I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the ground is like around this area. Is it good bottom and what is the most common catch. Cheers and Merry Christmas. :D

i was there a few weeks back & the fishing wasn't that great we fished mainly outer rock drifting we caught cod, parrot, sweeties but nothing huge all legal but maybe you'll have better luck. i have had friends fish there fill there esky in 3 drifts.
hope this is some help.
the bottom it quite good with pinnacles & changing in depth.
Macd,
I hav'nt spent a lot of time fishing the botom around outer and middle rock. I always go there to catch narrow barred mackeral, it is one of the best spots in that area. I have caught the occasional small snapper around the 2kg, also plenty of just legal sweetlip drifting away from the southern side of the rock but unfortunately using berly brings around the very big sharks that live there, I have lost a lot of gear because of them.
If you hook up to a mackeral near the rock it pays to keep steaming until you get a bit of distance. It works for me.
Middle rock seems to have the odd cobia.
Best of luck Roz

Had the pleasue of fishing that place a few weeks back and landed a few spanish mackeral myself.
Anything dragged around outer rocks is a likely target for the big toothy things.
Our best rig was a rigged gar in a skirt with a big 8 or 9 barrel sinker 2m up the line. Troll speed was about 10kmh.

Roz,
I think it would be well worth a go. Tony and I did the bommies out from Pancake creek. Some good coral holding some nice fish life but not one single cray. I spent over 40 mins on scuba as well and didn't see anything with feelers. There were a couple of bar cheet trout that have my name on them for next time though.
