Brian
That is a great catch out of a 4 metre boat. Of course, the Queenslanders up here would claim that is about the size of the bait they need to use up here to catch a 'decent' sized fish.

Hey Brian
Maybe if it is still blowing hard down there you may wanna try in fortesque and pop ya nose out in the Tasman that way ya still can chase a blue if it isnt to bad but if it is bad then ya still got some good fishing in at fortesque bay....just an idea to toy with or maybe head out to marion bay at least you may get to wet aline
cheers

i know what ya saying ozdevil we was going to try that one last week 30-40 knot n-w bit to much excitement for me.we did a lot of diving and fishing in fortescue this year the fishing is really bad in the bay even the crays are a bit short. out side of the bay the couta are so thick you could walk on them.some of them with about $100.00 worth of my tuna lures hanging out of them . bye for now brian66
ozdevil
27-06-2002, 07:07 AM
Gday Brian
Mate i know how ya must feel with the couta about mate swallowing ya tuna lures......It wouldnt be so bad if they were hooked rather then going for ya swivels......
anyway cheers
brian66
27-06-2002, 04:19 PM
hello ozdevil your sure right there.i even tried going right down in swivel size. it doesent seem to make any differance. if you can keep the couta on the surface and wind like crazy its allright if it goes under the rest chase the swivel.doesent seem to be away round it. just grin and bare it. any way enought of me. hows the fishing up your way.

Very Dead mate went out last weekend to find myself coming back in wanted to chase a few snapper and KG Whitingout in the gulf but to my luck it was coming in a bit to hard for me so ended up chasing bream and Mulluway in the Port River with out any succes but hopefully this weekend i will be able to chase a few reds and whiting but it has been rather quite
cheers

Gday Brian
Mate if ya get the chance to fish for snapper mate go for it i call them steam trains as soon as they take ya bait they head for the horizon but they do become a lazy fighter after the first initial run........ When i was living in Tas i heard they get the reds up near bateman bridge area.....If you do decide to go up that way i would also try for King fish mate...King fish over here in S.A is just Taking off in August or late july planning on going to port augusta to chase a few kings......
Hopefully tommorow if all goes according to plan there should be some good fish after the big blow we had Yesterday as wind reach 100km/h and should have stirred the fish into a frenzy specially after it was full moon on tuesday
Mate I hope the winds ease for ya so ya can get out for afew fin and i would love to see these pics mate as soon as ya get to work out how to down size them......
cheers

G'day Ozdevil. Finally got out on Sunday they were there all right. We found them in Munro Bight. They were travelling flat out. Trolled around them with no luck. Had to let them go about 2 mile behind the Hippolyte. We then trolled down to Tasman. I finaly hooked up at Tasman only to lose it at the boat(est 40kg). The big boats were hooking up all around us, but no more luck for us. Heard one of the big boats say they had boated 2x70kg fish. Just wasn't our day. Brian66.
ozdevil
02-07-2002, 07:23 PM
Gday Brian
Mate i heard some small trailer boat hooked up to 6 bluefin with the biggest going 45kgs........I heard the tuna where travelling quite quick prolly chasing the bait schools.....Mate you must have been disappointed to lose ya fish at the boat mate...but thats fishing......
I hear the water temp was around 13 degrees prolly another agree or 2 higher mate may have really brought them on.....but at least you got out mate... i didnt even wet the boat this weekend as i had commitments around the home (blody women) anyway sunday i manged to wet a line but that was only in the torrens river for bloody swamp trout caught a couple around the 4kg mark.....
Well its going to be a dead weekend this weekend as there is a dodge tide coming up and the fishing this month is going to die right off as its coming up to the bloodworm run which means things go hell quite and prolly time to catch a few jewies thou so might head out saturday night for the buggers...
But by the looks of things you guys down in tas may be getting an extended run of the bluefin this season.....
PT Macdonald was rather quite this year but mind you i heard the boats couldnt get out due to the weather but when they managed to get out the fish where really thumpers for S.A Standards the biggest i heard went around 30kgs....
Anyway if my Finances Work out Hopefully in april i will be bringing my 17 Seafarer cuddy cab over with me... its going to be an expensive trip but hopefully it will be worth it ......As i am very eager to try out my new Fishing outfit on the tuna Which is a shimano 15kg backbone series with a shimano charter special spooled with 30 pound braid.....
Have you actually tried braid out on the tuna as i am very interested to see how braid is when trolling for tuna....
Anyway it sounds as if ya had a ball brian i wish i was out there with you guys chasing the buggers but hey some have to put up with just snapper i spose
anyway brian cheers mate
ps how did the norseman go or is it still up north

gday oz devil hope it all comes together for ya .sounds like a hell of a plan bringing the boat down here to tas. let me know when the time gets closer and i can give you a update on how they are running.nice rod & reel. (shimano the only way to fish)i havent tried any other lines only mono so im not much help to you.the only charter boat i saw was the big pig.im hopeing to take my boat down sat.hopefully they will still be afew inshore.the ones we followed out the back of the rock were last seen heading your way at 300 mph.might sound like a silly question but cant they be caught in s/a or is it only for the big boats .
ozdevil
03-07-2002, 07:11 PM
Gday Brian
Mateit is a plan mate just matter of coming up with the finances and finding a buddy to fish with while over there who actaully likes gamefishing and has a bit off understanding as most of my mates over there in Tas are not big on gamefishing just prefer to put around for flathead.........Another reason why i want to bring the boat across as to see how well she handles Tassies conditions cos if all goes according to plan in about 2-3 years i maybe moving back.....
Anyway about the Bluefin in Over here mate We can catch them we just have to drive great distances to get them....Port lincoln and Port mcdonell or mcdonald are the Places to be and it is big boat territory i wouldnt venture out in less then a 5 metre....In the Gulfs its very shallow and Tuna havent been seen for years in the gulf..... Which i think a dam shame as water temps will hold em in The gulf as the gulf is around 17 degrees at the moment...
Apperently of Victor harbour 20 odd years ago the last bluefin showed up and you could them with a 12 foot tinny so i have been told.....
Unfortunately Gamefishing here in South Australia is not really viable as i believe they are very patchy and not really as stable as they are down Tas....
I am planning a couple of trips either to port lincoln or Port Mcdonnell next year but if i tie in my tassie trip if according to the plan i may be able to get a trip in down at port mcdonnell....
Mate Has Tassie started to cotton on to GPS yet as i think they are such a handy device as i can remember when i left Tassie no one had gps except the charter guys.....I would be lost with out my gps....
So Brian when your luanching down there in ya 4 mtre do you leave from pirates or fortesque......and have they updated the ramp at fortesque yet...
Hows the stripey fishing going down that way they getting a few of them when things are quite with the bluefin????
anyway cheers mate

G'Day ozdevil, Sounds like I am pretty lucky down here in Tassie.(Mate you gotta get out of there.) Suppose a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do. Anyway I will try to answer your questions. A few blokes are using G.P.S. I don't know much about them though cos when it comes to electronics I am an idiot. Anyway it would probably just be something else I would lose, bust, drown or have to get fixed. I always use the Fortescue ramp, it has a walkway now and has been fixed up a bit. The big boys still have trouble at low tide though cos it's still a bit short. The trumpeter are out there, it's just been a bit windy to have a good go at them. We were going to have a go at them on Sunday but when we lost our only fish I demanded to my mate that we keep on trolling. In the hope of redeeming myself. :-[ By the way you had me going with th swamp trout bit, I haven't heard that one before.(Carp, right?) They have destroyed Lake Crescent and Sorell down here. You have still got me on the dodge tide and bloodworm run though. ??? Got to go fro now mate(bloody work).Brian.
ozdevil
04-07-2002, 09:16 PM
Gday Brian
Mate ya wanna get yaself a GPS mate they do come in Very handy ya can get ones the can be permently mounted in the boat so ya dont lose them.....
Mate Swamp trout Ya bloody right there Carp... Not much fun to eat but they are a great fertiliser and bait for Blue swimmers and they do put up a good fight on light line....but my ultimate frshwater fish i wanna go for is the goodoo mate they are a prized catch here in S.A and Vic......
Brian a Dodge Tide is when there is no water movement or very little between the tides which brings no fish about
The blood worm run
Well it something that only comes once a year and it happens in july and brings the fish in but one problem the fish feed heavily on these blood worms as the blood worms are heading out to sea....and the fish dont bite as well as they are pretty full up.....
When this happens the water looks like blood....Its an interesting thing to see.....
Its good to see fortesque is getting a little better.....Mate if i could move back tommorow and have a full time job i prolly would move back but as you know employment down In Tas is pretty well slim.....
My fiance and me have Said we will move back one day but its just a matter of when......I do hope to be back in Tassie living with in the next couple of Years....
So What is Happening with Lake crescent and Sorell is the inland fisheries still trying to get rid of the flamming carp......
Anyway time to hit the sack So ciao for now
cheers

gday ozdevil. GOODOO.what the !!!!!!! mate i told ya, ya gotta get out of there before it's too late. Interesting thing about the bloodworms, never knew about that. The fisheries have been netting and electro fishing to try and get rid of the swamp trout (I like that one). My understanding of it is that they stun them with some kind of electrical devise and they float to the surface. Don't quote me on that one though. 30-40 knot s.westerlies on Sat, you gotta be kidding. I haven't got the Sunday forecast yet but I don't like the look of it. Alright mate gotta go now and have a think about those bloody Goodoo. Brian. P.S What kind of work do you do, I'll find you a job so that you can do some real fishing.
ozdevil
05-07-2002, 07:40 PM
Gday Brian
Mate 30-40 knot south westerlies mate ya can have them but its going to be worse here this weekend as its a dodge tide the fish dont bite to well but hopefully i will be out after a jewie with a live shittie......
Mate they were doing that way back in 96 with those electric stunning things they would be better of dragging a net accross it.....
Mate a goodoo is a murray cod mate very good fish but most people release these days just for pure respect for the fish.....
Mate I used to be a cnc machinist mate i am currently between work at the moment bloody buggars put me off 2 weeks ago becuase work they had no work for me...
But far as work goes i will do just about anything......
Mate i would dearly love to get back to tassie someday hopefully in the near future to live so i can do some real fishing.....
anyway cheers mate

gday ozdevil.no fishing this weekend. (gale wind warning).murry cod mate read something obout them a while ago . is it true that they are becoming a threatened species. mate i never tried using shittie as bait.mine uasually stinks to much and i recon it wouldnt stay on the hook to good. i never heard of cnc machineist i might need bit more info on that one .hope your weekend is a bit more fishy than mine see ya latter mate .brian
ozdevil
07-07-2002, 07:49 PM
Gday Brian
Mate it is true they are becoming a bit that way and what makes things worse in My opinion is that the South australian fisheries are suggesting we should stock up on bloody trout where Murray Cod is part of the fishery here in South Australia...Its really unbelieveble what governments think of...
Mate a shittie here is what ya call a striped trumpeter believe it or not very good jewfish bait
Mate the weather is absolutely a shocker here this weekend i went and had a look this morning and i said to myself iaint heading out in that bloody washing machine...as we have had some storms here yesterday with hail as big as golf balls thunder and lightning and i thought i could nearly luanch me boat in the back yard thats how bad we had it here yesterday and today well calm on the land but the water was being a prick...
Mate if the weather gods treat me bad i send the weather down to you Tasmanians so i dont feel bad
cheers

