Gday all,
Heading to Noosa Thursday - Tuesday and will have the boat in the water for the 5 days, I'm hoping to get offshore for at least one of the days but can also see (by the way the weather is looking, ie Friday: SE winds 20 knots) that we'll also be confined to the river at some stage. I'm after any tips that anyone can offer about the Noosa bar (depth, swell size/direction), reef locations/species/techniques and also river locations/species/techniques.
Thanks all in advance,
Dane

I havn't been over the bar for about a year or so, but I know if you sit some where near the mouth from about 5 am onwards, all the charter boats will show you the way out.
Should be some Jacks about on almost any snag you can find between the two lakes. I use live herring for jack bait. Should be some trevally between Muna point and the mouth early mornings. Go to Davos and have a chat to them when you get there, they have all the latest info. Also some recent reports to be found here.

bar is good at the moment, channel quite deep and running alongside the rock groin. Mackies going nuts still, and there were a few cobia about on the weekend. Otherwise get some GPS points and do some bottom bashing.

Cheers fellas,
That fishingnoosa website has a very encouraging fishing report up there from last week. I'd love to get me a mixed bag of reefies then a few speedsters to top it off :o Cheers wheezer, hopefully the weather allows us across the bar, it sounds doable. Might sit on the rock wall Friday or Saturday morn and get it sussed for Sunday, the weather reports are a bit iffy at this stage, I'd like to believe buoyweather and seabreeze, but BoM are predicting 15/20kn on Saturday now :-/ Some Jacks and whiting in the river are sounding like a good 'plan b' ;)
As far as GPS marks go, I've just got the general marks for each of the reefs, found on various websites. As far as jigging livies, does anyone know of any marks that hold bait??
Cheers,
Dane

hi dane
at the moment if you head out towards jew sholl there is heaps of bait just pick it up on the sounder on the way out.
take plenty of chrome slugs out with you. put a wire leader on as i got smashed to bits on monday. the bay was boiling with fish and the birds were going balistic.

i ended up with 2 nice size yellow fin. 1 spotty.and a mack for bait next time.
lost another 4 at the boat by being to inpatient and having to be the gaff man as well.

a floated pillie will get you spaish or spotties. put good wire on though. i got hammered by monster runs that i couldnt stop and then broke the wire trace. (big spanish i think) im going back to using the nylon coated wire trace in the future.

the bar will be a bit dodgy over the next few days as the norwest-northly blows in

just make shure you are back in well before low tide as i hit bottom on monday on the way in (just as well the swell wasnt to big)

hope this helps

cheers mal

Thanks for the tips Mal, sounds like my type of fishing [smiley=2thumbsup.gif] The tides are low early mornings, rising till about lunch. What time of day have you been getting them? I'm a bit concerned that we wont be able to get out till 6-7am cos of the 5am low tides. As for the Norwest-northerly, we'll probly wait for the weekend when it swings SE. Its well protected from the SE'ly isnt it? How does it handle swell?
Thanks again for the advice, I'll be bringing all the slugs I own as well as a whole bunch of wire ;) ;D Might see you out there? What type of boat do you own?

the birds will let you know whats going on in the bay.
mid morning seems best at the moment.
the water temp in the bay was 28.9 on monday and bait every where

2 hours + either side of low is the safest to get in and out

the bay is protected from the se but can still get a bit bumpy if it blows hard

if the swell is e/ne it can get a bit tricky but just have a good look at the sets first,

i coped a big one over the front last week going out and am now a bit more cautious

"if in dought dont go out" is my new motto.

one thing i noticed when cleaning the fish was they were FULL of 1 inch long bait fish
so a smaller lure could get more hits. but when they are ON in the bay the will eat almost anything.

my boat is a 16foot fiberglass seafarer with a 90 yammy out back.

might have a fish with you if you want while here.

if its crap out side i know a coulpe of spots in the river to get a feed
