anybody set up a safety lanyard on an electric motor, should be easy enough to do. Might look into it.

yeah mate,
Just use a 65A relay with the lanyard switch going throught the control circuit.

I used a momentary pushbutton switch mounted on the control tiller so as soon as the operator lets go the outboard stops

There are other push buttons available that can be mounted anywhere.
This is not truely a lanyard switching scenario but works just as good without the hassle of chords