gday ozdevil the wind down here is really howling. i know a bloke who was going down after tuna in a big boat this weekend .i will be seeing him tommorow to see how he went.mate i know what you mean about the fisheries. over here in there great wisdom they decided to stock lake pedder with more trout .now instead of having a trophy lake with average weight of fish being 10-13 lb we now have average fish being 1-2 lb they just cant help them self.mate ive got a good video here at home called sport fishing tasmania, with steve starling.he catches bluefin yellow fin marlin .dont know if you might find it over there in the video shop it is pretty old but well worth watching. ok mate better git going for now brian66
ozdevil
08-07-2002, 07:14 PM
Gday Brian
Mate i have seen theat video upteen manytimes the other month i actually reminded starlo of his adventures from down South......
I new the guys who were fishing on the harvenger when Steve Starling filmed that documentry and a friend of mine John Taylor i think organised that trip on the harvenger with Starlo....
Is John Squizzy Taylor still doing the right ups in the Sunday Tasmanian....
I actually use to fish with john a fair bit when i was living in Tas....
I tell ya what Brian all this talk about bluefin and Tassie mate its starting to make me feel homesick....i reckon if i didnt meet my woman i would be still stuck in Tassie..but the things we do for love....
So Does Ashley hallem Still poke around down south for the tuna or mako's????
anyway better go buddy its time i shut the eye lids
cheers

hello ozdevil mate it is a good video i have nearly wore mine out .sometimes i watch it the night before a trip.john taylor still writes the fishing bit in the sunday tas and always does a great job.i should post it on the site but it uasually takes me about half an hour to type you a letter because i cant type for nuts.plus there might be some legal reason why not.the name hallem rings a bell.( dont know why).i got the report today from my mate at work .there were only a hand full of boats down there saturday. but they all caught tuna. average .40 kg. glad i didnt go he said it was rough as.he also said the looked like they weren't in a hurry to go any were.(there may still be hope for me) mate if i dont get to go this weekend i will probibly be divorced, cause i think see might be sick of me stressing.ps mate do ya really know steve starling or ya having a lend of me.see ya for now brian66
ozdevil
09-07-2002, 06:42 PM
Gday Brian
Mate its great to see the bluefin still hanging about and looks as if you may get out eventually this weekend best day most likey will be Saturday with a 60% prediction and 50% being on a sunday according to my fishing predictor for Hobart ideally you should be out there tues wed thursday with predictions of 80%.....
Mate Do i know Steve Starling to be honest with you mate i have spoken to him on the odd occasion in a chat forum not the ausfish forum but another fish forum.....
mate it takes me an hour to type a post to ya mate its bloody hard when ya gotta type with ya little toe
mate i know what ya mean mate i havent been able to get for a while myself i started the boat up yesterday.....hopefully on Saturday i will get out and hopefully catch a few nogguns......but the only bad thing about catching these bloody nogguns mate is a 2/person limit but hopefully a few squire are hanging around as well and a few chinese fish.....
anyway mate don't stress to much buddy ya can always take a sickie
cheers
ozdevil
brian66
10-07-2002, 05:12 PM
gday ozdevil. nogguns mmm.i think i got ya this time(snapper right)but you have got me on the other 2.mate i know what your saying obout your little toe, but think your self lucky you dont have to use ya elbow. mate i would like to have as much faith in your predictor as you have. doesent mater tho i will be going fishing somewhere cant wait any longer..... whats the go with snapper fishing over there mate do you use over head reels or alveys when boat fishing and whats your biggest.???? got to go now mate me elbows aching brian66
ozdevil
10-07-2002, 06:51 PM
Gday Brian
Mate yep ya got with the word noggun but i thought you would be fimiliar withthe word squire cos a squire is a a young snapper and a chinese fish well thats what i call the whiting mate.....
Matei would have to say my biggest snapper would have to be around the 6kg mark only a baby compared to some of the thumpers that we get here in S.A.....Mate Depends on whats around around mate i usually take a couple of overheads out with me for the bigger Snapper but generally for Squire i would use the eggbeater mate....... what happens when you get onto a snapper the first initial hit is a long fast run and then after that the snapper just give a few head shakes and then generally come to the boat ....
Most people use overheads here but i general go with what i am comfortable with.....i wouldnt even trust the alvey's i own mate cos they need reconditioning as i was given about 10 alveys that are probably over 30 years old now......
Snapper fishing can be quite boring but then ya know all about that from tuna fishing mate.....ya can spend a lot of hours chasing a snapper as ya gotta burley and burley for them at times in certain areas but if they are there mate its just a matter of chucking a pillie down and bang ya on.....but if you want some decent action send out a live tommy mate.........just never use snapper on snapper mate its a big no no.....
Mate i don't have much faith in the predictor myself but they can be right to a point as all it is after al an alamnac.....
anyway gotta go buddy
cheers

gday ozdevil mate this internet fishing is a bit addictive do ya think.its good thou cause the wife doesent want to listen to me rave on about fishing all the time,so this way she dont have to.. mate this time of the year drives me nuts cause the cray season is closed. when the weather sucks and the cray season is open we uasually go diving some where out of the wind.dont know if you have ever had a go at diving but i think if you ever get the chance go for it is a real rush..... i like the sound of this snapper fishing it sounds a bit like bream fishing only better.think when i get these bloody tuna out of my system i will go up to the tamar and have a go at it. i will also have to get back to some basic fishing.there is just some thing about catching big fish that makes me keep going back while missing out on the simple things in life.( jesus listen to me raving on) better go now mate before i make a real .... head out of my self regards brian
ozdevil
11-07-2002, 07:18 PM
Gday Brian
Mate yes it can be a tad addictive specially on days when ya cant get otu for a fish....I have the same kind of problem mate the woman hates me mentioning fishing...So this is a good a place as any to talk about i..... I love hearing whats going on in Tassie mate as ya know i was born and bred there....Its really great being able to talk to some Tasmanians mate seeing thou there is not to many about on the net....
Mate i Reckon you would love the snapper fishing mate i reckon ya should save ya pennys mate get over here at easter time for the whyalla Snapper comp this is when the big Snapper are around but i have never fished that comp yet....like to maybe next year...
Crays mate havent had a cray for years buddy the last time i would ave had a cray would have 1996-7 there abouts....
Mate Diving hey well mate i dont think i will be giving that one a go mate i would love to mate but i am a very bad asthmatic and it may cuase me a few hassles....Plus i wouldnt even go swimming over here in SA at the beaches here bloody white pointer country mate I am yet to see one over here..
I don't know wether yeah heard last year a whale was found dead near cape jervis which is about 150k out of adelaide and there was several white pointers hanging around feeding and this idiot thought what a good stunt stand on the whale with his son on his shoulder with 16 foot whites circling the dead carcass still feeding.....
Mate Snapper fishing its good fun and if ya want mate i will send a Snapper rig over to ya in the way we do it over here...
anyway better go and spend some time with the woman
catchya

hello ozdevil sorry to hear about your asthma mate i hope you are looking after your self.i am a diabetic and shouldnt dive either. but i would say asthma would definitly be to dangerous.mate i do reamember that whale.i heard that the police blew it up in the finish because somebody was going to end up getting eaten. i saw somewhere on the net a photo of a bloke teasing one up out of the water and grabing it by the nose. that would be a bit much excitment for me.we had a bit of a scare a while back a surfing carnival at clifton beach was called off because of a large white pointer. we had been diving for crays 2 days before around the clifton bluff.(dont go there no more).....mate i have got a old fishing mag obout snapper in whyalla.mate i can see what you mean by big snapper.mate it would be intresting to see how you rig for them beacause i have been told they are catching snapper over here as far down as bridport.i am going to do some more looking in to it might ring a couple of the northen tackle shops for info.i havent forgot about the photos i was gunna post you .i still cant work out how to srink em and the wife dont now either it took her ages to send that one of my tuna and it took up the whole bloody screen. i will have to find some one with half a brain to show me how....anyway mate look after your self gotta go now.1 more day to fishing.....brian
ozdevil
12-07-2002, 07:27 PM
Gday Brian
Mate what i here about up north is good reports mate if ya hearing about it now mate i would be thinking of shooting up there very soon....Mate email me ya address and i will send ya over a couple rigs mate.....
Mate Diabetes well mate i heard swimming is good for diabetics mate....Mate i hate having bloody asthma specially this time of year it nearly puts me in hospital each time i have a bloody attack but not to worry mate i still can do normal things.......
Mate Mate mate 3 weeks and i havent managed to get out mate and tommorow gee its not looking good its forcasted golf ball size hail storms after todays effort of a dust storm.....I am really strating to wonder if i can actually get the boat to the boat ramp.... but anyway the boatshow is on this weekend so i will be venturing there prolly on Sunday and hopefully winning a 6 metre brand new whitley with 150 donk on the back of it....bit wishful thinking there but ya can only hope......
I have had some good reports over here that there is some pinkies on the move so i might chase them if i can get out....
Brian also if you wish to send those pic send them to me via email mate and dont wrry about shrinking them unless you really want to...and i will send back to ya in a shrunken format...
Anyway getting back on to the snapper mate a few things put the time in and you will get one.....Mate Really what ya have to do is get a heap of pillies mate prolly a 2 blocks of pillies so that ya can burley up and use for bait Also squid heads and full baby size squid...these would be the best for frozen bait...Now if ya really want to get a decent bugger use live baits prolly a mini marlin or smalllive squid.....
When i am fishing for for snapper as your only allowed the use of 2 rods in the salt over here so while i am waiting for a snapper i usually try for a few whiting....Also look at ya drop offs mate specially around deep holes and gutters and reef formations....
Mate if ya start catching and jimmy hendrixs there could be a few snapper around....
Well i better hit the sack gotta prepare the boat for a 4am start saturday
anyway just call me Mick....
cheers
Mick(ozdevil)

Gday Brian
Mate our boat show was good if you were in the market for a new boat there wasnt many innovations at all they had stands for shoe polishers and even chinese cooking stand....
Mate trout fishing 60 bucks a licence mate....mate there is some very good salt water trout fishing in Tassie mate not far from ya front door
I can remember going out to Bridgewater there and catching a few big sea runners mate which i think are far better then the fresh anyway....
Mate i just got back from a club meeting and mate do i wish i was at port augusta at the moment its firing like all hell......Kingfish up 30kilo a few dolphin fish have been sighted and the surprising thing is a few bonito have appeared.......
As Port Augusta is the start of the gulf and well a way from all the main currents and what ever it just seems bloody strange for these fish to so far up in the gulf.....I can understand why the fish are there...but the strange thing is how did they get there in the first place.....
Mate joining a club can really be a benifit as i am a memeber of ansa and i am about to join up with the sa freshwater association......
Mate i better go as its hard to keep the eyees open

Hi brain66 & ozdevil
I would'nt mind catching up with brain66 and doing a spot of fishing down south when the weather warms some. there are a few members in the Circular Head Sportfishing Club http://www.tassie.net.au/~roblazel/ talking about a trip down south later this year. Any way You Guys have a real thing going here and I loved the blue fin and if you ever come up north Smithton we can go and catch a snapper or 2

gday mick .mate you have had a late one..i now what ya mean about the sea run trout we do some times fish the lower derwent. mate it is getting harder and harder to get a trout because the bream uasuall get to the bait before the trout. not that iv'e got a problem with bream. mate as far fish turning up in strange places i wonder about it also every year we seem to get new species down here also. the snapper seem to be moving further south, there was a report of a snapper being caught in the cremorne area. there were king fish caught as far down as fortescue.and iv'e been told that they are turning up in greater numbers each year.( mate i dont know if ya now or not but we have a comp up north every year called the king fish classic.) why is it so mick. is it because as we have had to travel greater distances in recent years to catch the same fish we used to catch on our door step. the fish also are having trouble finding bait schools and wandering from there asuall path. mate i once saw a big purse seine netter haul tons of mackrel in fortescue they even had a spotter plane. mate i was told latter that the fish were sent to a fish meal factory to be used as cattle feed....surely this cannot be true...mate if so i think that the world has gone mad... and on that note i think it is time to get some sleep..... see for now mate...brian

