I'll say it again.... and again .... and ... if necessary. It does no good to place any object into the respiratory system of any animal ... including the fish. :-[
Not a pretty sight to see heros posing in a photo holding up a big fish by the gills .... it's akin to hanging someone. .... Just a minute Sally ... lets hang Uncle Freddy while we get a photo. :-? :-?

not good enough. You could have made your point with far less inflammatory comments than that. your kiddding yourself if you think you can convince me you weren't being a little over the top with that first comment. Nothing wrong with Elsyium's first comment...........
not happy >:(

:-?I don't think so Daintreeboy .... I can't see his fist inside the gills.
He apears to be resting the bara, and I trust that he looked after her.
Cheers

Nothing wrong with that pic. A simple lip hold whilst supporting the body of the fish across his lap, limiting any strain on the gill area of the fish.
Definately a far cry from holding it verticle by its gill plate!

look very closely at my comments. I said I took your point, just didn't like the smart*ss aspect to it and don't try and kid yourself that it wasn't.
I could quite easily do the same and carry on about ramming a sharp piece of metal into the mouth of some poor fish and fighting it to near death before lifting out of it's breathing environment etc etc etc.
not bothering anymore.

but that arguement would be quite hypocritical wouldnt it!

First of all Daintreeboy i rekon your being hard done by here, its pretty obvious they were being a bit unfair with there comments, they were true and as you said you can take that on all onboard. But it makes it a whole lot more frustrating when someone makes a massive deal out of a little learning curve lol. cq freshie no disrespect here mate think what you said was spot on but in the order you said it.. maybe not. Sorry to play the ref her guys but seriously it upsets me to see these worthless arguments on this website, but anyways Daintreeboy great bloody fish and well done to your brother ay must of stuck up one hell of a fight
Cheers Joel :P

Great fish mate, well worthy of a few coldies ;) .
To hell with all you going on about how the man held the fish, woop doo. Saratoga are one of Australia's toughest and hardiest fish, you can have them out of water with your hand up their @$$ for 60mins if you really want and they will be fine (not that is a done practice but... ya know). It was a perfectly fine hold on the fish and was let free to fight another day in the wild.
This Freshwater fishing section is to applaud those who catch beaut fish and can post their pic's to show the audience, not for people to wonder along and critisice some-1 of holding a fish wrongly. You can approach AusFish if you want to add a section on that if you wish?.

i'll leave the other comments alone, but ripper toga mate and after keeping them in a tank and seeing what those nasty little teeth can do I can see why he wouldn't be sticking his hand in there ;)

Gday all, Thaught I might post a pic of a Toga I caught in PNG. The guy holding it is the late Don Mcpherson from Platapus Fishing line. He thaught it was such a good specimen that he wanted a photo of himself with it. Heres to you Don!!!
scrotty.... absolute stonker toga there too mate, what was it caught on?

Im with Az on this one, thats a beaut fish Scrotty. Judging by the colours looks like he/she was an oldie just waiting to be landed.
What did you catch him on Scrotty? These Toga' are pretty fussy when it comes to lures.
Again, well done mate.
Cheers.

Gday Guys, This fish was caught on an old Lively Lures "Assassin" 75. These are no longer made. The togas in png were a bit of a pain when you were trying to catch Barra. Most of the togas were kept for the PNG Natives as they loved them more than barra because of the high oil content. It was only fair to give them to them as they let us fish their rivers.

Your comments question your on knowledge on the subject of fish preservation. Having caught and handled many 90cm+ togas, I can tell you there heads are NOT designed for taking the weight of their bodies. It is NOT perfectly fine to hold the fish as you mentioned. I also am not having a go at the OP, its no big deal and I am sure they now know how to handle one correctly when they catch another one of these fine specimens.
The people that asked was it eaten, I would certainly hope not, as from what I am told, they are absolutely horrible eating with too many tiny bones and muddy flesh. But hey, they said the same thing about carp and my uncle minces them and eats them like there is no tomorrow. yes, gross!
The freshwater fishing section is to applaud but should also serve to educate and heighten awareness to technique and conservation. If you saw someone you knew to be inappropriate or incorrect on an expert show would you stand up and be heard (ie. write in to show), i know i do and would?
Like I said well done and great fish.
