Are there any spanner crabs in the northern end of Moreton Bay that are in catchable numbers?? I have heard that their might be, but in the deeper areas and that it is necessary to use a special type of dilly with loops of fishing line sticking up from a flat net.

Anyone have any experience with spanner crabs in this area????

It's been a while, but I have caught spanner crabs in the deeper water between Cowan and Comboyuro Point during the change of tide. We specifically targeted them using standard dillies on extra long ropes. You've only got about an hour while the tide changes before the tidal run gets too strong. Looking back, I'm not really sure it was worth the effort.

They are there and im probably annoying some people by telling you that they are so i wont go into detail too much. You'll need long ropes and for a dilly there are a specially designed type that is merely a heavier guage wire bent into a square with mesh like that used for blue swimmers fairly tightly strung around the wire. Pilchards will be fine for bait.

I have seen several live spanner crabs large enough to take over at Amity some years ago. They were south of the camping grounds. This area though, has been scoured out by the strong tides.

Not sure about the bay but their are plenty of spanner crabs riding jet skis around the broadwater.

They are found in water over 30m and they are Bloody Great to eat.
As budge said use the square mesh type as the round Dillies will bust your back trying to pull them up if you get on to them, leave them down for 30 Min then pull them if no good move them around till you find them.
