View Full Version : Drum lines for Sharks.

James from what i understand this is a recreational fishing site, drumlining in my book aint recreational fishing, its just killing sharks, more to the point theres no sport in it, its not rocket science to set one up, its actually very simple, but to be honest im pretty sure it would be illegal, and if not it should be, you dont catch tiddlers with drumlines and big ones are no good to eat,and its not as if your actually catching it, more like a trap in my opinion, what do others reckon?

Firstly, does anyone know if its legal to set drum lines up for catching sharks ? Secondly, does anyone know how to set one up ? I am just curious really, hopefully curiousity wont kill the cat.
Cheers

big unit mate - ur setting yourself up for a raefpud name calling, beware because many have been offended before by my name calling, i'm a bit like a bully in a schoolyard. But lucky for you i will bite my tongue, just because your curious, and because i cant really add much to to what Nemo has said.................
you can set up a drum line if you want, but like the famous words of a famous ausfisher once said "it wouldnt stop us from kickin ya in the nuts".
My 2 cents

so raefpud is it illeagle or just moraly wrong or both???
surly it can't be leagal and if it is would have to be the same as set lines and need it taged and with you no more then ten meters away ???
me for one would really have a big problem with someone doing this as i like sharks and don't see why they need to be killed at all just for a trophy
up north they will relocate a problem croc but down south if a white attacks it is shoot and ask questions later! >:(
have no problems with people catching sharks but aslong as they are either released if not for eating or taken and used for food
hell i myself is a bit partial to the old flake [smiley=chef.gif]
I suggest you get a big drum, float it in a canal, anchored preferably, strong wire line. big hook & lots of burley.
Then swim about holding a big hook calling "here sharkey sharkey shark" ;D
If it is not illegal then it is very unsporting.
Boxhead

Why not just go and anchor somewhere and berley hard for a couple of hours and take some of them on on stand up 15kg... This will cure ya curiousity for a while.... You will also be suprised at what else sniffs up the trail....

Quote- I am just curious really, hopefully curiousity wont kill the cat.
Well looks like you cat is dead. I agree with all the following posts. Fishing already has some fights to recognise it as a sport and not 'cruelity to animals' as some state. That question didn't help but I don't think you intended harm and mabey after you make better decisions and after raefpud 'kicks you in the nuts' we can all be freinds again. Oh joy!! ;D [smiley=angel.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Fellas,
Like I originally stated I am just curious with all the recent talk of Sharks and actually heard a guy on talkback radio mention Drum lining but his information didnt sound right to me. So I asked you guys for more correct info. Just for the record, I aint dead, I am not swimming around in a canal with a hook and oh yeah, nobodies gonna kick me in tha nuts without the attempted kicker regaining conscieness with a broken jaw. Go easy men, I just asked a question or two, never did I say that I was heading out to do it. I love fishing and actively promote it.

06-03-2005, 09:43 PM
hahahha - i aint kickin no one in the nuts, its a bit of a low blow, and i prefer to use the "jump up in the air, flying spinning roundhouse kick to the jugular" that jackie chan taught me.....hahahaha - i never made that quote, but if ur really curious as to who did, look under "spearfishing in freshwater" topic in the posts, i thought it was appropriate at the time.
I can gaurantee you that drumlining for sharks is illegal, and many sharks such as great white and grey nurse are now totally protected. Its sad that the poor old "noah" shark is getting such a bad wrap in the media these days, actually no, since the making of JAWS.
Mind you, if i was a shark and i was constantly having my dinner taken away from me, by both rec, pro and spear fishers, having my fins chopped off by poachers, being poked with powerheads, constantly being eaten, hooked and left to drown, caught in prawn nets, and shot at by lifeguards for being stuck in a stupid net on beach that shouldnt have been there in the first place............... i'd probably be pretty pissed off too, and i'd bite the head of any stupid kid that got in my way. Sharks are top of the food chain in the ocean.... keep killing them indiscrimanately like we do and the natural balance of the ocean gets totally F*$#@D, then we all suffer, i can gaurantee that. We are humans, and we walk on the land - if we were supposed to swim in the sea we would have fins and gills. We chose to enter the sharks domain at out own risk, we should bear the consequences, not the shark.