Gday Brian
Mate fishing for snapper down south in hobart and the surrounds wouldnt surprise me at all mate...the thing is Tasmanians seem to get stuck in setways and are not willing to learn much about whats going on around them.....
If you ever get the chance to chat with Starlo about his video he did.....he actually said to me there would be some great landbased gamefishing down south....I would have to tend to agree with starlo on this the thing is no one is really giving these things ago or if they do and are successful they are not letting the cat out of the bag......
Mate dont ever underestimate the derwent river mate i have a big fascination on fishing The derwent river as i have fished just about every spot you could think of....
Mate catching the sea run trout well there is different methods you can try i have been very successful in the Derwent river right through to kangeroo bluff catching sea run trout......spinning with pretty fish brian is very successful in the derwent...
I would even say there is snapper in the derwent even around tasman island and out around the rock....but the thing is you would have to spend alot of time Searching...
Brian i can remember a few back now i cant remember which boat i was on i think it was the norseman and a freind of mine he never uses bait and we were stopped just for stripeys and he was jigging and ya wouldnt believe it he jigged up a big albacore.... while the trolling was dead...
I have heard of the King fish Classic mate I think Carl hyland has alot to do with the runing of that comp....Another top fish to catch not that i have caught one...
anyway time to hit the sack myself

Gday Blaze
Mate checked out ya website last night pretty good but really needs some stuff placed in it looks pretty bare.......
Mate i dont know wether ya got my instant message or not
Mate i dont know wether ya know my late uncle Peter Brown and his wife Pat who had a farm out at tigari then moved closer to Irish town and philip and russel Kay and Malcom brown.......
Mate ya not calling them snapper in those pics are ya gee mate thats what i would call a squire...there is 3 categories we put snapper into ruggers, squire and then snapper.....mate just the same still good squire....
I actually dont live in Tasmania as i live in South Oz mate.. i used to live in Hobart for 27 years...born and bred in Hobart.....But it is good to catch up on whats happening in Tassie and talking to people back in Tassie.....
Blaze i would be very interested in where abouts and what the bottom is like for these squire mate up that way as Snapper really is an unknown to tassie.....And i maybe able to help improve a few methods for ya in the way we go about it here in S.A

gday mick .today i took some old fish magazines to read at work and what do ya now mate.the first one i opened had a feature about snapper in port pirie.mate it went on to say about artificial reefs made from piles of old car tyres. mate do you fish there ???it also goes on to say that using snapper flesh to catch snapper is a big no no. same goes for using berly to attract them dont use snapper frames.mate it also has some gps co-ordinates of reefs and wrecks.(fishing world march 1997).... mate what a day we have had here today land gale winds gusting to 100 kph. but im getting used to it now.. mick i hope blaze comes back i think i might be able to learn a bit about fishing for these snapper up there.. by the way mate in your post to him you mention photos. (where i couldnt find any.)oh well mick that about does it for tonight..see ya mate have a good weekend ....brian
ozdevil
20-07-2002, 09:57 PM
Gday Brian
Mate Pt Pirie is a couple of hours out of adelaide I havent fished there yet.....There is alot of South Australia i still have to explore and its all takes time...I have been to port Pirie once on my way through to whyalla Just for a poke around mate.....
But artifical reefs do hold Snapper and are very affective..This is one reason Brian i suggested earlier in one of my posts about gps once you have marks you just punch them in follow a highway to the spot and it wil bring you very close to where your spose to be instead of going by land markings all the time.....
Mate I cant wait till they sink the hmas Hobart down at wirrina which is about 70k out of Adelaide and hopefully i cna find out the dates of them sinking her as i wouldnt mind going down and punching in my gps the marks as this will be another place that may hold snapper in time...
Tassie is well behind the times as far as artifical reefs are concerned in my opinion as it is great way to hold a lot of fish.......
Mate it is very true do not use snapper for burley or Bait the quickest way of turning snapper away.... Baits well the best is live bait.... If using bait get Blocks of Pilchards squid Tommy Ruff Whiting heads (Whiting well you will have to buy whole KG Whiting for this one mate and chop the heads of).....
Mate i am still doing up a few rigs(I am not putting Sinkers on Mate becuase of Packaging) i am mixing the hook sizes becuase if they are only ruggers mate then using big hooks can mean you might miss out on a fish...So if ya going to be using say 2 rods you could set up for ruggers and for the bigger fish cos if the fish are only small and you put out 2 baits out for big snapper you then could be in for a big wait...I hope you understand what i am saying there...
Mate Snapper fishing you have to put the hours in and the effort mate... What i mean by this can mean staying out over night to get the results.....Mate when you start going for these snapper mate you will get dissapointed occasionaly as you have put the hard yards in... you just have to prepared to spend money on burley and bait and working towards moon tides and this is going to take time....Mate i am still learning how to snapper fish and I am just lucky i live where i am close to snapper fishing...
Mate I am not saying this to put you off going for a snapper just letting ya know what you will be in for....As time goes by i am more then happy to help ya as you know mate so that you dont have to put the hard yards in and ya can get out and get a fish
Another thing Brian I know ya love ya diving and all that have you thought of upgrading ya tinny to say a half cab or a cuddy mate????
Brian I saw the pics on the website Blaze provided http://www.tassie.net.au/~roblazel/hotspots/robins.html
http://www.tassie.net.au/~roblazel/images/snapper2.jpgI hope ya dont mind me doing that Blaze....
Mate well my fishing has shut down for the next 3 weeks due to family arriving gotta showem around adelaide.....
Mate yeah i know about the wind and all that my folks gave me a call earlier and said it was pretty bad and they are looking forward to there holiday in adelaide......
Mate I am pretty well an unhappy man for the next few months Becuase we have a closed season on Snapper in the spencer gulf which is like the closed season on trout....and then we have another closed season on them in the st vincent gulf....so till the end of the year snapper fishing is pretty well out of the question...
anyway mate i have baffled on a bit tonight and i have prolly put ya off going for snapper now after what i have said......Oh by the way Does the mag tell yell what type of structures and that to look out for other then the artificial ones????
anyway catchya later buddy
cheers

dgay mick... mate it would take a lot more than that to turn me of any form of fishing. for me mick fishing is more than a pastime its more of an obsesion;if im not actually fishing im thinking about fishing.mate i think the more difficult it is the more rewarding it is. the more i listen to advice and methods from you and others the better prepared i can be..i beleive fisherman that are not prepared to listen and learn from other fishos will never be good fisherman....i also think if fishing wasnt so frustrating and still so much to learn i think i would grow tired of it...mate in regards to trading in the dinghy iv'e actually been full circle as far as boats go i started out in a 12ft fiberglass dinghy when i was 17 years old and the rest reads like this:14ft savage alum......15ft half cab pleasure craft.....16ft tas rover...17ft pride cuddy cab... and now back to 4.10 ally craft...mate iv'e just never been able to decide what kind of fisho i really am.at the moment im going through that bigger must be better stage.. when i brought the ally 12 months i had to make a dicission i had a total of $6000.00 and not 1 cent more (wifes words). :( i decided that i should buy new so as to hopefully avoid any of the problems that you sometimes get when buying 2 hand .... mate i dont know if it makes any sence but i thought it did at the time. as you now mick unless you get real lucky you dont get much of a rig for that money and as i take the wife and kids out sometimes i didnt want to risk it..mate its actuly not a bad dive rig either it suprised me. we dont dive with tanks we use a compressor and we have actully had 2 divers come over the side at the same time with no trouble..just dont know mate some days i wish i had an ocean liner and on other days when money is tight i think my self lucky that can go fish with out a huge fuel bill... anyway mate i think iv'e convinced myself...mate the other thing the mag said was to fish the drop offs..mate idont bugger all about gps but it sounds to me like im going to have to in the future. mate i dont know if this means any thing to ya but its gunna be good typing practice so here goes .....port germein communitty wreck.....S33 03 27.E 137 59 80 this structure is large concreate pipes and metal flues.... port pirie community wreck ....S33 05 09. E 137 54 43. ....pyramids of tyres....and the entrance. S33 03 25. E 137 57 90. this is a area where a gutter fedding gemein bay meets with a dredged channel for port pirie shipping and says here it is a schooling area for snapper....mate that was probbibly a lot of usless info but ya never now ay... well mick that will be enought jibberish out of me for on night... look after ya self mate......brian

Gday Brian
Mate I know what ya mean about boats mate...18months ago i brought my boat and i was sitting there just having a bit of think before i brought a boat as i was in 2 minds wether to buy 2nd hand or brand new...With the Money i had i could have brought a boat up to 200,000 dollars so you could imagine what boats i had in mind at the very beginning...but i sat back and said if i brought that Gameboat i would have to live on the dam thing not that it would worry me but then i have to think of my lady and the future...then i thought as seeing thou its my first boat i would only spend a few grand to start of with...anyway as the months drew on i wasnt getting anywhere so i wayed up the options
1 the 200000 dollar craft
2 few grand boat
3 brand new
i chose 3
Reason why i chose 3 was that i was buying my own problems and no one elses.....My boat is a 17 foot seafarer with a 90 on the back of her...
All up my package cost around 34000 time i brought gps and few other bits and pieces.....
Anyway Those marks brian it didnt happen to mention wether they are in wgs84 or agd66 did they as those gps marks will mean nothing if they aint in wgs 84 to me...it could mean that i end up on dry land if i punch them in as is.....
Mate about the gps it may seem i am pushing you about one....i am like you in ways Brian it has taken me 18 months to work my out and still learning about the dam thing....But Mate I wouldnt be with out one now....
You are right mate if your not fishing ya thinking about fishing......Mate i just love talking fishing mate i go on for hours and hours on the subject....
Mate my symptoms are getting bad mate i am starting to shake cos i cant get out there i wish my old man lied fishing as while he is over here i would have taken him out for a fish....
Mate i am actually looking forward to next month heading over to Stansbury which is about the same as it is from hobart to luanceston with my fishing club and it will give my lady a chance to catch up with her mother while i am out chasing the K.G Whiting and a few salmontrout(cockysalmon) and hopefully may find a few snapper....so thats in about 4-6 weeks away yet but looking forward to it already
Anyway i better head to bed as i have to do some chores around the house tommorow...
cheers

gday mick..nice boat mate im impressed.i recon you would have to be pretty happy with that i dont really know what one looks like but it sounds good.... sorry mick i typed out exactly what was printed in the mag and it dont mention anything else like what you said. mate just out of intrest you mention stansbury and the distance is that the closest salt water fishing from where you live ???. mate the reason i ask is iv'e only ever been to melbourne....i was there last year and we hired a car and drove to ballarat thats as far as iv'e been. mate im thinking that i wouldnt like it over there it just seems to take to long to get any where... i dont know what ya recon mick but i think we are pretty lucky over here...anyway mick dont feel to bad about no fishing for 4 weeks... the fish will be 4 weeks bigger when you do get out there.....well mate i bloody well hate mondays so i think i will get a early night so as i might be not be so crabby tommorow... see ya for now mate ......brian

