anyone out there using google earth plus, interested to see if the resolution is much better compared to standard. I have a garmin 72 wondered if I could use google to mark waypoints instead of buying blue charts that would be abit of a waste as 72 doesn't support mapping thanks for any feedback Fingers

Not sure fingers but I 99% certain that under maritime legislation somewhere a recreational skipper is required by law to carry marine charts for the intended area of operation.
A good up to date marine chart is invaluable and I doubt there would be many responsible Boaties who don't carry them on their boat!
When yer GPS chucks it's guts in, always nice to have something to fall back on! ;) ;)

I upgraded to Google earth plus and found the resolution change either minimal or non existent - it is very difficult to tell if there is an improvement as the resolution changes from one location to another.

Chart wise, i have a beacon to beacon on my boat.
Best invention yet for boaties, saves having big charts on board

I don't know if the Beacon 2 Beacon actually covers you for navigation.... From my (slightly alcohol affected) memory, you have to carry a navigational map onboard when going into partially smooth waters...
Can someone confirm (or tell me I'm wrong) that?

Navigation chart, liquid damped compass, other direction finding or positon equipment is not manditory under legislation according to my offical rule and regs book.
It does however come under "a safety obligation' suggested in the standard, placing the onus on the boat master.
Check out the Maritime Safety Queensland website.

Charts and/or Compass are definately only "Recommened Safety Equipment" says so page 8 Maritime Safety Queensland's Beacon to Beacon Directory 6th Edition (they make the rules).
But it all comes back to my old "Cub Scout" days "BE PREPARED".
As for Way Points grab yourself one of those GPS books for about $12. Heaps of points some of them are spot on, others pretty close. That and a half decent sounder is all you need.
