Going to go down aroud Hamilton 2moro night with my deep sea overhead rod/reel to try and catch my first Brisbane River Bull Shark. Just wondering if anyone can give me a few tips to improve my chances.. I was going to go about 6pm & use:

Bait: A large mullet cut in half (put about a fists worth of fish on)
Trace: 1.5m steel trace
Line: roughly 35pound
Weight: Heavy ball sinker

Should this do the trick?

It should. Nicely! The only problem will be if there are a lot of 'pickers' about because they will knock the mullet off very quickly. A live bait would be perfect if you can manage to catch something. Yellowtail Pike perhaps?

i've heard of a guy down who fishes the bremner river/bris river. he apparently catches a shark every time he goes. i was told he uses a catfish with its head cut off. i guess the catfish are their natural prey, and the blood must attract them.
i'm yet to try myself though.

cheers Owen

Try and get a livey. And iff it isnt big enough throw a couple or a few on the one hook.

Catching cat fish in the upper reaches is a joke...you will get one about 20 seconds after you cast normally. Cut some sipes in it to bleed it some and then fish using it as bait.....and wait for the big bang!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeh i reckon using catfish is the best bait for catching sharks... nice and bloody!

just cut the tail off and put that on a hook... as for the head.. use for crab pot..

Hey guys

Any live fish is deadly on small bullies. I fish the upper reaches of the Brisbane often and a live mullet/herring is my first choice;D

hey guys - never fished for shark, although family in Victoria does.

But what is the attraction, is it for the action?

Because any reef sharks I've caught in the past give the big bang but then come up pretty easy.

Or is it for the feed? are they good eating?