Gday Brian
Mate Stansbury is'nt the closet place to go fishing and it isnt rather that daunting as you can very well be out fishing with in 10 minutes depending on where ya live...It usually takes me 1/2 hour to get to my closet ramp.... Which is St Kilda or Garden Island if i leave from garden island its about a 15 minute run to get to the grounds i fish in adelaide.....or if i go from St kilda it takes only 5 minutes but garden island has the better ramp....
Mate Living here on the mainland is pretty scary at first specially if you dont know where anything is....Mate i couldnt live in melbourne myself but adelaide is just an over grown Tasmania except the weather is hotter......Like in Summer you can go upto 3 weeks straight where its 40 degrees straight and still climbing....
The Fishing is better in the Spencer gulf then in the gulf of St vincent for some silly reason...Alot of people just go for day trips to these places...Take walleroo Probably one of the most popular area's to fish in South Australia is prolly as far as hobart to Eaglehawk Neck away and is in the Spencer gulf....Adelaide is in the gulf of St Vincent just to give you an idea...
Mate Tasmania is pretty well lucky as far fishing goes you don't have to travel in great depths....
The thing what makes things worse on the mainland is Peak hour traffic not so bad here in S.A but can be daunting at times...
anyway i better hit the sack myself as i plan to head out Monday and have a fish while no other bugger is around......
anyway catchya later

gday mick.. mate hope you had a good day fishing...mick thats not as bad as i thought not to far to travel at all. mate you talk about st kilda you might be able to help answer a question.. when we went to melbourne we stayed in st kilda and and although i didnt have a fishing rod i did what any true blooded fisho would do i went straight to the st kilda pier to see what was going on....mate i saw these old timers fishing.... and unless im not mistaken.. with what looked like home made rods (real long) and unless iv'e really lost the plot mate they had no reels on them.... what is going on there mate i couldnt see any thing in there buckets and they didnt catch anything while i was watching ???.... ..mate i suppose you have been to the melbourne aquarium i did i liked it so much mate i had to go back again the next day..... mate im thinking if i ever win tattslotto i will get me a aquarium like that for the lounge room ;D...any way mick hope to hear a good report from todays fishing.....see ya latter mick....... brian

Mate dont ask me anything on St Kilda Melbourne Mate i know nothing about fishing around there you would have to ask one of them mexicans that....
Adelaide also has a st Kilda mate not as good as st kilda in Melbourne.....
Mate i also havent been to Melbourne Aquarium at all i think the last time i was there they hadnt even opened it yet...
Mate I ended up going mate butthe sad story which i thought would be the case is the bloodworms are still about and the fish are filled up on them which meant my bait was no good for them...I did try a few metal lures out the back for a few salmon and a kingfish but no luck mate i was only out there for a 2-3 hours...Saw heaps of dolphins around the Port river and out around the gulf.....
anyway mate the fishing for me is dead for a couple of weeks the family is over visiting
anyway i better get an early one as i have a lot to do

Mate i was expecting big things myself when i was out the other day but the main oblective was to get the boat out as its not going to get run for the next couple of weeks....
Mate My old man doesnt have the patients for fishing and he never has i actually don't know how i stumbled accross fishing...I think it was a time when a mate asked me to go fishing with him when the Hobart had the big snotty travelly runs off the hobart wharfs from then on i taught myself how to fish took myself fishing...I wouldnt Put my dad through a days fishin just becuase i know its not for him...but he loves eating fish

I have to agree with ya mate its only a short run about 5k out to the Hypolites from Fortesque Bay........
Blaze it is about 20k from Pirates bay.......
Brian Just out of interest as everyone always seems to head south when leaving pirates Bay i Think there could be some good fishing headig up towards maria island what do you think?????
Brian how do ya go with the tiller steer when trolling for blues wouldnt it make it hard to control the boat and try to get the fish to boat as well???
Brian have seen boats your size around Tasman I think they are real fools heading down to tasman in a small tinnie i wouldnt even think of heading down that way in anything less then a 17 footer just for safety wise as its a long haul back from tasman to fortesque bay... I think really anyone with sense in open tinny's like yours brian should really only hang around The hypolites....as if it does get up its only a short run back.....Brian cos ya dead right you have to pick ya weather in a small craft....I would hate to be in trouble out there and knowing i cant get on land for another 20 odd k.....
Mate have you done any good diving out of fortesque and all that or is to dangerous around fortesque for ya diving as i believe there is a good shipwreck out around these parts somewhere but i am not sure....
anyway better go catchya later mate

gday jaybee hows it going...mate a fish is a fish and they tell me that whiting are one of the best when it comes to eating.. bream are also a good fish we catch a lot of them down here around hobart. tough buggers on light line...mate i dont think any of us that have ever fished could turn our back on fishing for ever; it is far to addictive for that.. the more i get the more i want..i have fished since i was old enought to hold a rod and i just love it... yet i know a lot of people i have tried to introduce to the sport who just cant see what all the fuss is about..i call them the non beleivers......anyway mate thanks for your reply...maybe we will talk again soon...... brian

Hi Brain & Mick
I have a 4.1 pride runabout with a 25 merc (about to get a 40 yamaha)
and I dont go far from land here but do a lot of island hopping perkins, robins, hunters, three hummocks ect and you can aways be within a couple a k of shore. You will have to bring the tinny up brain Feb to march and see if we can get a snapper.they also catch a few around the batman bridge in launceston real bloody early in the morning. if you see any thing written by damen sherriff read that, he is supossed to be the snapper guru in tassie.About 15 years ago I went fishing with a mate from dunally, left through the narrows up toward maria island chasing tuna trolled all day (no Tuna) slowed down and caught a heap off great bloody couta

gday mick how are ya tonight.. mate i think you could be right about turning left instead of right... a mate of mine did just that last year berlyin sharks..he caught 2 blue shark and one mako out off the sisters rock.( ya got me thinking now.) mate as far as the problem of the tiller steering goes; sometimes if i could put a pole up in the middle of the boat; all i would need is a canvas and i would have me a real live circus. last time i switched the motor of and chased it all around the boat till i got it on the double.. but im learning a bit about boat handeling from my mate iv;e been going with lately. he is pretty well switched on as far as that goes...mick diving fortescue ; mate i think i have probibly had my head under every rock in that bay.. there are not many size crays there anymore; but with a bit of effort i can uasually get my bag and a nice feed of abs... mate the only wrecks i have dived there is a old kelp cutter in the bay there is not much to see though.. the only other wrecks i now of are in a 100 plus meters of water...thats to deeeep for me mate.....as far as the bay goes it is one of the safest dives in tassie in my opinion. howerer mate the water is always so clear and blue i sometimes get the jitters there is some biiiiig bitties out ther further..but mate i beleive that you would never see the one what really wanted to eat you.. it would happen when you was least expecting it.. so i dont bother looking for em any more....any way mate gotta go for now see ya latter...... brian

Gday Brian
Mate its good i have ya thinking becuase really up heading toward the three sisters and maria really opens up a new area for small craft....I have fished up there once on The hallams boat many many years ago this was when Ash hallam was still around the area...I also think up around this area by memory might be a good spot for land based game fishing as well specially around the tesalated pavements......
I have heard from a few people that the odd occasion there is bluefin popping there nose in pirates bay.........The blowhole on the other side of it off course i think can be a very good place to live bait......
Steve Starling pointed something out to me in what he has sussed out of the area when he was fishing for bluefin down there back in 1993 i think that as you just come out of fortesque there is a nice ledge that would produce good tuna......I also believe that he may be right...this all land based gamefishing Brian i am talking about.....
Mate ya prolly right about the crays as it is a popular place around fortesque to fish and camp everyman and his dog has prolly fished out all the good crays.....
Mate if i get to come over for next years tuna season we will have to get together and try some of these locations out for for the bluefin.....
Gday Rob
Sounds like ya have a nice little boat setup there......Island hopping mate these island i reckon would hold some good fishing Spots i have never fished the islands up around your way and i think they are not much talked about really.....
Rob whats the chances of getting a few albacore or the odd bluefin up around your way.....I think gamefishing is very underated in the north and nor west regions....I have heard from some people from burnie saying they have caught some albacore... i dont know how true this is......But i think there is great possibilities.......
I don't know if it is possible but if ya can get a oat around Marrawah area i think this could be a great place for gamefishing...But i can See where the problem arises as there is no shelter for boats if it turns nasty...
anyway cheers

gday mick.. yep you heard right last year the blues were caught within 5 min of the boat ramp at eagle hawk neck..and the odd yellow fin did the same the year before..mate if you can ever get down here i wouldn;t worry to much about rock hoppin. i will organize a trip on the big pig...the skippers name is stuart nichols and he is the new guru of tuna fishin down here.. mate i dont know why but that boat is a real fish magnet....mate im not not saying that rock hoppin is out of the question as it could be done. i just worry about all that walking..they reckon its good for ya but i dont know. ;D mate i got a map out tonight to check out s/a and i now where all the fish are over there looks to me like they would be hanging around cape du couedic just behind kangaroo island... what do ya recon about that mate. or is it to far out. it dont look very far on the map ???any way mate hope you had a bit of luck talking your dad into going fishin... ps... mate if i can get the weather right i will go to the sisters next sat..see ya latter mate.... brian

Hi Brian n Oz..how way ya weekend. did you get any fishing in ? Mooloolaba was blown out early today so come home a few hours ahead of time. we fished from 1pm to 8pm friday night and 11am to 5pm saturday. Not many fish caught by the boats out there. Every fish that come over the side went back just as quick ;D red emperer, squire, parrot, maori cod, spangled emperer and wrasse. I think we need heaps of rain up here to get the shallow reefs firing. The sea was very sloppy with variable 10 to 15 knot winds which didnt help either. but it was good to be back on the water and away from suburbia.
cheers.

gday mick / jaybee no fishing this weekend either.. it will be on next weekend tho.. i went to the tuna club dinner / trophy night last night and meet some real nice people, and had areal good night.... one thing of intrest was a prize for capture of a blue fin which had been tagged in w/a by the c.s.i r.o over there...it ended up down here in tassie and the bloke who caught it was rewarded $200.00 for returning the tag to c.s.i.r.o (what a bargain)..... brian

gday mick welcome back... hope you enjoyed your time with the folks..mate i had a great day on sat my mate daniel and i went down to tasman island and got some striped trumpeter.. they were pretty hard to find without a sounder so we only managed 4 all up.. the biggest was 5kg caught by me.. the others were around the 3-4 kg mark..i caught my 2 down at tasman..on the way back to fortescue we stopped in behind the lanterns and in only 50 mts of water my mate caught the other 2 plus we got a nice few morwong..mate even though we caught them on hand lines i was pretty happy about the whole day.. especially now i know that i can target them out of my boat..(no need to go to tasman)..i am going to go down again this sat and this time were gunna try using the rods in shallower water...mate i will thank your dad for the rigs if i see him... but if i miss him thank him for me will ya... anyway mick nice to chat to you again and hope you can get a bit of fishing in soon mate...... see ya for now mate..... brian

