Sorry, I didn't explain real good :-/.
I'm trying to find out if what they call a dogfish that's caught in the Richmond river is the fish as the fish know as a catfish that's caught in the Logan river. And can you eat them??
ie same fish different names.
Bit like a fresh water eel tailed catfish in NSW is called a jewy in QLD... yum.
Does that make sense?? :-?

Hi Finga, I'm a Ballina local, the Grant's Guide declares our spiney friends as Blue Catfish, I have several names for them, none of them acceptable here, as for eating them...............NO THANKS, Muzz.

Yeah, I want to know too, that's all we seem to catch lately!
So it seems that there's no difference but can we eat them??
Gotta do some research and will report back!

In Lake Argyle, WA (Ord dam) there is a commercial industry, catching the salmon-tail catfish and marketing them under the name "silver cobbler" to Perth and overseas.

a mate of mine actually requested a Cattie from me whe i went fishing last
i was glad to supply one as we dont eat them
he loved it
i guess we as anglers forget how lucky we are sometimes with the "good" things
we would all eat it if we had nothing better

Well guys, I've finally tried it!! :D
It's beautiful!!
The flesh is firm and redish. You must skin the fish though and make some fillets.
To cook it:
Roll the fillets in flour.
In a frying pan, melt some butter (not margarine or oil), REAL butter.
When the butter is dark (not just melted, it needs to be dark), chuck the fillets. Depending on their thickness, it might take a minute or 2 on each side.
Serve with slices of lemon.
It's a cross between salmon and coral trout, and it taste real nice.
Preferably, use reasonable size dogfish. And now that I know I can eat them, please release the small ones alive! :)
I guess you just need to get over their appearance, and frankly, they are not as ugly as the flatheads!!
