Hi guys, hope you can help me in the quest for mullet.
I have been looking around trying to find a spot to catch some small mullet, poddies or a bit bigger, for bait but have only had limited success. They seen to be either too big for my trap or in water where I can't cast a net or both. Any clues on where & how to catch them in the southern bay or Gold Coast area would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Breaky creek wharf... there is a boat ramp there beside the shops / cafes. Bit harsh on a thin mono cast net - but throw a bit of bread in on the top of the tide when no run... wait til the water bubbles and cast... Only takes 6 casts to have enough bait for a decent session. Mainly poddys around 8cm mark... sometimes odd big one which we use for the crab pots or strip baits... and few prawns (greasys) and herring too.

Appreciate your advice Braddles. Long drive in the boat from the Braoadwater though ;D
Know what you mean about being hard on the net & that has been 1 of my problems. Finding them in a good spot for casting.

Try the northern side of Wavebreak Island. I went there a few months back with a mate to collect some bait... Plenty of poddy mullet, herring, garfish and a few squid. Berley them up with chook pellets or bread...
Alternatively, try the logan river... When the prawns are in season, there are millions of poddy mullet everywhere...
Good luck

This is the place you might want to look, the canals of Hope Is. Resort this is a photo of them schooling early morning, the largers ones are about 15-20cm , use small hooks with cotton wool rubbed in butter after you have burley them with buttered bread crumbs[img]

Thanks guys, muchly appreciated.
That photo is the same sort of country I have found them in - no good for cast netting but I'll give the cotton wool a go.

I used to use the mullet catching outfit but with smaller hooks.
First step was to get some elastic, the type they put in your shorts, make a cirlce about 7 cms accross and stitch the ends together. Then attached 2 peices of line to it, one on each side and then tie together and onto the main line of your rod.
Attach 5 or so short lines about 7 cm long to the elastic at different points with very small hooks and like hungry said use cotton wool dipped in butter on the hooks. Get some old or stale bread and squash it into the elastic, staler the better as it crumbles. Then throw out and wait for the mullet or gar to attack. Any canal system on the coast has tons of these in them ;)
It works really well and have even caught large brim or big mullet on bigger versions.
Cheers

That's a bit bizarre Dan but it might just work :) :) :)
Thanks I'll give it a go.