I think most people who live on canal blocks have set up lines overnight to see the dead catch in the morning ... What do you all think of that ? 8)
basserman
07-03-2005, 08:01 AM
adam this is one think i really hate
these are also the same people that normaly hate setlineing in the freash water but do the same off their jettys with a rod over night!
for some reson they think haveing a rod and reel in a rod holder with 80lb line on it over night while leveing it unattended is not setlineing
also gives me the poops when trying to cast my lures to thses same pontoons and unbale because of the lines :P

G’day,
Lets put this into perspective…..
When you place a bait on a hook and secure it to a line you ARE setting a trap for an animal, whether it be 4cm in length, or 4m. Vic Hislop sets the best drum lines in the world. There is no shortage of large sharks in South East Queensland.
Not saying I agree with the style of fishing (as a recreational act), but when executed properly, it certainly works. Nemo84, you say it is basic to rig and set a successful drum line? How many have you set, and how many 1000lb sharks have you caught?
I’m sick to death of reading derogatory posts from people who spill their two cents about sharks, when in actual fact, have very little to back it up.
Regards,
Simon

Raefpud,
Everything you said is valid in an enviromentally redneck kind of way. Sharks & Crocs are the apex water predators but we humans are the worlds apex predator - we can & do kill anything we want. Its unfortunate for most animals. I love all kinds of meat and that means death for whatever I am eating. Mother Natures Rule No 1 - Survival of the fittest.
Trapping & Hunting is an age old practice that will never be discarded, some may see it as unethical and they are called Vegetarians.
So now I know that Drumlining is illegal, still my other question remains unanswered but I dont really care. As per usual there are pros and cons for this question. Like I said earlier I am not going out to do it, I am just curious.
Cheers
James.

Oh by the way its not illegal for fish to have sex with fish, but it is illegal for you to have sex with fish, especially you. So, have you ? Do you pretend to be a fish ? Whats your favourite species ? and lastly if you answer any of these questions you will prove beyond reasonable doubt that you really are crazy and should be institutionalised. lol.

Big Unit,
I think you just lived up to your name. I was actually agreeing with you.... Have you heard of a sense of humour? If not, try to develop one, it can come in handy when communicating with other humans. Let me guess, you like to communicate by beating your chest and making grunting noises... "Australia, if you don't love it, LEAVE." Are you racist?
Get a life..

You spend a lot of time making wierd comments and suggestions. Thats why I took you to task on it. My avatar is a statement of my unquestionable patriotism for the greatest country in the world. I have a sense of humour anyone who calls himself Big unit would, hey Boxhead. I was having a laugh about your antics, thinking to myself have a go at this crazy fella. Big Unit, to your post, "Worlds Apex Predator" give me a human that can fight a great white shark, crocodile, lion, giraffe, zebra, kitten, dog, and so on.. without the use of tools or weapons.. and then i might agree with you, only reason humans evolved to such a high level is because they learned to think and use tools.. without such tools, we are a few kilos of meat wrapped on some bone with the functionality to move.. we dont have any self defence and we have no built in tools to kill, we need a weapon... without tools, humans would be sitting around middle of the food chain.. in India, there is a province where Tigers are world famous for being man-eaters, humans there are middle of the food chain, in the last 12 yrs.. 8000 people have been attacked or killed while gathering food.. mostly honey in the forests...
Hows that for an apex predator ;)

Dont Know if this is what ya talking about
About 20years ago, local abaloney diver fashioned a hook out of a car spring, burleyed up a 20 odd foot white that had been causing grief, killed a lamb and tied on the hook attached to a 44 gallon drum with wire and rope, last seen heading towards new zealand.
probable not what all the fish lovers want to hear, it happened and it was 20 years ago, took us a long to respect the mighty shark

i think this discussion proves that ausfish members are passionite about the protection of our fish species. Ithink you found that out the hard way big unit although i am not saying that you were intenting on setting a drumline. The hunter respects what he hunts and not just for its ability to inflict injury or be dangerous. look at it this way if i walked out side and shot the cat would you class me as a hunter. i am against drumlining and was discusted at christmas time after seeing two sharks finned and left dead on moon point in hervey bay. If the people responsible done it for money for fins class yourself as a grade a ###### and find a job. my two cents >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Raefpud,
I knew you were a tool from your first post. Just repeating the same old bullshit you read in the newspapers and trying to make out you actually know what you are talking about.
As for counting these large sharks: yes, I am doing some research through an undergraduate study with the Queensland University of technology. Research focuses on recording the number of large sharks in the bay, and the impact they are having on turtle and dugong populations.
I’ll ignore the Vic Hislop comment. Drum lines work fine in 3m swells, let alone 2ft of chop. If all you guys hate them so much, maybe you should get onto the Queensland Government. There is an average of 50 drum lines set between Bribie Island and rainbow beach. Most catch on average 3 large sharks a season. There's something they dont tell you in the papers.
So Raefpud, are you on drugs?