Mate i have a bit of news to tell ya....Mate i could be over at chrissy time So we may have to catch up and have a fish asMy father has promised me a free trip over on his frequent flyers.....which i am also still thinking of coming over in april as well to do some tuna fishing...
Mate at this stage i am planning a trip out this thursday as i am very very eager to get the boat out and the following week i am prolly heading over to stansbury with my fishing club.......
Mate the rigs i have given you will need sinkers and the next ones that will send over will be done a tiny bit different to the ones i sent but still the similar.....as the top hook will be able to slide...
Mate The weather today wasnt bad but as i am sitting here the wind is howling in.....but that will be good as it will bring the whiting in..
Brian funny you say the Lanterns ..I know there is a rather big Bluefin that likes to get in a ledge around there as i know a guy i used to fish with Alby Sutcliffe lost a big blue around that area.... I know there has been some good hook ups in between the lanterns and fortesque on high tide...
anyway its good to hear from ya once again and its great to be back.....

gday mick... great stuff mate i hope you do come over at xmas and we will definatly go fishing might even throw the dive gear in and get ya a feed of crays, as the season opens nov 1. the albacore might even be on the move by then...iv,e been thinking about those rigs you are sending me. from what ive read about snapper they seem to like the same sort of areas as trumpeter..(do you think the same style of rig would apply)... mate i forgot to tell you last night....when we were down at tasman sat a couple of blokes pulled up along side us and asked if we had done any good..... mate i had just caught my bigest stripie ever so i thought i show these blokes, so i stuck the chest out and proudly held up my fish 8) that was alright till they heaved 2 giant trumpeter of the deck uf ther boat.... mate these 2 fish without exagerating would have been atleast 1 meter long a perfect matching pair i estimate 15-20 kg. :o that has really got me going mate i have just got to have me a fish like that..... mate sounds like a great day coming up for you going out with your club..is it a tornament or just a day of fun ???were in for a windy few days down here in tas hope it blows itself out by the weekend... mate i have got a weeks holiday on the 9th of september cant wait for that one either...anyway mate i just done that bloody IQ test on tv and it confirmed to me that yes i am an idiot :-[... anyway mate better go for now......brian...ps hope you can get over at xmas i will probibly talk ya ears of thou got heaps i would like to ask you about...

Gday Brian
Mate i metre long stripies mate thats would have to be huge as there isnt to many of them around these days i think...Mate even 5kg stripie is pretty good in my book mind you i think i would release a 20kg stripey as i think a couple of stripies will do the dinner plate...
Mate I think you are on the right track as far as structure is concerned for snapper...Mate i would quitely try and fish for for them around Tasman and the lanterns and prolly around the rock mate....but i would first sound around to see if you have any good drop offs or ledges that are prominent....and drift over the ledges like ya do for stripies if it is possible around the lanterns is to prolly anchor send down a burley bomb and put a few squid heads or pillies down to the bottom and have a few around the middle and a unweighted rig and just let the current do its work...Mate i think this would bethe way to go we may just have to have a shot at these around chrissy time thats if i do get to come over...
Mate i cant weight till thursday hopefully if the weather calms down here i will be definitely be heading out...I will be chasing King george chinese fish and i may even try for a shark like a bronzie or a hammer....
as i will be taking out a new guy out on thursday and he has told me he hates shark but little does he know that i am going to put a couple of rods over the side for a toothy.....and he is going to be the gaffman....hell i am cruel..... anywway all in all it should be a good day out....
Mate when i head over to stansbury to fish with the club it will be tournement between the club....i am actually looking forward to it as it will be my first comp in 3-4years as i have only just rejoined the club.....so looking forward to get a bit more serious ...
Mate if i dont get over at christmas time and if thwe lovely lady of mine agrees we will definately be over in april sometime and i will pack my gamerods up and if the funds are there i will be bringing my boat.
anyway mate i better go and i will talk to ya later...
cheers

Did my father drop those rigs off to ya
brian66
08-08-2002, 05:40 PM
gday mick... mate i got those rigs today thanks.. i think if im right the 2 hook setup would be for whole fish baits and the single ones would be used with a running sinker..but im only guessing...nice bit of snell work to mate,i have never tried to tie on of them look neat though...the wife must have been at work when ya dad dropped them of so tell him thanks for me willya...mate hows the weather looking for you trip tomorrow the wind is really having a go down here there is even a land gale warning...mick its up to you if you want to bring your boat down go for it, but im sure i can arrange a trip on a charter boat or my mates boat, its still not as big as yours (15ft midnight) but its been back from tasman in some big water heaps of times...then there is always my punt usually good enough on the right day...having said that the missus dad has just booked himself and his van on the new and it only cost him $100.00 one way... a charter would cost between $600 and $800 but i could rope a few mates in to share the cost of a trip... any way mate something to think about.... thanks again mick for the rigs i will get you to tell me abit about how to fish them not all in one post if ya dont want to though, as i,ve noticed trying to explain things in type can be a long process..took some more photos on sat of the stripies but havent finished the film yet i will email ya when i finish the film.its one of them desposible under water ones so there might even be some action shots on it cant remember.. mate i read that you can catch the same trumpeter over your way but there regarded as a nuisance fish over there.. what the hell is going on there mate it doesnt say why in the mag... ...any way mate i've been raving on like a lunatic so if you dont get time to answer all my stupid questions doesent mater ... i got abit carried away see ya for now mate......... brian
ozdevil
08-08-2002, 07:38 PM
Gday Brian
Mate first off mate i tell ya how it is ya not raving on like a bluudy lunatic ya not asking to many stupid questions also mate if ya don't ask question ya dont get answers and i will always try to answer ya questions as the best i can mate of the best knowledge i have.
Brian both types of rigs you can use with whole fish or squid....Mind you the rigs in the packets will need sinkers attached to them....The other rigs yes they can be used in conjuction with running rig or you could possibly use it as a paternoster rig (flattie rig).....Mate thanks for the compliments on my snell knots mate any knot i do i try to make perfect as i can.....
Mate at the moment i am only toying with the idea of bring the boat over and if i was to bring the boat over i would need a companion to fish with which if i did i was kind of hoping it would be yourself as i think both of us have alot in common as far as fishing goes...But if i dont bring the boat over which i am seriously just thinking of driving over with just a car...So i will be wanting either a charter which would only mean 1 day out which meansless fishing....if i took you up on ya mates or your own boat would mean a few days out meaning more fishing time.......Which at the moment i am really thinking of leaving the boat at home and taking you up on your offer.....
Mate you did read correct about the Stripe trumpeter over here and they are everywhere in the gulf which we call shitties here...I believe after catching a few of these stripeies are not the tasmanian Striped trumpeter which they are very similar but we use theses stripies for mullaway bait believe it or not......
mate it is looking very good for my trip out tommorow i am very eager to get out i spent most of the day today preparing the boat checking if everything is fine and all working and gave it a bit of a spring clean.....but mate i wish the snapper season was still on as i would love to be out chasing them....but the king george should be about and i am hoping it doesn't come in to bad or i might find meself chasing a jewie or some bream....
Mate i will thank my dad for dropping them off for you...... Mate these next riggs i am going to make up for you will be bit different as there will be a bit of binding work on the hooks which will make the hook slide....
anyway mate i better hit the sack early start on the water talk to ya soon...

09-08-2002, 05:47 PM
gday mick.. i think you would be better of just bringing the car over for sure... when the time comes we should get each phone numbers and get a plan of attack.. i will do some ringing around and organize the charter and phone some mates..(keen fishos only).and depending on what fish are on the go at the moment. i will organize it around what is the best value...mate i think we might have a lot of things in common.the most important one being fishing..mick i dont now much about you.. but i dont really have to cause im the sort of bloke who nows a lot of people... but i could count my real freinds on one hand...the others who i dont count as real friends, some are finacialy well off... some like me are just battlers..but if any of them start talking fishing they are welcome to fish with me any time..does that make sense.(hard to explain in writing)..any way mate got a bit side tracked there..how did you go today ???...our weather is not looking to great for the weekend i think our trip will have to be canned..mate i just had a thought if you would like to give me a mailing address i will get the wife to photo copy you last years tas fishing reports.i have got them in a folder and they are dated...last years reports have almost been the same as this years.. except we had a extended tuna season..i just thought it might keep you in touch with whats going on down here.and i will send you a couple of new ones as they report them..(john taylor and neil grose).although neil is a bit obsessed with trout fishing of late..its up to you mate it might be of help in planning a trip over timing wize.....any way mate i wont be long out of bed so i will catch ya latter.........brian

Gday Brian
Mate my fishing trip i prolly would have been better to fish in the toilet would have been far productive mind you we did manage 1 snapper but that was undersize and no bigger then the palm of ya hand....But all in all it was a very enjoyable day out on the water and was good to give the boat a decent run i might head out over the weekend if it doesnt come in bad but its forcasted to.....
Mate i was actually giving it alot of thought mate to wether i am going to bring the boat over or not i have actually decided not to mate.....
Mate i have to agree with ya you we dont really know each other that well at all part from chatting on the net...
Mate i have no probs of giving you my home address as long as ya don't jump on the next plane and kill me lol as i would be very interested in reading what squizzy has been writing about and neil grose has to but i can understand why neil is writes more on trout as that is what he specialises in....
Mate i have rough ideas when the tuna season is and thats what i will be solely coming over for in april as i feel around april is prolly one of the most stable months for the tuna....So what i will do is have a word with my lady over the next week or so about the trip and about charter which shouldnt be a problem.....and we willgo from there then...
Mate i would be willing to go 200 bucks a day on a charter if there is only 4 of us mate which means we will be able to fish all day if the charters are still around 800 bucks a day......whats your views there mate as i think fishing like 10-12 people for the day is to crowded and ya get less fishing.....
I get a bit slack when theres rain around and wind aroud but When i was over in Tas living i always found a spot to fish wether it would be open sea or a quite river there is always an option to get out for a fish unless the gods send a hurricane or tornado through..
Mate while i was out fishing today there was some characters out there in the other boats...1 boat beside us thought he would move and decided to move with the anchor still planted in the reef...another guy thought he would literally park his boat on another boat forcing them to move spots....Mate somedays when ya fishing in South oz its like peak hour on the brooker hwy mate ya can literally jump in the next boat in 4 directions and i aint joking..... if ya wanna get out ya wanna hope the next guy ups and leaves before you do......I will have to take the camera out one day and send ya pic of one of the areas i fish with all these boats surrounding me....
I turned up to the outer grange tyre reef today the only boat there next minute i looks around and theres about a dozen boats coming my way.....i go find a spot on me own and i seem to attract other boaties.....i move to another spot next minute theres boats around me...i dunno what it is but i attractem around maybe is my good looks.....but i just wish i could break my fish drought....
anyway mate i have prattled on a bit tonight so i will talk to ya later mate
Also i sent you an instant message mate with my home address

10-08-2002, 06:51 PM
gday mick.. your right when you say 10-12 people is to many..i organized a tuna trip a few years ago and took 10.. and it was way to crowded.. i am in the process of chasing up a few leads,i've been told of a bloke from new norfolk who does charters for $80 dollars a head maximum of 4 people.. but i dont know what to think about that one.. i know the boat and its a nice boat but sounds to cheap to me.. i will do some looking in to it thou... another boat i heard of today charges $700 and has a good reputation..we have got plenty of time so i wont rush into any thing.. when i send you those reports you will notice that the blues got bigger towards the end of the season..they did the same this year also, something else to think about thats not to say april wouldnt be allright....mate that must be so frustrating having boats fishing fishing so close to you all the time.. if some one did that down hear it would be unheard of..i have spent many hours on the water and i can never ever remember anyone doing it to me.... bad luck about your tip mate.. but a bad days fishing is better than no fishing at all..i know what your saying about allways being somewhere to get out of the wind down here mate its just that i;ve give the trout a big miss this year, and all the sheltered places i;ve fished in salt lately have been very disapointing.. plus i;ve got these bloody trumpeter in my brain lately and i just dont think a 30cm flathead is going to do it for me..there predicted a 30-40 north westly for tommorow so i will just have to wait till next weekend although i have got a sick day worked up now it wont do me any good cause unless i go solo every one i go fish with will be at work..mick i got no problem paying $200 a day for a charter either i will just have to find 2 others willing to pay that much.. anyway mate like i say we got plenty of time... ..better go for now mate hope you get in amongst some good fish tommorow.....see ya....... brian

