G Day,
I was just wondering if anyone had any advice in regard to the dolphin fish?
Where to go to target them, what baits to use, what techniques to explore etc.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Cheers

They usually hang around FAD's and anything floating, and usually in numbers. I use livies, but I guess SP's or slugs would do the job as well. They fight well and cleanly, but u need to bleed and ice them straight up, and they like to bleed alot.
Good fun, and good on the plate.

Females and smaller school fish hang around the fads and any flotsam, the larger bulls tend to swim in the open wider out and can be taken on marlin lures. We tend to catch a few when trolling a marlin spread around the edge of the shelf.

Thanks for the info,
I have also heard that they can be caught around the 50fathom line off the gold coast.
Is this correct?
And where are FAD's located?

Where we are , water temp makes all the difference, below 24c they dont seem to feed much, but once it's above that it's much easier.
Livies are good when the water is a bit cold.
I agree with stubbie holder, smaller fish around the FADs can be targeted with plastics, but the bigger fish are more loners, just keep a liviey swimming out the back & they will find it, dont be scared to put on a big bait.

Plenty of FAD's on the 50fathom line and yes you should be able to get them off the GC.
Whats been on lately out there I would not know as I've only really been chasing Snapper on the 36's
I used to fish for them here off Ballina with 2-3kg line on my bream spinning gear, now I know It would have been difficult if I had of hooked a horse but I didn't and I never got spooled.
The FADS are only on the 32 fathom line here. If ever you are going to be this way I'll dig out my GPS coordinates for you.
I used to use mainly Kokoda Roger poppers with a fast retrieve (these are sinking poppers). I used a 40lb trace for ease of landing.
These fish are one of my favorites, They hit poppers, jump when hooked, run fast and are great to eat...my favorite fish to eat!
If you PM me your address I will send you a couple of the old Kokoda rogers I have in my garage collecting dust, you have helped me out b4 and what goes around comes around.
Send me a PM if you want any more info.
Sean :)