Simon

Its a pitty ur not a more frequent poster on this site, maybe u could get to know more about the people and, and the content on this site that makes it such a great site - You could get some very valuable information for your undergraduate research from this site, so be careful about the comments u make, and expect a little criticism about your opinions. I am a Marine Science Hons. graduate. I am currently working and doing some research at Tokyo seafood market. I dont like to brag about my qualifications, but i certainly dont make comments based on my decisions from crap written in your local or state newspapers. I've read plenty of scientific journals, and even done a bit of my own study on the old shark, so why dont you tell us the real story about what happened to that shark on the beach. ? ? ?

Now I'm just curious about Zeekes comment about humans not being the Apex of the food chain etc etc.
Where in the rule book does it say we can't use tools weapons bulldozers or whatever. I always say to work smarter not harder and this is also the case with the food chain. Now if I really just wanted to eat or kill I'd use dynamite or whatever rather than trying to trick a fish with a thin line while not exceeding the lines per boat etc etc Being a nice chap I just don't....
The table is only turned when we give the animals a chance (except for the small microorganisms that noone can figure out...) and the bloody mozzies!!!

I cant believe a bunch of guys who fish for a hobby/sport can complain so bitterly. Who are we to complain so bitterly ? We dont do the nicest things to fish do we. We arent deliberatley cruel but we are cruel sometimes eg; gaffing, live bait, bludgeoning. I am no Greenie/Do gooder but some of us are very self righteous. I try to kill as humanely as possible but it doesnt always happen that way. Get back to reality. Humans are the Apex predators we do have weapons and tools. So is a Drumline illegal ? maybe not. How do you set up a Drumline ? I dont know. Is it immoral ? Well that depends on who you ask and how you personally feel about it. Anyway thats my summisation of this post. Thanks to everyone who got into it.

Simon how many 1000lbs sharks have i caught? None. How many drumlines have i set-up? None. Firstly im not sure if your trying to insult my intelligence by implying i am unable to understand the concept of or construct a drumline, which to be honest is nothing to brag about(not saying it would be the Rolls Royce of drumlines) , and secondly what would i want to catch a 1000lbs shark for? i have no use for a 1000lbs shark and to be honest dont have suitable equipment, if i was gonna try and catch one i'd get myself a capable rod and reel and fish for it with a line before i went and welded shut a 40 gallon drum, welded a length of chain onto it and finally attach a hook with a bait as big as my dog, this aint jaws part 6 and im not the government, id rather catch a big jewie than a big shark, sorry to keep stirring but i felt a little insulted ;) now we can let her R.I.P 8)

James,
Getting back to the original question.
I've seen a drum line being made and seen a drum line put into action. Funnily enough it was on a charter boat and done by the deckies. The skipper told the deckies (who wanted to do it) that they had to ask every person on board whether it was ok.
I'd never seen them in operation before so I said yes - many others were more gun ho. Two big sharks were landed that night and the drum line was put away never to be seen again on our charter.
They then brought out a photo of a Tiger caught on the drum line some years ago - 12 people were sitting on its back #:o :o

James,
The key to a succesful drum line is the rubber straps with rope back-up. Inner tubes seem quicke good and handled some very big sharks. I think the bait was roughly 8 big fish frames from memory.
It's quite a site to see a 25ltr tactic plastic drum pulled under the water :o :o

In all seriousness though, this is Ausfish- a damn good fishing site. I hope all of the comments made are in humour, as all of mine were and no comments offended me in anyway ;) ;D. Some seemed to be mis-understood or possibly intended as an attack or insult to fellow members. If anyone is serious about wanting to talk about how tough they are then go to a fight chat room. I don't know most of you from a bar of soap and if you want to say your tougher than me- then you are- fine with me. Although I used to throw my hands at south-coast boxing championships, millions of people out there could still send me flat without working a sweat. I think this has all been good fun and a way to vent daily frustrations, but it seems that some are taking it serious. If so, then how about we seriously let this post die or a moderator delete it in the best interest of this site. If not, then nows the time to tell you that your mum is fat and she wants me bad ;D ;D ;D
My LAST post on this topic.
Cheers, Jay.

Firstly ba229 i dont give a toss what "they" like to do, i was talkin about myself and mackmauler i know your a top notch fisherman, much respect to that, but if you think the reason i wouldnt chase one is due to lack of balls than you can put raef's balls in your mouth and hum his favourite song, think of it as more giant sharks for you to catch you ocean commando you ;D
P.S ur pic looks like the IRA on a fishing trip ;) all in good fun... 8)

