What's at Karumba? Grey haired nomads in their caravans!!
Seriously though, I haven't fished there however John Mondora had a great article published in either last years NAFA or one of the Barra & Bass mags. See if I can find it when I get home from work.
Fishing's okay however the gulf does get a good flogging from anglers from the info I've got from friends.

I haven't been across in about five years but the last I heard was the grunter runs are no longer what they used to be.
A lot depends on the type of fishing you are planning?

Are you taking a boat?
Almost compulsory for over there now although you can probably hire a tinny. The fishing around the town is hit hard but if you are willing to travel a bit further afield, up the river, or out along the coast to the Bynoe then you should bring home a feed.
If you are chasing grunter then out at the Fairways of any of the sand banks used to be the go.
A lot depends on the time of year as well.
Good Luck

Overfished close to town, but if you have rig to head off shore you will find some great action.
Fly to Mornington if ya want some real action.

Fished the Russel River for sooties and jungle perch on light spin gear and poppers. Although the fish are smallish, the sightfishing is absolutely fantastic, especially when you have about 10 fish after your lure. More a summer proposition. There's also a river about an hour south of Cairns which was was a great producer of Mangrove Jacks, sooties and J.P. Peter Haynes used to do a lot of charters but he's gone a little quiet of late. He was fantastic to fish with.
Erskine's Tackle Shop will know if he's still chartering.
