Welcome to Ausfish Mate.
Fishing by definition is an extremely wide topic. What sort of fishing are you looking at doing - freshwater or saltwater, river, river mouth, surf, harbour, out at sea on a yak, a boat, what type of boat etc.
Same as searching on the net, you may need to narrow your question to one specific type of fishing, and then ask for information relative to a discipline within that fishing, such as the following :
Subject of Post : Catching Remora
Then your question
"I'm trying to catch Remora (Sucker fish), as they hang around the boat, but don't know what they eat. What can I use as bait ?"
That question could get you a far more firm answer, try it and see if you don't get better replies that way.
Anyway - good luck with Ausfish I'm sure you'll get it. ;D ;)
Cheers Catchy Fishy
Also look up other posts on your topic as there is a lot of good info on here

what catchy-fishy was trying to say is that this is a chat forum, where you can ask about one particular thing and get an answer. It is NOT a general fishing class, although there is not much you can't learn here over time.
Best start is to buy a book "Fishing for Dummies" by Steve Starling. While I haven't read it, I have read a lot of material by the author and he really knows his stuff. It will give you the full range of basics about gear and techniques for each type of common fish.
From there , you can start asking questions

The problem you have here mate is this site is run by 98% of south east Queenslanders with a couple of southerners and overseas guys etc.
So you need to get specific (with a bit of your own homework) about what you want to chase, and then guess what,
You little beauty,
Ausfish is your little oyster, we will then all help where to start and how to catch it, and before you know it, just like me 12 months ago, you start catching fish regulary and bagging out.
Thats exactly how I managed to catch fish.
So stick here, and before you know it, your on big time, and the line is dissapearing from your reel.
It wont happen overnight, but it does happen.
Great bunch of blokes and teachers here, I am so thankful to all of em!!
Cheers Ryan..
Start by fishing with light line and leaders, small hooks, small baits, etc. Stick to estuary, beach and clear areas until you know what your bait is doing at all times. Its no good fishing off rock walls, or the surf until you know more about tides and will only lose gear (or get swept off)if you cant feel the bait. By fishing light, you will entice more bites and hookups, mightnt land everything, but something will be happening regularly. ;)
Too many people fish too heavy, not understanding there is probably only bread and butter species at that location. Go for walks and see what others are doing in the areas you would like to fish.Check out what rod and reel , what bait/lure, the better ones wont say to much, you will just have to watch ;D
The best time to fish is at daybreak for most species, you will find walking the edge at sunrise, you can see the fish feeding right at your feet. Thats a tip, keep your bait close to the edge, at daybreak.Cast further out as the sun gets higher. Watch for drop offs and structure under water, cast to it, and keep in contact with the bait at all times.
