Hi guys just wondering which crab pots you guys thinks is best I currently have some of those from kmart which are $14.95 rectangle and the entrace is just the net going inward on a support caught a couple in these but think they can easily get back out as you can push your hand back out quite easily, have one with a split sleve system which seems to catch nothing except eels and small crabs maybe to tight. Had a look on crab ngear web site which one do you guys thik is the go

A few years back I was lucky enough to score accomodation right on the river. Money was a bit tight back then so I made a crab pot out of some old chook wire. It worked fine. Later I upgraded to one of those round collapsible pots with the soft mesh. I fished those two pots side by side for nearly a year and the wire one consistently outfished the bought one 2 to 1.

I fished them as set pots and checked them at least once a day depending on tides and work.
And I did suspect that maybe some crabs were getting out because sometimes the bait would be mauled and no crab inside. So what I did with the wire one was to swing a few pieces of fencing wire from the top of each entrance. These acted like a one way flap valve. The crab could push past them on the way in, but they locked against the wire on the way out. It did improve the catch rate (maybe by 25%?), but the amazing thing was the old wire pot fished so well compared to the shop bought one.

Eventually lost the old wire one when a croc stole it.

CrabnGear now have their new pots out. They are oval shape and collapse in seconds. I have 4 of this type and 4 of the large round type. Although the big round ones are collapsible, I always leave them assembled cause its too much effort pulling them down.
Also think about the colour of the pots. The bright orange pots don't work to great in the muddy creeks.
Make a trip into CrabnGear and speak to Mike, he'll teach you everything you need to know.

I have a couple of crab'n gear ones and four Jarvis walker heavy duty. They seem to work the same to me and are less than 1/2 the price. Home made wire ones consistently outfish both types.

I thought this is illegal as it acts as a fish trap??? I could be wrong though...

I hadnt heard of that. I did catch a few cod, the odd stonefish and the occasional bream though.