Mate that charter ya saying 80 bucks minium being 4 people it just dont sound right to me...Mate i am very fimiliar with the Norseman i have fished of gerald spaldings boat a few times in the past and he has a brilliant deckie mate...
As you say we have plenty of time and when you send these reports over to me i will have a bit of a good read so i can plan the trip to when i think there quite a few around.....
Mate fishing close can have its advantages but mate ya pretty right if it was done in tassie there would be a few boaties worried.....Mate its a bloody sight to see and mind you this was in the middle of week with boats everywhere just imagine whats like on a saturday.....
Mate i prolly wont be heading out this weekend now as i am going to do some work around the house that i have been neglecting since the folks have been over and a day out fishing yesterday....I may still get out but i want to get the work done first.....
Mate it would be good just 4 people fishing as it will all mean we can fish all day with out hassle of sharing a rod.....it will be hard to find 2 other people maybe we should ask blaze if he would be interested what do you reckon???
Mate trumpeter to flathead mate i think i would rather a trumpeter mate...but mate dont just sit there and think flathead or trout what about elephant fish i know they are caught in the derwent and in very sheltered area i know still not the same as a stripey....arrrgh it will give ya chance to spend some time with the family mate.....
anyway i better go so i will catchya later mate

Mate thats fine with me have a bit of a chat around see what that guy thinks and what he suggest ya never know mate what may come out of it all.....
Mate my father rang today and he was wondering wether you got those hooks i sent ya i told him yes and ya said thanks.....
Mate i did a bit of window shopping today for pfds as my pfds make very unconfortable not that we have to wear pfds here in South Oz..but i am looking at the stormy seas jackets and one bloke quoted me over here 460 odd bucks which does sound right for the particular jacket i want as it has the zip of sleeves.....My father is checking out the prices from the factory and wether he can a second from there.....
Mate i did end up going fishing for awhile with my lady it was only for bream and we managed nothing not even a bite but we had fun which is the main thing....
Mate looking after the young ones while the wife plays...well i spose it is only fair she gets a night out for the amout of fishing trips you have had.....
Mate also i have had a chat with my darling fiancee and she doesnt mind me paying upto 200 bucks a day....
I now have to talk her into taking the new spirit accross but she doesnt like the sleep over in the seats thing.....
Mate what i have been told about the new boats that are running accross look like bueaties mate......
Mate i am hoping to get out in the boat again on Wednesday but nothing is for certain as my mate may have to take his father into hospital....
anyway i better hit the sack gotta catch up with the chores tommorow seeing i didnt do them today

Mate 6-7 weeks before the snapper come in heck mate we are in closed season at the mo for snapper 3 weeks closure not enuff in my book but thats the way our fishery works over in South Australia...Arrrgh well look forward to chasing them next month myself.....Mate when ya out chasing these Snapper mate look for some good structure thats arounds and try a few baits like whole squid squid heads pillies....Mate if ya can get hold of some live bait try and use tommys maybe a slimey mackeral...
Also when fishing for the Knuckles mate dont use snapper as berley or bait you will soon turn the snapper of....a good day after the buggers is when ya got a small choppy water....You dont want it to calm.....Also try to experiment a bit have a bait on the bottom one about middle and a non weighted bait becuase most of the big knuckles will be about mid to top go below the mid ya start finding alot of ruggars and squire....
i hope i have helped ya bit here blaze and hopefully it will get you a knuckle ya never seen before......
Also try and use braid as ya main line as you wil increase ya chances of bring a big knuckle to the boat.....
anyway better go and do some work around the house.... good luck with the fishing blaze in the up coming weeks as it sounds like ya gunna be busy castching knuckles and sea runners

gday mick... mate strange you mention the new spirit of tas, i went and had a look at it today as it is down at the wharfe here in hobart, and it was open to the public.. so i took the wife and kids aboard mate it is massive :o .... mate the wife has a sister that lives in melbourne and she really hates flying she is now talking about booking a trip over on it to see here sister and we would be taking our car over cause its fee for cars in the off peak...mate i had a real brain wave today i dont know when this is going to take place but maybe we could get a plan and catch up for a days fishing or yaking... mate how long does it take to drive from melb to adelaide. ??? if it takes to long maybe we could met half way just a thought...i got a price list off the boat today so i will send it with that other stuff.. it costs $100 one way per adult and like i said the cars free.. and also there is going to be day sailings from the end of jan to the end of april weekends only, but it tells you all about it in the price list im sending.. so mate you wouldnt need a cabin as it only takes about 10 hours to do the run across... (might be abit fast for trolling thou and i couldnt find any rod holders on the stern ;D).....mate those stormy seas jakets sure are nice. i was going to get me one when i brought the ally but the missus said that the kids had grown out of there old ones... so that was the end of that.. i decided to buy 5 pfd instead for the same price as 1 stormy seas.. still would like one though..there is a lot of other toys i would like before i buy one. the pfd i brought are not to bad to wear, they are suprisingly comfy..as you now mick it is compulsory to wear them down here... i hated the idea of it at first and thought it was big brother type stuff trying to take away my personal freedom of choice..but now i think it is probbibly not so bad cause if it saves one life because i and others set an example by wearing one then it is a good thing.... there are still a few cowboys not wearing them.. but if they drown its there business as long as its only them that drowns and not some poor bugger out looking for them so be it...any way mick enough out of me tonight talk to you again soon mate..... brian

gday blaze.. mate that sounds great i just was telling the wife and she said if we had a bit of spare money at the time we could probibly come up and stay there some where for the weekend.. so i could spend a day fishing with you.. and spend the other with her and the kids..mate im real keen on having a bit of a go at those snapper.. but i understand that they are real hard to catch so i wont be expecting to much.. just a day fishing some where i've never been before will do me.. thanks for the report mate we will have to keep in touch..ps i am still keeping my ears and eyes open down here for that other thing we talked about....thanks again mate....brian

Gday Brian
Mate my Parents said they were going for a look over the boats but i they wouldnt have given it a thought on getting any broucheres mate....Mate i look forward to the stuff ya sending mate specially the spirit stuff.....
Mate i know its cheap anyone can really afford to come across the straight now that they have a relaxed there prices on cars....
Mate if and when you decide to come over to the mainland for a holiday mate to get to adelaide in the quickest possible time would be an 8 hour drive which it isnt to bad i have done the drive a few times and the 8 hours is allowing for toilet break and food stops mate....if ya come across to adelaide mate your accomadation is free.....
Mate my life jackets are pretty new ones but really they dont fit me that well as i am not a small lad rather got a big build...but i am going for the stormy seas jackets becuase i think they are very easy worn they dont hinder you while fishing and the safety is all there ready when ya hit the water...As i see things Brian ya just cant put a price on safety Specially in the gulf waters mate when it chops up out there its not single waves its double wave action very similar to what ya see on the lakes as the gulf is shallow water and is allowing the wind to give a bit of turbulance in the water....
Mate i never did get the chores around the house this weekend as i had a mate ring me up and said do i wanna go and try for some trout so i had to say yes..anyway i ended up with a bit of a mixture 2 trout 1 rainbow and 1 brown.... all in all i managed to get out fishing 2 days in a row...
anyway enuff of my prattle talk to ya soon mate

gday mick.. mate i know what you mean about shallow water wind and waves...i remember a trip to lake pedder years ago and got caught out in the middle in a 13ft dinghy in a 40 knot wind.... mate i dont think i have ever been so worried the waves were shorter and sharper than i ever imagined a lake could get...mate is good that you got to go after some trout, sounds like you had a good day...i keep looking at the trout rods standing in the corner and wonder why i dont go and get a licence.. mate i used to love my trout fishing..but i know if i get one it will be a waste of money cause i brought one last year and used it 4 times then when the weather warmed up i headed of to the salt, spending most weekends diving until the albacore and yellow fin turned up.. then the blues turned up and i just never got around to going trout fishing.. any way mate i dont know if you have heard or not but we have a great bream fishery now down here in the derwent.. they are almost in plage proportion and there is some big ones in amongst them..i dont know what you think mate but give me a bream any day as far as a sport fish goes there a lot tougher than trout and atleast you can eat them unlike trout mate i just cant come at them for eating.. so i might get in to them soon instead... that way mate i can still use the trout gear and when its to rough for proper fishing i wont be so bored on the weekends..mate the missus didnt get time at her work today to do that stuff for you, but said she would do it tommorow... any way mick i had some visitors tonight so im running a bit behind and its just about snowing outside would you beleive so im hopeing i wont get to work tommorow but i still better make some lunch just incase.... so better go for now mate.....brian

Gday Brian
The days of Pedder mate i have heard recently this lake has been firing once again but not like the good old days that have gone.....
Mate the trout over here isnt that crash hot mate all it is pan size fish not that i mind as i release most of my trout that i catch here in South Oz...Mate the only real trout i eat is the sea run trout mate as they have a salty taste to them instead of a muddy taste but i know what ya mean about the trout and bream
Mate Bream fishing was one of the fish i was brought up on over in Tas....I can Remember heading up to little swanport just out of Triabunna mate what great Spot that was some real great bream out of there but in my recent years before i moved here to south oz i was doing alot of bream fishing and mate As i have always said the Derwent is very under estimated people just think its real polutted no fish but mate i sure in the hell can tell ya the derwent has cleaned up over the years specially since they stopped the jarisite removal from the Zinc Works....
Mate The bream fishing in Tas ha been going strong for the last8 years mate I have fished the Jorden derwent as far as the cottage just before ya get to the speedway....Mate Some good Spots i have fished for bream in The derwent would be around east risdon where the old punts used to go when the tasman was down the baily bridge spit otago bay but My favorite in the derwent would have to be Jorden River Also Browns river down Kingston Mate can hold some good bream.....
Mate Bream fishing is great fun the sport from these fish is just brilliant and they are just about in every state around Australia....
South Australia would have to be the unlucky state as far as the bream goes as the average bream here would be around 400 grams just on legal size with just the odd one above a kilo but not very often
Mate when ever ya wife gets the chance to do it work will be fine with me mate....
Oh by the way i still never recieved the proper email that you tried sending me mate.......
Mate i better go as well as its getting late here and i am finding it hard to keep the eyes open.....
cheers

gday mick.. sorry about the email mate i was trying to send you some things i scanned out of a magazine news paper type thing i dont think you would have heard of it...its called tas fishing and boating news... any way mate i couldnt send it for some reason..(bloody computer or the idiot driving it dont know)... it was an article on a run of big blues caught on the big pig..any way mate im going to send it with the rest of the stuff so i wont tell the story now... mate your right about lake pedder they do catch fish but mate there not worth the drive in my opinion... there only small not like they used to be... mate i dont know if you ever fished it when the fish cakes were all the rage.. mate i can remember going up there with dad an we were there no more than an hour using fish cakes and i caught my biggest trout to this day it nailed that fish cake at my feet 11 and half pounds of the shortest fatest trout you ever seen in your life... 20 min later dad landed one 13 pounds all this like i say mate in the space of an hour.. thats what i call trout fishing..last time i fished pedder about 5 year ago the bigest we managed was 1 pound.. any way mate no good living in ther past...mate i used to work at e.z and your right mate they have cleaned up there act a fair bit still not perfect but i dont think it could ever be considering the sort of chemicals and metals there dealing with there.. mate i have fished the jordon many times myself and caught many nice bream and trout from there ... one place you didnt meantion mate was the old train station area opposite the old granton pub that is my personal favorite...we have caught lots of big bream and trout from ther over the years...mate i have been taking some old issues of those tas fish news i was telling you about to work.. today mate i was reading about a bloke that blaze mentioned a while back a snapper guru by the name of damon sherriff telling of a pair of snapper he caught in the tamar area one weighting 21lb and the other 24lb compleat with photos.. mate this story is great stuff i will send that one to ya as well... mate the wife told me today that here work ran out of photo paper.. i think mate that she may be mucking me around cause yesterday she said that didnt get time so im gunna have to sack her and get a new secratary...(not to mention the ausfish stickers i told here i wanted 2 weeeeeks ago and still havent got... mate i would go and do all this sort of stuff my self but i go to work about 5 oclock and dont get home till about 6 so it mackes it a bit hard.. any way mate we will get there eventully. any way mate enought of my ravings for one night, look after yourself mate..... till next time mate ......brian

