Hi everyone,
I regularly fish the canals (2 or 3 times a week) around the Gold Coast targeting Bream and was wondering if i could get a few reports on sizes and quantities caught.
Please specify if you are using bait or SP's and anything else you think is relevant without giving away your prized locations.
As for me, my PB is 38cm.
I always fish for them using a bread pudding mix, 4lb fireline, No. 2 running sinker to swivel, 8-10lb mono leader from swivel to hook and a no 4 octopus hook.
I always fish when the tide is running and prefer to fish around strucutre. Also my preferece is to fish from dusk into the night. Find the bigger ones come out at night.
Recently my catches have been mixed. Typically i would catch about 5-8 each time i go out and release everything i catch. Of course this varies.
Sizes, just in the last two weeks i have caught several 34cm Bream and a mixture of smaller ones. Of course there are always plenty of small ones about.
Is this representative of what the rest of you are catching in the canals?

T-Roy,
are you getting any bigger Bream than usual at the moment?
I seemed to consistantly hook into some big ones back in June and then for the past few months i have only caught the occassional bigger Bream and lots of medium and small fish, however, the last two weeks i seem to be consistantly getting larger ones that have gone around 34cm.
Not sure if i have just been lucky but i am certain my average size has increased just in the last two weeks. Not that i measure every single fish but i know by what i see that they are bigger.
Had a few great fights and been challenged by some picky bites, you have to admire the challenge they give you. Dropped a beauty Thursday night got him right up close then he took off like a rocket and spat the hook. :-/
T-Roy, also, do you catch anything else consistantly in the canals?
I see medium-big mullet regularly, never actually caught one but thats most probably because i am after Bream. Just interested to know what else you pick up in the canals and how you catch them because i may try targeting a different species over summer.

Tips for the Canals, cover as much ground as possible.
There is a LOT of water to cover.
Just get in there, focus on one spot for a while, then move on to the next one.
And don't think the dead ends are barren.
I have picked up some nice fish right up near the Gold Coast race course where the cement weir is.
On the other side of the weir is almost fresh, where they swim the horses!
So just keep covering new ground each time you go out.
You might be surprised at what lives under those jetties and moored boats!

Nice one guys, this is exactly the info i am looking for!!!
I agree Duyz72, recently i have pulled myself away from my regular fishing haunts and it has paid off very well for me with a few lovely Bream. I think exploring is well worth the time and effort. Never been around the race course but i will be sure to check it out soon, thanks for the tip.
Zach, i would love to catch a Trev. this season, a GT would be my preferance but i'll take what ever the gods are willing to provide. I have not caught one yet.
Could you tell me what spinners you are using and any other info that may help to catch one. I have a few SP's and a few hardbodies but my skills with these need much work.
I have heard of Barracuta being about but i have never seen one caught.
Sounds like the Bream i have been getting are in the top end of the size range, maybe just a bit of luck lately, not sure, shall let you know if my run of bigger ones continues. Mind you, i have put in the hours on them so maybe its all paying off?
I have heard reports of loads of Whiting being about at the moment so tomorrow i am going to be after them. Caught a few last year up at the spit but never got any in the canals. I heard they are about near the council chamber so that's where i am heading tomorrow.
See if i can nail a few Bream as well. Good luck if any of you are out....... :)

Nice one Bronson,
I've never really had a great session in Talli Creek, caught a few Bream there but never cleaned up. Best i have found is around the bridge and further up the creek in the park but for me it always seems to be slow.
I did have a good session Monday night, caught about a dozen or more bream all around the 28cm size range, one or two slightly bigger and smaller. This was around one of the bridges close to the heart of Surfers, all caught on bread pudding mix. All released.
Keen to start getting into the SP's and i did throw around a Gulp Turtleback in Pumpkin Seed for about half an hour and got hit by something decent but failed to hook up. Bought some Gulp worms in Cameo and Blood Red and i'll be after the whiting this weekend.
Had a fish for whiting last weekend, not even a sniff. Shall collect some pipis for next weekend and hopefully i will be able to report back with some positive news.
What else have you guys and girls been getting this week in the canals around the Gold Coast? Would appreciate the feedback.

Yellowfin Bream
Common Name: Yellowfin Bream
Scientific Name: Acanthopagrus australis
Family: Sparidae
Found: Queensland, New SouthWales to Victoria
Max Length: 65 cm
Australian Record Size: 4.445kg
Australian Record Length: 66.0cm

84Mick, this is the Aussie record as far as i am aware.
Can you imagine what hooking into a 66cm Bream must be like, amazing..............i'd just be happy to break the 40cm mark.

Are any of you guys consistantly catching whiting?
I had a go this weekend using the Berkley Gulp 'Blood' Worms and i had a few hits by some small fish but nothing decent.
I did see a few larger fish with my polarised sunnies on in the shallows but buggered if they would touch the Gulp.............. :-[
Unfortunately i could not find any pipis the usual place i get them. Will give it another go next weekend.
I hear the run out tide is best and night time better than during the day.
I have tried all around the council chambers and like i said just some small ones touched up the Gulp. Think next weekend i shall have a go up around Seaworld.
Any info on Gold Coast whiting catches would be appreciated.

Good evening Ausfishers,
Bit of an update on what i have been catching in the canals.
Tried for whiting last weekend using the gulp worms in 'Blood' & 'Cameo' around the council chambers, no success but a few hits and follow ups by some very small fish.
Fished the wier at Bond University earlier this week with the Gulp worms, also had a few bumps but no hook up and no fish.
Today i fished the wier again on the out going tide, kicked ass on the Bream but i used bread mixed with crushed green prawns on a number 6 hook, no. 2 running sinker to swivel. Caught about a dozen fish and most were small but i did keep one that went 28cm. Loads of other people fishing with lures, SP's and bait, did not see anyone else land a fish the entire time i was there, loved it!!!!
Best fish came from around the pilons around the varsity towers building. I have heard rumours about good trevally being caught there but like most fishy stories never seen it. Not sure i would fish there agin in any hurry, seems to be lots of smaller fish and lots of inexperienced anglers.
Trying again for whiting tomorrow morning around the council chambers with green prawns. Got to catch some sooner or later and break the hoodoo.
Tight lines...............

I think they need to change their maximum length size - their stats don't make sense....

Had the day off work today boys and hit the canals.........
In the morning i targetted whiting around the council chambers with prawns, caught two small ones and had numerous bites by what i think were more small ones, still to land a decent whiting this spring.............buggered if i can catch them.
Mid way through the session my second rod took off, reel screeming and rod arked over. Turned out to be a sting ray, never realised the ran like that. In the past for me they have always been like pulling in lead weights.
So that was the morning, then went home and took a break and had lunch.
After lunch i fished a few bridges and got a few medium bream then tried the spit and got nothing.
Later on i moved back into the canals for more medium bream. However, this boy landed his first Jack for the season. Beautiful looking fish, small, didnt measure but about 25cm and put on a good fight for a baby, released of course.
The spot i caught it will have to remain a secret because i intend to go back next weekend but it was caught on prawn.
After that i landed a flatty.
So all in all a good days fishing, lots of small and medium fish but good variety. The trevs and decent whiting still ellude me this spring but no doubt with patience they will come.

Look for a undulating bottom for the whiting early start before traffic is better.cheers
