Hull mounted Transducers???

Hi Guys, My question is, are hull mounted transducers safe when mounted, or can they be mounted on a plate near the transom?? I have had no experience with these types and am a bit worried it might be a target to get smashed off, unintentionally, as it may! Any thoughts would be appreciated.
