I have noticed :o someone has had crab pots in the Brissy river near the William Jolly bridge on the Milton bank for the past couple of weeks. Does anyone know of who? And..what has been getting caught.

I seen a few muddies in the shallow rocky pools under the bike path the same area recently. There are some workers putting a new path together in the same spot and I'm thinking one of them has spotted the odd crab or two and tossed in the pots.

Vic,

I too have spotted them from the Train.

They do get a few crabs in this stretch of the river, especially when things have been a bit dry (like now!!)

A mate of mine used to hang a pot off the Helli pad around near parliment house and caught plenty of Muddies. He got a small write up in the paper which has now sent him underground :-X :-X

Cheers
Craig.

yeah Craigy, I have only lived here for 6yrs and the River is now looking its clearest in that time. Has a green colour and not brown.

Would it be safe eating crabs that have been feeding in that area for a long period though?

the pro im talking about has been catching them here for years, he sells to the majority of larger seafood outlets in brisbane, so people have been eating them from out of the river for years. I havent seen to many people walking around with three eyes, least not on the northside!!!!

If it doesn't rain for 6 months it gets pretty clear.
I wouldn't eat a crab from in there, a fish maybe, crabs eat any dead crap they can find, and god knows what is in there. :P
If it is a pro catching them , then it is a bit of a worry.
How many people sitting in the posh restaurants along the river eating mud crabs would be thinking it came from out the front? :-X

I work in George St. and from my 15th level office i have seen him with my binoculors. He puts them out near the Library and across the river and probably further down - out of my sight - as people above have said.

I can't believe he sells them. I thought it was experimental, its not all the "dead crap" down there that would worry me - its the heavy metals in that part of the river as was pumped out of the west end strip opposite corro drive for a century. These would accumulate in your bloodstream until levels become toxic, you know, like lead poisoning etc.

no matter where crabs are they eat dead crap. fish such as bream not only eat dead stuff but plenty of rubbish as well, i caught one once with a 5 cent piece in its guts. if the waters were that toxic crabs and other marines creatures wouldnt be able to survive. people say, " look at the crap colour of the river, its so badly polluted". the river is naturally this colour because of its fast tidal surges and depth as well as the sediments that is stired up because of these two factors.

there is nothing wrong with the crabs in the river, people have been eating them for decades.

good point drew, the other reason for the river being brown is that the urban sprawl with its concrete and stormwater drains stops the rain from being absorbed into the ground as would happen in a natural environment, the excessive run off into the river causes increased turbidity, the dredging also played a big part, just cos the water is brown doesnt mean its polluted, look at the creeks up north where people catch barra...
