I personally dont belive a fresh water barra is anywhere near as satifying as catching a Salty! Whats everyones thoughts on my opinions. The Chase for the elusive Barra in dams doesnt satisfy my thirst anywhere near as much as chasn em in the salt!

Its a different feeling getting one in the fresh because you're usually fishing in such different environments. That said I'd rate an 80cm saltie higher than an 80cm freshie. Might have to continue this debate out on the Barron Shane :)

Hard to keep emotion out of this one. Lots of guys say salt over fresh who have never fished the dams. This debate should probably be limited to guys who have been successful at both. There is a perception that because we see photos of meter plus barra coming out of the dams, they are easier to find, fight and land. Admittedly, probably easier for a newcomer to the sport to catch a bigger fish in the dam. Does this make them a lessor fish......This argument will continue forever.
For the record, I am still trying to catch an impoundment barra. Have been burnt a few times. Is there a better fish........... :)

have caught them over a metre in the dams (tinaroo) and to 90cms in the salt - both are great to catch and never let anyone tell you the big dam barra don't jump - I have seen monsters 50-60lb plus clear the water with ease.
the two fish (fresh and salt) are different colour - with the salties being magnificent yellow finned chrome beasts (especially if you've ever trolled them up at a rivers mouth) and the freshies having lots of purple reflections and bronze margins. both are awesome to look at.
there's usually no sand flies when chasing the freshies #;D
having said that, i still rate the salties higher - they are typically much fitter fish and will go harder for longer, and on capture are easier to revive and release.
a big salty is usually a much greater surprise than a big freshie - i.e in the dams - you know there are lots of big barra, and if you know what you are doing you generally expect to get amongst them - still great to catch though - but when a big salty climbs on, its usually out of the blue and its bl**dy awesome.
they both give the same feeling when they crunch that lure though ;)

Enjoy both salt and fresh, a 50 lb freshie hits as hard as a 50lb saltie but its fight is half the time use all there energy in the first run where a saltie has a bit more stamina

Prefer the freshwater because I dont have to wash the boat or my gear when I get home from the dam

Go the salties, well the brackish really.
Love going up north, heading up to Weipa again at Easter.
Anyone who knows Dave Donald may be interested to know this will be his last season out of Weipa.
Have been lucky enough to have fished the Cape on a number of occasions.
To be fair have only fished Awoonga once, a couple of weeks back, nothing on the cast only the troll, and it's not how I like to fish for Barra.
Good thing about up north, you can never be sure what you will catch, could be Barra, could be a king salmon, could be something else, who knows?
