Have been getting a load of good reports about big spotties and doggy mackeral being caught frequently around the Bowen area. Rat spanish (85 cm) are also being landed quite frequently. This is a bit weird because they usually dont come on this good for at least 3 or 4 more months. Mny of these fish are being caught only 1 to 2 mile offshore.
Has anyone else in the nq area experienced this event. I know they should be on the chew down south but they do seem irregularly early for up here.

Devo the old man lives about 45 mins south of Cairns and got his first spanish for the year weekend before last. It was around the 10kg mark and also lost another good one at the boat. He fishes a group of islands about 7 nm off the coast. Last year he got his first spanish in January aswell and ended up with 26 for the year in between 6 and 24kg. We have always thought that the early ones (summer ones) have just been resident fish that have stayed behind after the migration for some reason or other, as they are usually always over the 10kg mark, ie never any rats. Cheers, Isaac.