Mate I hardly fished peddar but have read history and spoken to alot of people about pedder but ya right mate thats the past and we will never see things like the pedders days..
Mate I used to fish for my sea run trout at the the train station bride and along the shores there lost many of good fish there and picked up alot of good fish from there I was like a local there when it was sea run trout time...theres a guy who regular visits the area he is known by skippy and i tell ya what he knows that area of the back of his hand....
Mate Also along the banks where mandy carter was murdered ya also pick up some good bream and trout.....
Mate about this stuff ya going to send mate anytime just when you guys get the time to do it is fine with me.....

Mate i am looking forward to seeing all this info mate it should keep me busy for a few weeks reading all this info mate...
Mate if ya looking at buying any chemically sharpened hook i suggest you get yaself some gamagatsu circle hooks i reckon Steve Bax should have them in Stock.....
Mate i resume your strictly going after the stripies mate are you going to give a bit of a troll around for the odd blue i know the tuna seasons over and done with but i know a bloke who actaully caught a blue around october time this was going back a few years ago.....
Mate i should have been out in the boat today but couldnt find that extra bloody person to go out with but i should have went out on me own as i reckon i would have had a ball as there was 2 whales making love of Henely Beach which is not far from Glenelg mate....
Mate i reckon i should be heading out this weekend i am tossing up wether to go for whiting or tossing up wether to go and catch mothery in the port river on Saturday night i have to toss that one up with me mate see what he thinks.....

gday mick..mate i will keep an eye out for those hooks next time i have already got some today..(youvella..6/0)..they look like they will be a good hook anyway.....mick i dont think there would be a hope in hell of a blue fin the water has gone from blue to real green not a good sign usually... but mate i allways take the shimano when i go down that way as you now, you never no what your gunna bump into out there...mate i think it was you who mentioned berly bombs...any way mate i have talked and thought long about this subject... i worry about using berly down in the fortescue area..... as you now mate the current can be so strong out there would it not carry the berly away from the boat to quickly and the fish with it. ???any way mate we will be down there sat morning and if we do as good as we did last time i will be happy...mate those whales it must be that time of the year because i was listining to jhon laws the other week as i do every weekday, and he was saying there was whales under the sydney hourbour bridge....mate you have got me good with that mothery fish you better tell me a bit about that one mate...anyway mate good talking to you as usual...11 pages mate who would have thought aye.......... brian

Gday Brian
MAte berly bombs i may have mentioned it mate very effective mate i use them over here and if fred is about ya know there is a snapper about lirking the water as Snapper is a freds favorite feed...... Mate using berley bombs around the coast of Tassie will be fine i wouldnt suggest to do it in your tinny but if ya in ya mates boat ya should be pretty Well fine as the berley will move with the current and will move quick you would prolly be surprised how fast the current runs out there in the tasman..mate i would use berley around lanterns area just to see what happens....
Mate a mothery mate is the god fish of Port Adelaide a jewfish or mullaway...Sorry i should use these strange terms us South ozzies use....
I spose really with the water being as green as ya say there prolly is little chance of getting a blue.....
Mate 11 pages is pretty good i think we hold some kind of record for ausfish as far as the amount of posts we have made....
Not many have entered our converstaions but they most likey got lost trying to understand our lingo....
Mate anyway great chatting with you mate its good waiting for the anticipation of what you are gonna reply with next as we always finbd something to chat about you would think we would be all chatted out by now....but we are like the energiser bunnies....I reckon the others in the forums are wondering how much longer can we bullshit for....

Mate just sitting here at the computer listening to bit of eagles and sipping on a coffee and Port just to keep the warmth in my system i guess i am getting far to used to the South Australian climate....
Mate this is what the forums is all about i think is to meet new buddies have a bit of a chat and who knows what can happen in this small world of ours...Mate i myself can't talk that long on the phone or let alone a conversation in a street...So at times i think the best ways of communicating to me mates is throu a computer as i have time to think about what i have to say and i feel that i can tell so much more...Mate its really funny from the start of your topic we were only doing a few 2 liners to full on conversations i think over the time we have been communicating we have got to know each other a bit better and we can openly talk about a subject we both like to do....
anyway enuff of that babble above...Mate an onion bag full of couta heads mate i say ya can only give it ago you just dont know what will happen when ya get a bit of berley happening mind you give the bag a few shakes every now and then just to keep it active....
Mate it sound like the weather is coming good in Gods country like here mate i wont be getting out tommorow night now as me mate has his sisters birthday to attend to so me and cheryl(fiance) are heading out in the morning as theres a few whales in the gulf as i prolly mentioned in a previous post so we will be heading out and having alook and dropping a line in for a whiting...
Yes mate ya guessed what a fred is mate but its actually a white pointer so that will be interesting to see as some of these sharks in the gulf like to chew on outboards believe it or not....hopefully it doesnt happen to me touch wood.....
Anyway mate i better get an early one as i plan to be out on the water early and like you i like the conversations we are having and lets hope we can continue.....
anyway cheers

gday mick.. i was a bit stuffed last night went to sleep on the lounge... any way mate we had a big day yesterday we hit the water at 8 oclock and didnt come in until 4..it was a great day no wind no current...mate we didnt get any trumpeter we couldent get em past the bloody seals they were every were... every time we got settled some where they would find us.. we managed to get 15 perch and 17 gurnard past them.. pretty sure we lost about 5 stripies, but we only got them about half way up so i cant be sure...mate i now seals have got to eat but mate i can understand how come sometimes you see them washed up on rocks and beaches with a round hole in them..... but having said that if everybody had the attitude lets shoot the seal.. apart from being illigal what would the white pointers in the area eat...(probibly me next time i went diving).. anyway mate as angry as i was yesterday im sure i will get over it...i think it was just onr of those days as they never bothered us last time we was down there...mate joanne (wife) is going to post that stuff tommorow.. mate what i have done is i only gave her the best ones to photo copy because there was some reports that didnt have much info on them because of bad weather, lack of fish to report, ect.so if your wondering why there is some dates missing thats why...anyway mate did you and yours get out and see those whales and do some fishing ???...mate i did the right thing today and mowed the lawns and tidied up the yard ect.. and the wife said i was a good boy and that i can go fishing again next weekend so that will make my week at work more tolerable now that i have that to look forward to.. mate i havent used my boat for nearly 3 months and i've got nearly 2 full tanks of fuel i must use before its no good..(i've been told 3 months is about the life span of fuel once its been mixed) so i will get the cobwebs of mine this weekend coming.... any way mate i might say see ya for now and hope to talk to you again soon......brian

Mate If ya had all the seals hanging around ya thats where the stripies would have been mate but as ya say tryingto get the stripies up past the buggers is pretty tricky......MAte the Perch still would have been pretty good.....
Mate We did get out yesterday for a couple of hours but wenever came across the whales as they obviously didnt hang around for me what a bummer....We did mangae to drop a line for 5 minute s before it was getting to bad and Cheryl was getting a bit green which i think i was the wiset move i made we were nearly swamped by a green wave mate came out of no where i just about shit meself when i sore this wall of green water heading over the top of the canopy but we managed to stay upright and dry.....But all in all for the time we were out there we enjoyed it would have been better if the weather didnt cut up......
Mate i was watching rexy this afternoon and it was on the the murray river mate catching the goodoo mate i am guna have to get eself another boat specially for the river as my boat is a bit big for trolling with a 90 horse....
Mate i will be looking forward to Wednesday when i recieve those goodies mate I understand ya sending the best reports and all that mate i would do the same as ya dont really wanna read nothing.....

gday mick.. mate that would have been it for my missus when you got that wave over ya.. it would have been a case of go directly to shore... im not sure that she trusts me as it is.. looks like our girls have something in common...(sea sickness)...mate im sure you are right about them seals they seemed to know when ever we was in a good spot...some of the places we fished where the fishing was not as good they didnt hang around long at all...mate why wouldnt you just get an auxillary for your big boat... unless you are looking for something abit easier to handle...mate i now what a hassle a big boat can be in rivers...but im a bit sorry i sold mine as i could have come in handy with the sort of fishing i've been doing lately...... im not gunna let those seals beat me mate were going back to fortescue sat for round 2 if the weather is allright....if not i will probibly go down to the iron pot for a look as i havent been there for a long while and the flathead and pearch are on the move down that way i hear.......anyway thats about it from me tonight mate so i will catch ya later mate look after your self........brian

Mate cheryl loves it out on the water she even has a boat licence believe it or not she has had her boat licence longer then what she has had a car licence and she got her lboat licence when she was 16 and her car licence about 18 months ago....But she also suffers from sea sickness but she sees it this way that she doesnt wanna spoil it for me but i do the right thing mate if i know she is feeling uncomfortable and starting to feel crock theres no point being out there.......When the green wave came we were actually moving......
Mate The reason why i am not opting for an auxilary on the back my boat is the fact it wont suit the style of fishing i want to do in the murray as my craft is a bit to big for the back waters of the Murray..... So therefore i am going to get a small tinny for the murray river just to get into places i cant with the big motor and i would also like to troll at slow slow speeds so the use of an electric motor comes into the equation....I am not going to get rid of my 17 footer and i will still use that for the murray but as a base type craft......
Mate Thats the thing with stripies ya got get them before the seals turn up but I am confident you will get a few more before the season comes to an end.....
The iron Pot mate gee you could be playing with fire there mate eventhou i reckon there can be some very good fishing to be had down that way.. the only reason why i say ya playing with fire its along way back to port if it cuts up.....But mind you mate i reckon when tuna season is at its best it wouldnt surprise me if a few bluefin Show there faces around the pot I think its worth a shot even if there is only albacore......
Anyway mate It looks as if i am home bound this weekend and by the looks of the charts mate your going to be sitting inside twidling ya thumbs as it looks as a big southerly is going to hit tassie with gale force winds but hopefully that will past by the time the weekend gets here.....But i am confident you will get out for a fish....
Mate Snapper Season Starts again tommorow so i will be starting to look at targetting the knuckles once again till the next closed season which is around november.....So hopefully over the next few weeks i can report to you on the snapper Fishing as it should be really firing soon in the gulf.....
anyway take care buddy and i will talk to ya soon

gday mick.. mate joanne is exactly the same one the water.. she is fine while traveling, and when there is no swell..last time we went out together there was dolphins in the bay and she made me follow them for ever while she was leaning over the side trying to touch them,i didnt think i was ever going to get to the ramp... but it was worth it because it was a time she really enjoyed...mate i now what you mean about the iron pot it can be a bastard of a place when the wind gets up.. like the last time we were there diving for cray i was glad to have a wetsuit on... while im on the subject.. last time we were there im sure i seen strip trumpeter i cant be sure though cause they were a bit far away to tell for sure, they just looked a bit big to be bastard trumpeter....i know they used to be fairly common in the derwent years ago...mate snapper season aye thats going to keep you amused for a while.. like i think i said before i dont know stuff all about snapper mate, but im begining to think they are closely related to trumpeter in there habits.....mate i've asked blaze to keep me updated about the snapper up north so i can pick a time to go up and have a look for them.. he sent me a message saying he thought about 6 weeks they would start to move...(hope so).. any way mate you should be able to read all about tassie snapper and tuna tommorow...mate read the story about the big pig mate because i think this is the boat we will charter if you come over... he really was on fire this year catching tuna when others struggled... i've been told he only charges $500 or there abouts...i think i will ring him if i get time on the weekend to see if thats right or not... any way mick i better get going i spose...till next time mate....... brian

