I heard from a friend of a wreck near mud island which has been consistently pulling good snapper, was wondering where abouts this is, only wrecks i know off around this general area are the 'Kate' and the 'Mt Elliot'
but no Cpt Wilson ? Am I on the wrong track or is this just a mythical location ? [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]
thanks

Well i wont give exact co-ordinates ;D ;D but it is on the southern end of a bank of what i cant remember the name but it is a sandy ruble and can get pretty shallow. You will often see boats there so just look on a map and go for it ;) ;) :D

Sorry no GPS marks. A mate of mine has been trying to find this wreck for well over 18 months. He has some marks for it, but nothing that makes sence on a map.

Here is some info for you.... it sounds very FISHY!!

"Kaptjain Neilsen" - Moreton Bay - Steam Dredge Wheelhouse -
Max Depth: 13 Mtrs Average Depth: 13 Mtrs
Average Viz: 8 Mtrs Diver Rating: Open Water
Construction: Steel Sank In: 1964
On September 18, 1964 a steam powered suction hopper dredge called "Kaptjain Nielsen", 1599 gross tons, capsized in the middle of Moreton Bay. Of the 24 crew on board, 9 lost their lives. The authorities were quickly into action however and were able to save 11 of the 16 men trapped inside the hull. This was a world record for the no. of lives saved from within a capsized hull. The boat was later raised and repaired and taken back to its home in Holland. Its wheelhouse and some other deck structures remained at the bottom of Moreton Bay .The site is surrounded by sandy ridges and lays in about 12 to 13 meters. Because of its isolation it attracts an awesome amount of Fish. Wobbegong sharks are here in plentiful loads, sometimes displaying aggressive behaviour

have dived the nelson for a few years. at times it has some huge parrot on it. buggered if anyne would get one up though. have seen schools of big snapper on the moreton side of the wreck on the drop off, they appear to be chasing the bait along the drop offs. (hint, hint)
have fun

Hi Craig,
no i haven't fished it, only dived it. there are/were some spectacular fish down there. there are some concrete blocks and steel to the west where the parrot seem to hold. they are like car tyres with tails. have seen people chasing school mac's around it. don't know how they went. have seen plenty of good snapper on the eastern ledge from the wreck. if i was to fish it i thinki would be looking for a bit of bait close by and fishing that.
cheers

Hi just a quick question.
Is the whole wreck down there or was it repaired leaving only the wheelhouse as in the quote that Heath posted? Dazza sounds like he would know after diving on it.

thanks stevo. [smiley=huh2.gif] [smiley=huh2.gif]

Stevo,

The top half of the boat was cut off and they eventually refloated the hull. All that's left is the wheel house and some railing and bits and pieces. I must admit I've never scene the concrete blocks however.

However the big cod inside the wheelhouse is another things to behold altogether :-X :-X

Fairly silted up now, but still fishes well. Bait fish abounds at the right times.

Snapper NOT on top of the wreck. hint, hint. ;)

Bugman,
the blocks are on the western side of the wreck, probably about 300meters from it. They have bits of pipe comming out of them, maybe rigging or something?

The snapper that I have seen are well off of the wreck on sand, along the littel drop offs towards moreton is.

I am getting an underwater housing for my camera soon so hopefully can get a few photos, pity winter is almost gone, the vis can be great there at times.
cheers

The blocks are old beacon post.
You'll most likely find out eventually but have a look around these places
27.11250 153.19.960
27.11.130 153.20.023
27.11.216 153.19.961
best of luck
There nothing left of the grazier but every man and his dog fishes there so
27.20.476 153,16.213
27.20.453 153.16.197. have a go there.

i was regularly catching snapper there to 11kg up too about 3 years ago when the marks were put in a book. yippee lets all go there it has no been overfished. my brother got 3 snapper in 30 mins 2 x 12kg and 1x 13kg but this was 10 years ago, i was standing right next to him and only got 1x 8kg them the breaks.

Wouldn't waste your time this spot gets worse every year.
Like old mate above said was a great spot before it was published in a book!

Biggest snapper pulled off the wreck has been 38 lb on the old scale, can't tell you exactly where it is as the mates would kill me.
