Are cast nets legall to use in N.S.W to gather live bait?

Nope,

Although I have mine here (NSW) I can't be caught with it anywhere near the water.

Thanks guys for the info I will be heading down to the Tweed in a few weeks, looks like I will have to leave the cast net at home.Catching live bait on jigs may be the way to go and the old bait pump.

Gav, fish kept live to use as livebait will still draw the ire of the inspectors if undersize for the species

yes thats why you only use fish that dont have a minimum size are effective as live bait like herring, or poddy mullet and butterbream ;D

Oh damn! I was heading down to Ballina next week and I was planning on bringing a cast net! >:( >:( >:(

That's what is great about this Ausfish site, ask a question and you get the right answers. Years ago I was trying to get a few poddy mullet with the cast net in the Brunswick river. I was fortunate enough that the guy who pulled me up was the president of one of the sportfishing clubs down that way - Not fisheries. Could have been a disasterous holiday.
