Best times daybreak and sunset, best bait livies, best tides a very debatable subject, area anywhere there is structure in the water

Try a runout tide on the dark of the moon. High tide just on or after dark and fish for about half the tide. Live bait, flesh or big prawns. Try aroud bridges rock walls and marinas.

mate on the sunny coast we get best results on an outgoing tide in the very quiet hours of 11PM TO 3AM. yet on the goldie it seems better dawn or dusk!USE LIVIES. but yeah, i guess each spot's different and each person's results are different. good luck mate and keep persevering - they are worth all the effort in the world!

try unweighted mullet or pike strips unweighted just as the sun is coming up and the the tide is almost full but not slack yet with mustad big gun hooks in 2/0 and 40 pound penn 10x leader drifted along a rock wall or over a shallow rock bar

I've got a few on dusk & just after.
I do pose one question though, are you wasting your time fishing for them once the sun is up?
If I get to say, 7-30am, should I put the Jack gear away & chase a bream or something? I have never got one more than an hour or so after daybreak.

I disagree with the live bait theory as I have caught way more jacks on dead mullet bait then livies. Need very hot humid weather, tide nothing bigger then 1.5 metres run as bigger tides will allow the jacks to get up into the mangroves to feed on small crabs and stuff and they will not touch the bait.

Dead mullet strips is the best bait you will get

gday devo,

i never thought about the bigger tides - really good point! with the livies though, i have a certain spot that never produces on strip baits, cos the place is also riddled with crabs!!! so i guess it all depends on the location. but yeah, ive also found places up north further where strip baits outdo livies hands down. so i guess you just gotta suss out every location. anyway, good tip about the bigger tides, makes heapsa sense!

get yourself a good barra lure(must have three trebbles) and chuck it up and down the break walls at the river mouth. retrieving the lure as close to the wall as you dare. fish the making tide and hold on.

sorry i think this is my brothers account, but i caught a 35cm jack in tallebudgera creek on 4lb line (no trace) and a piece of beach worm (frozen) for bait.

he is now the best looking fish in my tank lol.

Surely he'd be the only fish in your tank? :o

yes very true a 35cm jack would smash any thing in a tank well it should and being wild caught that would make it more aggressive even though they are probly the most aggressive fish you can get for a tank

g'day
like the others said, out going tide, livies or dead bait(i prefer live) bridges, deep holes, rock bars and snaggy banks. choose your trace depending on the area you are fishing.
good luck

Hey Guys
Ill introduce myself first
Im Brad from Nerang was my little brother earlier
The Jack looks great on the tank is about 40cm these days
In that tank i have
1 Mangrove Jack
1 Sleepy Cod around 30cm
2 Salmontail Cats around 30cm
2 Red Scats about 25cm
3 Peacock Bass (south american) between 30 and 40cm
1 Saratoga Leichardi about 30cm

Actually its between the Saratoga and Sleepy Cod for who is the boss
The Peacock Bass are amazing do a search on Cichla Monoculas its a fish from the Amazon that fisherman have released at Florida so they can catch them there
Ill try and get some pics up
Oh yeah by the way its a 10.5ft tank