I have been avoiding this post since it started as I have no interest in Drum lining for sharks. #I have just now read it for the first time, because it seemed to be getting so much interest.
Wow #;D great entertainment. #::) ;D Thanks guys ... made my night #;D
There should be an alert system when one of these posts starts up, so that we don't miss out for so long. #Maybe Steve Mr Ausfish could create a flag to signify "sh!t fight in progress" # ;D ;D ;D

hahaha - can you all please take my balls out of your mouths - i think my balls have been thrown around enough - how about copping mackmaulers knackers in ur gobs for a while - hahahaha - its all good fun guys, and i get hours of great entertainment from these types of posts - and for those of you who have read my posts before, i have just found a new ausfish member that has gone straight to No.1 in the hitlist - can anyone guess who it is?
Who raef? I bet we are all just dying to know! [smiley=sleeping.gif]
Oh, by the way, I'm still under the bed. Grandma set the computer up underneath the bed for me, so I don't have to come out of hiding. Grandma is sitting on her rocking chair on the front porch with a loaded .22 pointing down the drive-way. I told her that if she see's a dairy cow pull up outside the house holding an australian flag and singing walt sing matilda, to shoot it down at all costs.
This is good therapy, Mick

You guys are Australias most funny. Undisputed and unanimous decision. I wish this kind of humour was more prevelant in todays society. Good on ya fellas, I hope nobody does take this banter seriously though, it would be very unAustralian of you. I havent laughed so hard in a while. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
So Raef, Youve acquired a new target. Who is it ? I can see a few that would include me. :-* :-* By the way you created some horrible visual pictures.
Maybe this post should be called " Sh!t fight in progress " it certainly would be more fitting. I would love to say this is my last post on this topic but I know someone out there needs to be humoursly insulted. So I will check back after the New Zealand Drumlining championships which I have decided to enter after all this encouragement. God bless & God speed to you all.
Cheers
James.
Ok, I'm slowly crawling out from under the bed...., ooh..., hang on..., grandma wants her feet rubbed, so I am going back under for a while.
Big uni, I will enter the In Zid drumleening chimpionships with you. I think if wi sit one up from Bitiny biy in Sydniy, to Aukland in In Zid, wi shild git a fiw. I think it will be choice cos. Wi can have fesh n cheps if wi git a fiw sheeks.

Silly me - what was I thinking (knocks oneself out with a quick left) [smiley=dizzy.gif]
Hey bugman, I admit I did laugh a few times when one of your serious comments was sitting amoung 10 or so other posts in a shite flinging contest. Your posts sort of looked like a polar bear in the sandy desert, yet probably made more sence then most of the other crud that had been written (me inclusive).

yeh i must admit that Mick is without doubt the most creative of us all concerning this post, mate i would recommend your granny upgrades the .22 to something a lot more powerful, if Big Unit is half as tough as he reckons. Interesting 'discussion'....nothing wrong with killing & eating a shark, especially if you're a Victorian like myself.I've caught and eaten White Pointers ( when it was still legal) and found them to be superb.
With the sporting factor,I get really PISSED OFF when people posting are inclined to use 30-50lb braid, fireline etc to catch snapper for example or 10lb fireline for Bream or Flathead, knowing that it breaks at MUCH higher strength.Wasn't too long ago that you'd say that you caught a fish such as a 14lb snapper,on 20lb mono and that was it.Now there are fish being skull-dragged on other lines with the 'angler' knowing full well that they are hardly likely to risk a bust-off.Kinda HOLLOW VICTORY in my opinion...like the scenes of tournament catchers just hooking up on a fish and having it in the boat in a fraction of the time with a pittance of actual playing skill required. :(

The big sharks aren't that good to eat are they? I think I read on one of the threads that big sharks flesh stinks??
Is the flesh of big sharks full of some chemical that gives off the foul smell??

You get it on some small ones as well, mostly female. I think it's when they're on heat or in pup. Soaking in milk removes it.

I found this diagram on the DoPI website.
I know they have them for a reason, but it's a bloody cruel way of controlling sharks. I am sure they dont use them in South or Western Australia and there are some fairly scary Great Whites down there.
If not illegal, it should be along with longlining, deep sea trawling and trawling on or near the GBR
Cheers

Yeah they arent good, but then again most fishing techniques result in a cruel death.
Some techniques are far worse then others.

I just found this -
Three illegally set up drum lines have been found off the WA coast in the last few months. A four week operation involving Police and other enforcement agencies failed to locate any persons who could be held responsible for setting them up. The drum lines were destroyed.
Im not sure how old that article is ? :-/
I just dont get why someone would set one up, then just leave it although if you got wind that the law was coming for you I guess you would forget about it unless you were really screwed up, but then I reckon those types of people are pretty screwed up.
Looking at that diagram, I would say they cost a few dollars to make.

The drum lines set up by government contractors didnt stop that kid losing his leg in WA. Just read that it would have swam past three drumlines.
Maybe the big sharks are getting to know what drum lines are ?
