I know these have been covered to some extent in the Minn Kota thread but I think they need a thread of their own as others may be interested after seeing the latest flyer.

I notice the 54lb 105cm stainless shaft is selling for only $399 dollars :o at a certain sports store. Would this be ok stern mounted pushing my 3.95 stacer?

There's no mention in the flyer but surely this price doen't apply to the bow mounted version?

Transom to keel on the stacer is 54cms..should I go for one with a shorter shaft ie 44lbs= 91cm shaft........ =34lbs = 78cm shaft or will I be underpowered.

Forgive my ignorance but I've never even considered or looked at one before but after a plastic session with Brandon and seeing these prices, I think it's worth me considering one.

cheers

Kev i think you will need the 54lb for ease of use. Ill be putting one on my new Rig (19th Dec cant come quick enough :'( ) when it arrives but the bowmount version ($799.00) I know its twice the money but the bow mount is ALOT easier to use hands free etc....
The 54lb should be able to keep you head on into a strongish current most of the time. We have had a few times when a 55lb Minkota wouldnt even hold us into a run out tide on the richmond (we were right down near the mouth and it was a few days after some good rain)so really depends on where you fish mostly i guess.

Kev
######## online catalogue has that model for $369. Dunno about freight cost. Might get a few dollars knocked off for you if you want to bargain

Go the 54lb Kev the extra length shouldn't be a problem.
Transom mount is $369 at most outlets (no need to go to the marts ;) )
$799 for the bow mount-foot control. We have sold a few now and all reports are good so far.

I had a 39lb minn Kota on the back of my 4m qunnie and it just was not enough... it was really only good for holding or slowing down a drift.. I have just put the Bow Mount 54 watersnake on,,, Wow love it ;D ;D...

Thanks for the replies fellers. Just got back from looking at 'em and they seem ok apart from the prop that looks a bit soft.........all 3 models on display had the tips of the blades bent. I suppose that's what comes from having kids unpack 'em and drag 'em to the display shelf......they were doing it when I got there.

Haven't made my mind up yet, which way to go as Chrizzy is round the corner and the kids want their goodies first. As I nearly always have the deckie with me and she likes to steer, I suppose the transom mount may be the go........and she's more likely to give me the money for the cheaper option ::) ;D. The only problem I can see atm is the bloody carrying handle on the transom of the stacer will get in the way.....I'll have to think about that one.

Kev,

I think that the prop is intentionally bent to help push weed away. I could be wrong I will check mine in the morning. There is nothing wrong with the props mate, mine has recieved a hiding recently including the dam wall at macdonald. just got battle scars now ;D

OK mate. At 25 bucks the props aren't a problem anyway.

Managed to get one for 379 with a spare prop thrown in. Stern drive ('cause I'll have the deckie with me and she wouldn't finance me for the bow mount) ;D

The motor fits the transom perfectly. Now to think up a way of making an extension for the handle.

Hi all,
Ive got a 4.75 Allycraft c/c, not sure of distance from top to bottom at the bow, anyone with a similar boat have one of these motors bow mounted. I mainly fish outside but enjoy the dams occassionaly and was thinking of a minnkota, but I've had a look at these new ones and have been following the threads on same. The only problem I could see is the length of the shaft on the 54lber being a bit short? Any sujestions/help greatley appreciated.

Thanks Kev,
but I think it's 24v isn't it? And if it is, not sure I want to go to the trouble of setting up dif volt to current setup.

Bugger I missed the start of this thread :(

Sounds good though Kev!! I think you won't have any problems with the 54 pushing your tinny ;) the one i have is only 40!! but then again my tinny is a bit smaller at 3.7mtrs.

If you are having problems steering it into a wind or currnet, turn the boat around and reverse along the run you want to fish ;) it holds the line sooo much easier pulling the boat along then pushing it ;)

Kev - For an extension handle (If they work the way I'm thinking), you could get a piece of PVC that fits over the handle. Cut a few slots up the end of it, and put a clamp around it to tighten it on.

Then you can twist the pipe for speed, and steer.

Cheers,
Dan

(As I said, I THINK this is how they work :P)

A simpler way Dan. The handle is an eliptical shape 35 by 30. I got a 40mm pipe and 8mm down I drilled a hole each side and put a split pin through it effectively making it 32 deep. Pushed the pipe onto the handle as it still fits along the short side. As you turn the pipe the split pin will not go past the longer edge of the handle which is 35 and therefore turns it.

Hope this is clear enough for anyone wanting to make an extension.

Rob, 24v or 12 volt - they still need their own power supply. It doesnt affect the main wiring system. I ran a 30lb Kota on the boat battery and was using the pull start cause I flattened the boat battery after a few hours. I had no lights at night until the engine was running again, thats not good.

Then I decided Id need a deep cycle battery, cause with all the recharging going on Id kill the main battery pretty soon.

So buy a deep cycle, 12v or 24v.

Andrew
