The last three days l have given Awoonga a miss... Too many boats...and fishing has been tough... so off to Monduran l went....This year there are going to run three Bass comps there so l thought that l might do some homework and just the odd Barra session as well..Fishing was hard... water temp has dropped but...... Kim Bain is just as beautiful as ever... ::)...Now where was l.....Yea...tough...l Targeted bass with spinnerbaits, Jackells, Sliders...even trolled... :-X...nothing....Weed beds,,,Rocky edges... points... not a touch....At the park l talked to a couple of guys that had caught a couple of stonkers.....50+...2 Kg...They where big fish like you see in Big W or Somerset...Caught on the troll using barra lures....They showed me the area that they caught them...The old river bed way up the dam near H...Lots of timber..But still no luck...So what about Barra ?. yep three a`day..not big..750..biggest but hard work.... lots of casting.... Got spanked a couple of times too..But at Monduran you expect that...

Hi Trevor,

They sure were playing hard to get! After 2 fairly solid days of casting at snags up there on New Years eve and new years day we only landed 4 Barra - the biggest being Alistairs fish a tad over 900

Despite the fact it was hard work due to the lower temp, it sure was a great way to see the new year in and certainly beats waking up with a hangover! ;D

p.s. Got the lures - Thanks Mate ;)

Hi Awoonga,
Funny you should mention Kim, We were up there with the Bain clan from Boxing Day til Sat, 2 days of pain in the bum rain and low temps, Friday dawned clear and warmer and the temps came up at last. Brett Jones had some action though no results late in the days, so suggested Sat would be better, so we stayed another day. Sat was better the later the day got and after spending nearly 5 hours up in Bay C, we found some water at 28 deg. The action started with a small forky for me and 25 mins later my 15yo son lost his Barra viginity...WOOOO HOOO what a way to crack it, 902mm 9.9kg. lucky lil bugger, but he had a good guide ;). this pic courtesy of Kim

Cheers Brad

Be interesting to see how the Bass comps go there this year..... should fair a bit better in the cooler months! 3 Barra a day is not bad considering!! Good to see you got a good spanking Too ;D So how cold is cold mate? I'm heading there for a week this week-end..... hopefully the weather gods will let it shine for a few days! But then again 10'' up in the catchment would be good.... cause at 29% it's getting pretty sad :-/ Could live with being a drought breaker 8-)

Cheers Les

Fished monduran for a few hours this morning for 2 barra landed 1 lost and a couple of wacks and no hookup. Fish arnt hitting the lures properly and even the ones i landed were just hooked on the underside of their jaw.

Rob,

You seem to have that place sussed, congratulations on your catch in tough conditions.

Fish arnt hitting the lures properly and even the ones i landed were just hooked on the underside of their jaw.

I've come across similar conditions a few times and, to share my experience, what increased the hookups for me was using smaller lures and fishing them a lot slower....even when I thought I was fishing as slow as I possibly could I slowed it down even more (pauses upwards of 30secs) - it can be painful on the patience though!

Cheers

Hi Brett,
We had both the boats out on the Saturday, Kim, Andre & Lynn in the hot tub, and Dave, Steve and myself in mine. We went up where you suggested, and managed to find enough water to get into C, Andre was driving Kims hot tub, but they kept hitting bottom so the went back minto and further up in B. By the time we had to pull stumps to head home, they had just found water at 27deg, but had no hits.

Thanks for the advice on Friday, and may even catch up if we make a return journey before the school hols end.

Cheers Brad
