Hi all,
I have caught plenty of Trevally as bycatch but know I am keen on targeting both species specifically. Where around our northern estuaries and canals say from the Pine to Caloundra can you catch them. What sort of area do you look for when deciding where to fish and what lures work best. I'm not asking anyone for their secret spots just a few pointers so I can go find my own.
Thanks in advance,
Scotty

Hey Mate
i get trevally and queenies on the goldie in most of the canals and lakes and around the bridges, they mostley go for the naturtal coloures and a realy fast jig.

I regularly catch very small queenfish in my castnet when looking for bait in the Pumistone Passage (all non legal bait goes straight back by the way) so there must be some around that way - never caught any though. Might be worth giving the area between the boardwalk and the mouth of the passage at the Caloundra end a go.

You will be lucky to catch a queenie or skinny fish around the southern coast... I have also specifically targeted trevally on the gold coast, and regularly catch them one after the other...
take a look... the location speaks for itself!

Hey Scotty,
I am located in Brisbane... If you are heading up there this weekend... do the extra kms' to noosa... The trevally thrive up there... Brassy trevs, GTs, Big eyes, Tea leaf and the occasional goldie and diamond. I have also caught small queenies on poppers up there... And the tailor are XOS! But make sure you get there early... School holidays... you know what its like...
Here is a few pics of my recent trip up to noosa...
i love it up there!

I find for trevally and queenies that plain metal slices (like raiders, etc) cranked in as fast as you can will generally get them. I usually use the 20g or 15g or even down to the 10g if the fish are being picky.
If they come up behind it and have a look but shy away it generally means that your not bringing it in fast enough or you might want to downsize the lure a little (or sometimes upsize).
If you see surface hits just cast out and crank it in. For spots, just try and find somewhere where herring or baitfish sit because they often will be hanging out the back or smashing through them.
Saying that though i had some fun with big queenies (~1m+) on soft plastics the other day. I was using one of the tsunami swim shads in the dark greeny colour. Have also caught quite a few 70-80cm GT's on these lures as well.

Up in Townsville I have been using Halco Laserpros the gold and blue 2.5m drivers and the queenies are smashing those.
Cant wait to get my boat, have to rely on mates when they go and also hope I get an invite.

Hey Scotty and Nuggstar
If you guys ever have a free spot in a tinnie, let me know! Ill trade you for some off shore fishing in my new rig! I love trevs! Over the past 2 years I have specifically targeted trevs with great success. The majority of my fish came from Noosa Goldie and the occassional golden trev from the maroochy river. You will notice that the trevs around the southern state and sunshine coast arent as big and prolific as the ones up north! None the less, they are serious sport fish! I target them on 4lb braid in the noosa system and have to beef up to 10lb-16lb in the gold coast seaway... the ones in the seaway are absolute dogs sometimes! Noosa produces great catches of trevs all year, but I have found that Jan to april the best time. November was my slowest month! On a serious note, if anyone is heading up there (noosa) give me a buzz, I am happy to chip in for any cost... I can't get enough of it! Ill add some more of pics asap... Let me know if you guys are keen on more info...

Hey again scotty!
Like I said... I am more than happy to share expenses... especially to the Noosa system... I would even pay for a full tank... You have to understand that the trev fishing up there and the Gold Coast is phenominal... most people dont understand until they fish with me... Nice little trev too mate... Ill get some more noosa trev pics for you if you want!... I live in Forest Lake... West brissie... How bout u? You seem to be a keen fisho! Let us know when you wanna chase trevs!!! Or need more info!

Great footage from nugget there bilgeboy...
I remember in summer... the sounder use to pick up plagues of trevs in the seaway...
there is something wrong if you cant get into a few! the little sister even gets into them with ease!
Majority are big eyes though... i havent caught a gt there for a while now!
Good old trevs! the sisters gt!
Here is a pic of the biggest Queenie I have seen caught on the Gold Coast, my mate Davud got it as by-catch during a bream social on a Gulp Minnow Grub. It was caught in the Coomera River

nice fish daz they woulda bin a heap of fun to catch. When you go do you get them one after the other or is it hard work? One afternoon we got a few in noosa and I've caught/seen them in the maroochy too, only actually caught the silvers though.
In january we are at noosa for 2 weeks with the boat in the water. I am keen to target them for the majority of that time. What area and time of day do you find best? I know of munna bridge at dawn, have you fished there before?

Hey Silient,
Noosa it is... I have caught some of my biggest greenbacks in the river... best went 86cm over a tad over 4kg...
Dan: I was with a mate back in february for 2 weeks... they are either on or off... sometimes making it tough fishing for them... I always go to noosa to target trevs, and giant herring! I will be planing a trip up to noosa in a few weeks... my boat is too big for that type of fishing though... so i will have to work something out! Maybe hire a tinnie! Munna bridge is good early in the morning... I tend to stick to soft plastics or poppers under that bridge...
Here is a pic of a giant herring the missus caught... she doesnt like touching fish!
Cheers

Catching 86cm greenback tailor @ Noosa is magnificent...
What sort lure you used?

Hey silent,
The lure I live by is the halco twisty... they have never let me down...
Any tailor over 3kg is magnificent these days... I just wish I could hit the noosa river again... I have almost convinced the missus to get a car topper with a 10hp outboard... so I will be planning to do some smooth water fishing again...
I remember is 2004... I landed 5 tailor over the 3.5kg mark on 4lb line... most of these fish hit poppers, and usually are tough to hook up successfully, they tend to hold the lure in their mouth for a while... then when they feel the tension... they jump... and spit the lure... Amazing stuff...
But back to Noosa Trevs... tailor are the by catch!
