Just caught myslef a nice skate the other day off the rocks. good fighting! battled it for 15 minutes on my beach rod with 35lb line and a broken drag. the fish had me in control the whole time. Broke my gaff and made me battle it knee deep in water as it was high tide! weighed in at 27.5kg and 157cm. anyone caught one bigger off the rocks?

Too bloody true Rob! I used to get my rocks off on this kind of fishing: ;)

I still believe that there's plenty of rays that size to be caught in the Bay.........I've seen 'em, hooked 'em, and I've come close to boating 'em on a few occasions. Irrespective of the size limits that Grant's places on rays and shovellies, much larger ones exist in the bay.
Anyway Rhinoauk, well done mate and if that's a true skate it will make lovely chewin'.
cheers

Sorry about that. Obviously the last post was mine. The little feller left himself logged on again.

You should have sent it to reports??? what does this mean kingcobe???
so has anyone actually landed one of these things of a decent size? i guess theres no point really - waste of time and energy!

Pardon my boy :) He's only been here 5 minutes and already he's trying to run the place ;D What he means is that your post was probably more appropriate in the fishing reports section as you were reporting on what you'd caught.
Waste of time and energy? Depends what you want out of your fishing. I can almost guarantee that on any given day, I can go to a certain spot in the Bay and catch a *big* shovelly or ray and my energy wouldn't be wasted. It'd be a sense of achievement in boating a 20 or 30 kilo ray or shovelly on 25lb line. My wits against his. He goes to the bottom and digs in knowing full well that he can use the sea bed to his advantage.......do I try to force him and risk a break off? No! I first try the old twanging line trick.......they hate the vibration of the line when you twang it like a guitar string......if the line vibrates near his snout then he'll up and move and that's when you try to get him up and away from the bottom. failing that, you just wait till *he* decides to move and then the fight's back on again. waste of time and energy? Depends on your viewpoint.
Not as glamorous as catching something considered prettier and more edible but still what fishing's all about and I still maintain that once a big ray reaches around the 40 kilo mark it will take a good man to shift him once he hits bottom.
I have to say that though don't I? To justify all the crap I catch ;) ;D
