G'day Guys,

I have a trip from Brisbane to Tin Can Bay at the end or October.

There will be about 6 boats doing the trip that range from 30ft - 50ft
I will be on a 35ft Caribbean.

On the way up we want to troll some lures ... the cruise speed on the way up will be around 15 knots .... and I am unsure of how far off the coast we will be travelling.

I need to know:
what type of lures will best handle this speed?

what lure size would be recommended?

what target species is likely at that time of year, especially at that speed?

I have a lot of experence in lure trolling, but I have never attempted to troll lures at that speed.

Cheers

Pete

I would give a Hex Head lures a go, Im not too sure of the area but you would probley pick up a tuna or maybe mackeral.

g day pete, i have trolled metal headed skirts over the last few years (both hex head and round head shapes ) . When trolling at the speeds you are talking i have picked up macks and hoo but that is down the goldy.
I have been using 8kg outfits this year with no trouble but havent really been at the speeds your travelling very often (mainly because i havent had any more success at high speeds comparitavely speeking although others will probably say otherwise ).
If your towing bigger metals it might pay to go up to 15kg line at those speeds and make sure all drags are set properly as alot of guys tend to snap off when reel inertia comes into play on the hook up . Also i would run them similar to your normal billfish spread except a bit longer .
Heard a talk from David Green a couple of years back on spaniards and he suggested running the shot gun way back for them . the next time we were out we tried it and got results straight up Even though it was an uzi on mono trace but the principal was the same .
Either way use it as a good trip for experimenting , vary your distances , put 5 lines out and hope for a quintuple hookup ;)
