"All ships operating beyond smooth and partially smooth waters must carry an EPIRB if more than two nautical miles from land"

Before I had an epirb I used to stay on the close reefs off Southport. I used google earth to enter the gps points, and then I used UBD maps to scale 2 nm from landmarks. I overlayed this on google earth and found which reefs were with 2nm.
I had a mates handheld gps, so when I was on the reef, I didnt stray outside the 2nm zone. Dont forget to convert miles to naut miles. you need to be exact, because they will ping you out there if you stray.
make sure you have the other required safety equipment, like flares, Vsheets. water, signal device, cause youll get fined for not having them too.
cheers

What could be the price of not having safety equipment?
Is it that expensive to you
Can you not get into a life threatening situation inside 2 nm?
Safety should be the first concern as the captain in charge of a vessel

"The Act provides penalties for breach of safety obligations of up to $A37,000 or one year imprisonment. Should the breach cause death or grievous bodily harm to a person, the penalty is up to $A375,000 or imprisonment for two years."
Found that interesting.....a little sad too that a humans life is only worth $A375,000.
Yeap, safety should be the first and foremost concern....and not only on the water.

I can't swim 2nm but I could stay afloat long enough for the Coast Guard or one of the many VMR boats that would be heading to my position with my EPIRB giving off my position
to the rescue authorities.
The new digital EPERB is a very cheap insurance whatever the situation
How much do you put on your life :-?

You won't get done for not having an epirb anywhere
inside Moreton Bay.
Check the boating handbook from the dept of transport
for the limit lines.
2 nm outside past south passage bar,
and 2 nm past a line drawn from Skirmish point on Bribie
to the tip of Cape Moreton, and within 2nm of the coastline
of Bribie, Moreton and Straddie, etc
Flares are a different concern, tho...
