Saw a show yesterday where some local islander fishermen were after Tuna. They got live baitfish in a net then they searched for a tuna boil looking out for birds. When they located the Tuna they started throwing the baitfish at them really getting the tuna on the bite they went nuts. They then lined up 4 guys either side of the boat with long rods throwing in what I can only assume to be unbaited barbless hooks and they got the movement happening where they would get a hookup yank the fish towards the boat in one movement so that the fish would leave the hook midair and land in the back of the boat while they would continue the movement of the rod so that the hook went back in the boil. All the guys would move their rods as each other latched on to avoid a tangle. Skillful stuff and they landed 91tuna in four and a half minutes.
Mindblowing.
Isn't that how old Dean Lukin the weightlifter made his living. Also remember seeing some footage a few years ago that showed the same thing. Amazing stuff.
No wonder the bugger was so strong!!!

Burley_Boy, Poling for Tuna that is and the poles do have a jig/lure attatched to the end..Some years back living down the South coast used to watch the Tuna Boats come in to Jb(Jarvis Bay) and alongside the normal Pilchrd Boats they used to ring net Pillies, sardines, Slimies n yakkas ..Keep em alive as best they could..Go out next day find thier school/schools of Tuna , start like you mentioned gettting the School in a feeding frenzy and away they's go..
Plenty a Tunaman made his fortune that way them days ey..

Yeah fellas - practise known as polling.
Before the ring netters started this is how all tuna were caught. Anyone ever remember seeing the movie "Bluefin"

The boats were also fitted with water sprays to simulate bait fish and having tried it its hard work

I read somewhere that the hooks they use are barbless, so that its easier to remove the hooks from the tuna...

they used to catch so many southern blues polling that they would have the boats nearly sinking. there was a bit of wasted resourse as they didnt have enough ice of refrigeration, the tuna on the bottom of the heap were turned into a bloody slurry, the ones at the top dried, and the few under the top layer were ok.
not to mension that the tuna were not spiked gilled and gutted...
