Species:29lb Cobia(aka Black Kingfish)
Location:Western Cape York QLD between Jackson and Skardon River
Gear:Ian Miller built Loomis GLX 10/11# Mega rod, Ross Canyon 6 reel, 50lb Bionic Braid, Scientific Angler 11# Striper Intermediate, 10kg tippet
Fly:Grey/White Kinkyfibre Clouser on a 2/0 Gamakatsu SL12
I was drifting over a bait school, when I noticed some "nervous water" and swirls moving towards our boat. On 2nd cast I hooked up. I was expecting a queenie after I got the fish back to the boat after its 1st run that barely got into the backing.
Only when it was near the boat do I pick it for a cobia. The cobia spooked and tore off 200+ meters of line. We fought the fish for 40 minutes and followed it for about a Km.
I was very lucky. I only just lipped it. If it had taken the fly deep, it would have worn through my tippet in a couple of minutes.
