I have just bought a 600L sounder and I am having trouble with the shield wire and the earth terminal. I have an alloy boat that has the neg running through it. If I connect these wires to the boat will it do any damage to the sounder, or am I better off just connecting the power cable to a seperate battery

I also run the 600L Furuno . Mine is a glass hull so can only speak for that installation . I only have the power cable and the transducer cable connected on mine and it works fine . Did not worry about the earth cable . I would connect the power cable to positive and negative feed from a terminal strip preferably . There are others here with tin boats who may have more info . Over to them .

I'd try it without the earth plate first, mine works fine with out it but I'm in a glass boat as well,I've got my power leads running straight off the battery to the unit plug, after each trip the sounder comes inside with me so no power is continualy feeding into it.

Gidday Bramsay and welcome to Ausfish :)
Hate to tell this matey but that (the boat as a negative return) is one of the biggest NO-NO's in boats.
Causes all sorts of problems sooner rather then later. In my opinion it's time for a rewire very soon.
Some other people may have opinions on this and all is welcomed.
Sorry for the bad news but better finding out and fixing now then trying to fix on the water. :)
Where abouts are you located??
Cheers Scott

Alloy boat and running a negative ground is not good as finga said. Get that changes very quickly and run everything trough bus bars or you will end up owning a piece of swiss cheese.

Yeah Scott big no no in my book too. Run a pos and neg up to the dash and split from there. I think the auto sparkys amongst us would agree. Andrew.

G'day all,
I ran the wires straight to the battery. I gave it a run on the weekend and it seemed to work okay. I tried to work out why the boat is earthed it must have something to do with the motors wiring. I will have to see the mechanic.
Thanks for your comments.
