I'm forever trying to work out fish names, either of new species caught, or of Aus names for fish. In my quest to find a solution to my challenge I cam across an excellent global fish reference database site run by the United Nations.

Try this link

http://www.oceansatlas.org/unatlas_gifs/offsiteframe.jsp?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fao.org%2Ffi gis%2Fservlet%2FFiRefServlet%3Fds%3Dspecies%26fid% 3D2902&ctn=3441&kot=web-sites.

Also very useful for pics to explain to me what fish you are talking about should I ever again have the need to ask ?

;) ;) :)

actually, its not run by the United Nations, it is run by Fisheries Global Information Systems.

the link above is wrapped, this here is the real site link...
http://www.fao.org/figis/servlet/static?dom=root&xml=species/index.xml

see "Aquatic Species".......
http://www.fao.org/figis/servlet/static?dom=root&xml=species/species_search.xml

Is that good or bad ? What is the relevance of it being wrapped ?

neither i guess, the info just clarifies the source, i dont want the UN being held responsible for a wrong identification ;)

wrapping links is used to disguise the source, or in this case, for the UN to have its own banner plastered over the top of the page, it is easy enough to do with an unprotected html page source code. but, as this is a chat about fish, not web design secrets, i think i will leave it there :)

hey, heres a link to identify the class of fish (it uses pictures to help the kiddies :) ).....

http://filaman.ifm-geomar.de/identification/classlist.cfm

and heres another one (i think its better) from australian museums online...

I agree about the UN - I'd had to have a post on Ausfish mistaken and end up causing WW3.

Liked the other sites too - kiddies stuff for me preferably.

geez I tell ya what this site is the easiest I have used to find a fish. http://www.amonline.net.au/fishes/identify/index.cfm

I hope that doesn't mean that I'm a kid again, lmao
