I believe that this months BnB will have your answers. Webby has done an article on this.

I personally like the Butterfly technic.

Using Yakka, Whiting etc.

Cut the tail off, slice beside the back bone up to the gill area and both sides of the bait. Remove the back bone. Using 2 gang 6/0 VMC 9255PS, place one hook between the " flaps " and the other through the nose of the bait. Running sinker ( if any ). Bait should sit mid water or a little further down.

Thanks for the advice mate,
1 more question - can you explain "snooding hooks together" or "snelling rigs". I am assuming they are a second hook tied on the main line with a leader?

And obviously you would use a smaller hook for through the front of the dorsal than you would for say a squid bait?

1 more!.....I always get a lot of pike on the jig - they are the main ones I would like to know how to rig live as they are a long awkward bait to me.....

jeez thats 3 questions......

thanks again - this is a top site.

you are right about the snelling, just means attaching another hook above the one already tied onto your leader. I personally use "sliding snells" that way no matter what size bait you use you can slide the front hook up and down the leader. there is a section on sliding snells in Geoff Wilsons book - Complete Book of Fishing Knots and Rigs. Re: hook size, the front hook (the one snelled on) is bigger and is generally a suicide type hook like a mustad big red (this is the hook that goes through the nose of the live bait) and the back hook is generally a heavy duty live bait hook like a mastad big gun.

for the pike, i have just pinned them though the back just above the lateral line.

cheers, Justin
