I have a 10 foot cast net, a 6 foot cast net and a drag net (seine net).

Where would i start ? what sort of spots do i look for ?

I will be prawning in the Noosa River.

gday mjc85 i think the best way for you to go is to use your 10ft cast net.its also a good idea to have a top pocket put in your net as the prawns will always swim to the top of the net, this will make getting the prawns out much easier and you won't lose them once there in.i find prawing in deeper water to be better so try looking for deep holes up the creeks.when there thick you will often see them skiping across the water away from the boat as your motoring along.

I would recommend 3/4" inch cast net draw string net. they are easy to get prawns out of. Use at low tide on mud banks and around creek and gutter mouths .

Also when do the prawns run in south east Queensland ? So you recommend the best way is to drive up creeks in my boat and find holes and cast the net in there ? Also what depth would you consider a hole ? Eg 2-3 metres if the rest of the creek is 1 metre ? and do they prefer murky water ?

we're going to be in merimbula next week. can anyone tell me if it's the right time for us to catch prawns there and where is the best spot? what sort of net whould we get any other hints or help would be great. I'm much better at catching cod in the murray (though I'm not always good at that either :()

Gday Azza,

Merimbula is nice but go north young man, up around Narooma, Bermi, or Tuross. There is untold amounts of lakes up there that fire up at different times depending on the season and rain.
An old favourite stomping groung for me is Corunna and Wallaga
