Hi all,
I am recently new to fishing and am stil trying to land that nice snapper. I have purchased a range of soft plastics and watched a dvd on how to use them. It shows that after a few jigs once cast you should start a slow retrieve. My question is, for those who are having success with the sp do you leave them on the bottom and allow the current to move them about or are you constantly casting with a slow retrieval? Any advice is appreciated.

depends on what you want to catch with the plastics ;D

Basically a slow lifting action on the rod then a quick line retrieve as the plastic "swims" back to the bottom. I reckon it goes something like 20% of strikes are on the sink straight after a cast.. 70% on the sink after the rod lift and 10% during the lift. Watching the line is important so polarized sunny's come in handy. Different SP's have different actions and a good measure of retrieval speed is to drag it through the water in front of you and see what speed gives the best swimming action. Its taken me 2 odd years of learning the plastic game before starting to consistently catch fish so its all practice as well. Good excuse to go fishing more often.
Help this helps a little and good luck
Cheers, Dezzer

Any of you use a hi-vision line like fluo yellow or green?
No need for the glasses than.
This is from another part of the world where I use such line and watch the lina for catching tilapia, carp and catfish on a running sinker rig.
Easy to see line makes a lot of difference.
(I can not see very well to start with).

gropeher i suggest u just get out to wherever your gonna fish and just get the plastic in the water, thats the most important thing i reckon, dont be in a rush to bring it straight back in, let it drift around in the current a bit, give it a little flick and retrieve it, basically just experiment with it until you find out how the fish like it, you can tell cos you'll either get hits or hook fish, like basserman said it also varies a little depending on what species your chasing, what SP's did you get?

If you are after squire/snapper, I use 8lb fireline, 10lb leader, 4" SP's in green color mainly. Cast out, then lift and pause...you will know when you have an interested reddy around, your rod will buckle and line will scream out!! Gotta love it!!
