I need to upgrade my sounder, I have a budget of under $1000 and I think my choice has come down to either the navman 4500 or Lowrance x107 cdf being new to this I was looking to all your experiances and dealings with this issue which would be the best option. I have a 5m C/C and will be doing a lot of work in the bay and when the weather allows a trip to the Banks will be on the cards. I am toying with the idea of a combo GPS/Sounder but am a little put of from the size of the screens when split. any advice will be helpfull :)

Awsome detail on the 107 ... there is also a couple of DVD's based on Lowrance / Eagle to give help with the learning curve. I looked at the 4500 as well and had the store demo them side by side ... made my decision in about a second.

You can also use it with an EP-10 fuel flow meter, which I can also say works great. I'm not 100% on this but I think the lowrance has a bit more grunt as well?!? Don't quote me on that.

My opinion only ...

i run a navman 4600 next model up and would highly reccomend the navman sounders, really are agreat sounder and would think both are same watts as each other do some research on line watts are what really counts thats the strenghth of your transducer 450 is ok 600kw is really good
pixels of screen is the other thing they talk about this is the clarity of your display on your sceen should also be considered ,just remember if not good watts doesnt matter what your pixels are must have the power in the first place
good luck

Lets stir the pot...

Navman, easily. Mainly because no other sounder can pick up depth and sonar aswell as Navman, its easy to use, and i beleive its a little cheaper then the others (dont quote me on that).

Lowrance is extremely well known and i think everyone has one. We did have one (model i can remember, though it was one of the latest), switched to Navman and no regrets. Lowrances can be difficult to operate and can pick up alot of crap and put it un-nessacarily on the screen i have found.

Navman.

Good luck with the navman theo,
wont be long before it doesnt pick up the bottom or the screen looks likea dogs dinner,or any of the other faults that seem to appear..
THe rep will then tell you the transducers can be faulty or some other excuse for crappy gear..

Bugger any of the afore mentioned sounders, get a Raymarine , Furuno or a JRC . The first 2 have reasonably priced models that compete price wise with above mentioned sounders. The digital ability of the raymarine is worth every cent.

Im thinking about buying a combo pack from whitworths, fish finder 4500 transom mount and tracker 5500 and fuel sensor. Both colour for $1999-90.
I donot think it realy matters what you run so long as you can read the screens and operate the equipment properly.
Dont take any notice of the pics that skippa has posted because they are false taken from another baot and he boasts about it being his. ;D ;D ;D :P

Gawby,
i recon if ya gonna spend 2 grand you wou would not need to be worried about performance.Navman is not simple to operate and not reliable in my opinion.Do a search and check out others who have had bad experiences.. Member ANYFISH for one...

Gday
I thought me ears were burning.
I had a navman 440? sounder that worked for a while then played up. Thats ok because all brands probably have dud sounders but this one was sent back a few times (3 from memory) in the warranty period to get fixed [smiley=smash.gif]. After the warranty period was up and it played up again i threw it in the bin [smiley=im_delete.gif] and bought a lowrance that hasn't missed a beat. Maybee after the third time back to navman they should have replaced it or something??

Thats why i say LOWRANCE for shure ;D ;D

Good luck Anyfish

I have a fish 4500 and 5110i plotter in my new boat and i went to navman after having lowrance in my 12 footer, the lowrance sounders worked well but the plugs kept tracking across and burning out even with removing the battery from boat when not in use

Have the Navman 4600 and very happy with it.

Just connected it to the merc using smartcraft, get detailed fuel stats that are more accurate than normal fuel flo sensors as it interfaces to the fuel management computer, various digital gauge displays showing speed, temps, volts, etc, can set troll speed by rpm or speed using various sources, display's trim and turn angles, access to engine fault logs and have it display alarms.

Also have the Navman 7200 and GPS and have some data shared between them using navbus, have had no problems.

I love my x107cdf!!!
Have one in my tinny and one in my mates offshore boat. Extremely easy to use. Easy access to menus, and adjustments,We see things now we never saw before. Shows crystal clear at flat bikkies!!! Has made finding new ground very, very easy. Good back-up service too!!

Regards, Tony ;)

That's a bugga, Anyfish. The back up service from any business is almost as important as the product itself.

I have had personal experience with the Lowrance service department, and they scored 10/10. My Uncle bought a second had LMS350 that was still under warranty period. Had trouble, so sent it back at Lowrances expense and they replaced the unit in no time at all, no questions asked.

I have been using Lowrance for sometime now and cannot fault them, and just thinking about, not one hic up !!!!!!!

The 107 is a great unit, as Tony says, sounding the bottom while travelling can be very rewarding, and you need a good sounder ( set up correctly ) to do that. The 107 will do it.
