hi just a quick question
thinking of heading out of wello boat ramp to give wello a shot, however, from never being in that area, does the boat ramp have a fairly deep water entrance? is the channel well marked, and is it a tidal ramp??
the reason i ask, the last trip into the bay found me putting in at my old fav ramp (wynnum - not many ppl use it) and i had to row the boat out about 40meters before i could even put the engine in ::) i always knew it was a shallow ramp, but this one morning i forgot to check the tides ::) ::)... oops!!

Yes it is very tidal, open to the bay.
At low tide it can be very shallow. The leads out are fairly well marked, just make sure you stay inside them. There are very big sand banks on northern side of the leads, very visible at low water. At low tide I like to make sure I am on the plane going up the leads, keep the prop up away from the bottom. Once at the outer beacon, there is plenty of water.
The outer red and green are the only lit beacons, the inner ones are unlit. And i must say, the outer lit beacons are not the brightest, though quite visible, IMHO they could be alot bigger and brighter.
As for the ramp, at low tide you may need to put the trailer further in than you like, cause there aint much water when low.
All in all, the ramp is quite usable at low water, just need some care taken, may pay to walk down the ramp till you find the end of the concrete for peace of mind.
Cheers and enjoy

I agree with mike, the main hint at low is to make sure you walk down and find the end of the ramp, other than that i've found it to be fine. even at low tide there is usually around 1m of water out to the leads. depending on what size boat you have i suppose makes a difference but for us it's fine.
have fun!

At low tide i find it better to use the side futherest from the jetty as the other side drops off. If you go by yourself remember at high tide there is no where to put your boat when getting car apart from on the ramp.

Hi Jason,
Adamy and I set off before sun up at Wello, and I had to apologise for getting things a little wrong. The 1st of the leads closest to the jetty is not lit, so we overshot it and wound up in very shallow water. Just as well Adam had power trim and tilt so we didn't get our feet wet after all.
Also, I noticed that there is a sand bank in the most awkward position.... Just make sure that as you come to the end of the jetty, hook around to the left to line up with the leads immediately in front of the jetty. At low tide if you are too slow coming around to the left, you will find the sand bank I am talking about.

Thanx for the info guys, you say that there are sand banks either side, i would've thought it would be rock.
Scalem, from the sounds of your trip, i think i may wait till daylight before i try a maiden voyage out of wello.
the end of the boat ramp isn't usually a concern for me (unless it drops off 5 meter's) my 4WD can usually handle a little bit of slippery ledges

Hi Josh,... yeh there are sand banks either side of the leads - but rock at the ramp... and also rock at the shallows - which is why we go ;D And like Matti says - there is no place to leave your boat at high tide when retrieving - so make sure you take a deckie - you need them to hold the boat - and during a Sou Easterly the ramp is exposed which means retrieval by yourself is a bit difficult - especially if you have a glass boat... just some things to be wary of..
Other than that Wello is a great place to fish - after you go a few times you'll probably wonder why you went anywhere else ;) But it does pay to have a guide the first time... better take me :P
Good luck mate... dont forget to put up a post... by the way from our experience wello shallows fish best on the run in tide... so often you launch at low

HAHAHA... ;D ;D ;D
The more i fish by myself, the more and more i find myself enjoying it away as my time out away from everything and everyone.
I think charleville can describe the enjoyment of fishing solo in the bay better then i do.
Although i do notice that you generally are able to bring home a couple of fish from there, so a little local knowledge may come in useful. I will keep this in mind
It's beginning to sound like wello isn't a comfy place at high or at low... :-/ Talk about a fussy boat ramp

Josh.. its just the launching and retrieval which is difficult... the rest is easy ;D ;D
If you have a tinnie of some description, you shouldn't have a problem. Lots of luck!!

hmm funny thing that isn't it... ::)
After going fishing with outsiderskip, my motivation for bay fishing has slightly diminished... they always say to get good fish you have to head offshore, and i'm beginning to believe it so. can't wait for another opportunity.
Well i only have a tinny, so it sounds like it should be fine.
Thanx for the help guys, muchly appreciated!!
