I've been trying the Palomar and the San Diego for attaching hooks to mono over 100lb bs based on a long google for the recommendation of the best knot for this purpose.
Unfortunately, I just can't seem to get these knots to fit snugly and their appearance doesn't instil confidence. The only knot that looks halfway decent is the Non Slip Mono Loop Knot but I don't know it's strength ratio. Perhaps the line is just crap and isn't supple enough?
Anyone recommend another knot or advise as to what's going wrong?

kev, a harrisons loop is tops and snell or blood, a crimping tool can make a very neat and fast job to.

Appropriate sized crimps will provide a fast, neat and strong solution if used correctly. Cheers.

So I use the same crimps that I use for my wire? I've always thought (despite seeing it recommended in some fishing mags)that anything that nips into mono is going to reduce it's strength considerably?

No mate. Alu ones for mono, steel for wire. Visit www.pakula.com.au.

Bloody hell! I'm using alu on my wire and have never had one give yet. Must've been lucky. Mind you, I do use two at each end.

I use 125lb mono a lot and use the Simple Snell for my multiple hook rigs and the locked half blood knot for everything else. No problems, just make sure you dont cut the loose end off too short, or it can slip out if it hasnt yet had a good stretch.

Just googled the harrison's. Looks just the same as the san Diego. I can't seem to get it to tighten so it must be crap (too stiff) mono. Ah well, this tight arse better go buy some better stuff :-)

the uni knot is the only knot for heavy stuff! I can tie them in any line class without too much trouble. About 4 turns will be ok for 100lb.

kev,
i like the thumb knot for lines over 60lb. Its easy to tie blindfolded at night hanging upside down in the galley of a ship battling broaching seas in a gale (get the point ;)),
It is a sliding knot so the hook has some freedom & the tag faces towards the rod tip which is an advantage using slab & strip baits as it acts as a barb so you don't need keeper hooks or to pass the line in circles thru the bait
as for a crimp reducing breaking strain, your weakest point wil be the knot in your lightest line - your mainline usually.
hi kingtin. i use uniknots for all fishing activities, 5 loops for light line, 3 for heavy, make sure you pull it up tight. if unsure invest in the jinkai system, can be used with ande, or any other mono of your choosing. best of luck, kevy. ;) ;)
