Steve - for $500 you will be looking at some of the higher end black and white sounders such as the Lowrance 125 or Furuno LS-4100. For the bay and a little offshore work you won't need a dual frequency model but if they fit into the budget get one. I personally would rather have a high end B&W unit than a low end colour.

Garmin 250 may also be one to look at. I dont know much about Hummingbird models but someone else may help there.

Good shopping

Steve,

Greg was spot with the Furuno 4100,they come in well under $500 and are a very good monochrome sounder.
For the price you want to spend a good mono sounder is the best option. The matrix 27 fits into that bracket, dual frequency and comes standard GPS ready if you ever want to attach a GPS aerial.
Also the Humminbird 565 is in that price range.

Give us a call here at the shop for further information .