Mate i still reckon there is some stripies in the derwent mate prolly not as prolific as it once was but i still say they are there in the deeper water....
Mate 500 bucks to fish for tuna mate this sounds rather cheap mate considering most boats are around 800 dollars for the day we could possibly just look at just ourselves just going....
Mate i went for a bit of drive today along the port river mate just to see if anyone was catching a fish or to but things where bloody quite anyway i happen to come across a tasmanian in my travels only just moved over over here to adelaide we just got a chatting and chatting and we got on the topic of Snapper he was origanally from luanceston...
Mate I think Snapper do like the same huants as stripies mate anything with structure or gutters or any good ground like reefs mate.....I can't actually wait to get out to freds or the claris wreck or even out to the goannas in the next few weeks to have ago at the buggers mate.....
Anyway i better get going mate as i havent got much to report on tonight and i look forward to the reading material mate....

gday mick..i think the big pig is capable of trolling about 5 rods at a time so there would be room aboard for an extra person... anyway mate we can work that out when the time comes....you should have got those reports today mate, so you will be able to work out when it will be best to come over.. just remember mate the later in the season the bigger the fish, or thats the way it seems to me...it depends on what you would rather... just had a thought mate i am predicting this season that the yellow fin will make there presence felt as they were a bit shy last season...i think the year before mate they went mad down here.. i must remember to ask my mate daniel when it was cause he was showing me his photo abum last weekend and they were nice fish...mate this season i want to catch an albacore and a yellow fin mate as i have never caught one of these fish before...all i keep catching is those nuisance bloody blue fin ;D..any way mate the crappy weather should pass by friday night so it looks like i will be hopefully out amongst some fish on the weekend... i have been switching my brain off as soon as i get to work and mate guess what i have discovered that the week goes much faster if you do.. i will do it again next week and pretend that im fishing instead..i bet it goes even faster then ;D.. anyway mate enought of that i better git going for now... till next time....brian

Mate i sure did recieve them thankyou very much but ya didnt have to send them express mate.....
Mate i am pretty well easy to how we fish mate if it is only 500 bucks mate 3 people i dont mind at all i just dont want a big crew meaning we have to share rods all day with 10 others.....
MAte Snapper season is on again havent heard any reports as yet I have a big convention to goto in october.....Which will be held at Port Hughes this is when i will be getting serious with the knuckles mate as i have seen biggons come out of there...
MAte i will be starting to read the info tonight mate had a quick glimpse at them today...
Mate i actually know john Taylor pretty well mate He used to be in the same fishing club i was in when i was living in Tasmania...Mate with his reports i usually would say he recieved them 2 weeks prior to advertising thehot spots....Mind you he is very very knowledgeble man and knows his stuff.....

Gday Blaze
Mate dont feel ashamed mate i have to get me cat to type for me as she types quicker then i do....
Mate gps hey what sort of gps you after mate you just after a chart plotter or just a plain gps mate
it seems that germain gps are the way to go as far as gps go... i am using a navman gps plotter 900 which set me back 900 bucks but its worth it having a gps...
I would try ebay as thats the most popular auction site on the net blaze and Someone from Hobart is selling a Garmain gps it looks in good nick mate but as for that style of gps you could one brand new around the 4-5hundred dollar mark anyway
i will keep my eye out for ya blaze if i heare of any then i will let ya know buddy....
estury fishing hey where abouts you heading arthurs or just around smithton????
anyway cheers blaze and feel free to speak more often as i said the cat types for me gee my pussy is a smart feline hey

gday mick and blaze..well mick it sounds like im not the only crazy one...blaze i think that we are going to freeze for sure on sat it is just about snowing down here in hobart.. its suposed to be coming fine sat but sunday looks like it will be the better day...(decisions.. decisions)...blaze thanks for the update mate let me know how you go on the weekend mate when you get time..thanks for keeping in touch as it is good to have some one up north to let me know when the king fish and snapper start to run...mick you wont have to worry about sharing a rod mate as i hate the idea of that myself...mate i was thinking last night how you have a closed season over there on snapper i am just wondering how long before we get that sort of thing over here.. as it stands here at the moment the only scale fish that we have a closed season on to my knowledge is the banded morwong...mate i wonder what fish it would be,and would it be nesicary with all the marine parks we have allready in place... ??? do you have many marine parks over there mate ???,and are snapper the only scale fish with a closed season ???and is it closed to the pro fisherman as well as recreational ???...mate i am full of questions tonight so i better leave you for tonight before i think of more...ps mate didnt get to the post office on time the day before last, and when i say im going to do something on a certain day or time it is almost certain that i will.. anyway mate it was no big deal..see ya for now mate, talk again soon and hope you have a good trip blaze.....brian

Gday Brian
Mate we have a murray cod closure which i think closes in the next couple of weeks and ends around christmas time and as i said we have a closed snapper season twice a year....
Mate Dont get me wrong brian about the tuna trip mate I was just mentioning a dislike of mine really and it was away to clear my mind that is what you want as well mate becuase the thing is its big money to coff up just between the 2-3 of us mate and we have to be happy to do that as i said i am happy to spend 200 bucks for the day....
Anyway mate never hold off the questions mate if i cant answer them over one post i will certainly answer them over a few post mate....I see it its the only way to learn...
I have read just about all those reports mate that ya sent me So whens the next lot coming ;D ;D
Mate it was actually interesting reading what Darren Sherrif or whats his name from up north who wrote the article on Catching the Snapper...The thing is what he wrote about is rather true in a sense i dont think he fishes it to the full potential as he should by the way i read it.......but it was rather good story just the same
I also read the small article on The Big Pig Mate the way i read that it was a charter boat from Victoria......
Another report was From Adam Hill on the Southern Bluefin Tuna Very good article I can remember when Adam started out his days in tackle industry down at sorell and then moving outside Shop at eastland and now Situated next the knives shop....
I find Adam to be very friendly and will Speak to anyone I can remember last time i was back home i walked into the shop and he said to me hows South oz that blew me away bit becuase i didnt think he would remember my face at all...
Rocky carrosis repot Well he is a very interesting guy i actually like the way he thinks about Tuna fishing he is always thinking of ways of catching the tuna wether it is cubing or live baiting very talented charter guy....but rather good report from Rocky
I also like the thoughts on bluefin from the top anglers from the state...Some names there i don't know but Ashley and david Hallem they really havent been around the game for years and suddenly bang still in the high light last time i heard Ashley was woring for a pro.....
Mate very good read and i thankyou mate considerably mate i now maybe just looking at the end of april-early may.....
Mate i am absolutely astounded really you havent caught an albacore yet mate that was my first tuna mate and then was the bluefin but also i am still yet to catch a yellowfin mate and what i have heard the guy up in NSW are having hard time of catching yellowfin so who knows whats happening wether they will show up more or not...
anyway i better go so i will catch ya later brian

gday mick...mate we had a great day down here in tassie took my boat down this morning great conditions..i caught 1 trumpeter about 4.5 kg it was the only one for the day... but we caught a nice feed of perch and gurnard.. mate there was not a seal to be seen all day..we lost a couple of trumpeter should have had 3....mate they were hard to find to day every time the baits hit the bottom the gurnard were straight on to them, i rekon that we threw about 1000 of them back.. man my hands are so sore from spikes and hand line burn, but it was worth it we had a great day...mick i have sent you a email... a phamplet i got off the counter at the takle shop tell me if you couldnt read it cause yiu now how good i am at sending emails :-[....mate i dont know if i have confused you but the big pig is charter boat from eagle hawk neck.. and he has a great reputation for finding fish...mate if i have sent it propilly you can read about it and give me your thoughts, check out the price mate i think it is a bargain cause he only takes 4 max but at that price mate i dont think that we would bother taking any more than 3 thats at the very most...anyway mate i got home today and joanne got me a video to watch and guess what mate it is called...john kenny.. whyalla's giant snapper...have you seen it mate ???...mate if the pictures on the cover are anything to go by mate it will be a great video,i will watch it tommorow...mate i just remembered when i said to you about catching only blue fin i didnt mention that we caught some stripped tuna in my boat a couple of years ago...so i supose that i did start at the begining as far as tuna go.. mate i will really be busting my guts this year to catch a yellow and a albacore...mate i am going to save all the new reports from now on. and when i've got about a months worth i will send them over to ya...also mate i was hoping that you would see what i mean about early april probibly not being the best time for tuna... mate like you said mate i think may-early june is the best..but having said that it could be differant next year who knows... anyway mate i hope that you had a good night fishing tonight and i will hopefully talk to you again soon mate...... brian

Gday Brian
Mate what a night it was last night not one mothery at all...we anage a pj and one lizard.....it was an interesting night just the same but it was scary stuff coming back to the ramp at midnight made ran aground about twice becuase it was a very dead lw tide...
Mate Just thinking why you may not have been getting many stipies mate yesterday that you may have head your baits close on the ground what i find when chasing strpie trupeter mate is to lifet the baits of the ground and this means less bites but means you should get stripies if they are there...
Mate i look foraward to the pamphlet ya sending me via email.....
Mate you havent confused me mate in one of those reports you sent me i thought i read that it came from vic.....Mate the more you tell me about this guy the more i like.....4 people max very good So if it is only the 2 of us and if blaze comes along we would be very comfortable i reckon...
Anyway i better go mate as i still have the boat to clean up....

gday mick..mate running aground must have been a bit of worry ..did you do any damage ???....mate i dont know how far you recon the first bait should be from the bottom, but the rigs i make i have the first hook about 5ft from the bottom, second about 6ft and third hook about 7ft..what do you recon about that ???mate i just finished watching that video i told you about and they caught there bag limit 2 days in a row..mate they were huge i couldent beleive it they drove the gaff into where ever it landed through the back of them anywhere real sloppy work i thought..anyway mate other than that it wasent to bad,it showed a bit about whyalla as well...mate you should have already got that email of that phamplet unless i stuffed it up again you know what im like...mate i forgot to tell you about something that happened to me yesterday..we set a cray pot yesterday and we baited the rope up with some 4 hooks for strippies all were attached to the rope with shark clips.. any way mate i lowered it down until it landed on the bottom, there was about 14ft of rope to spare so i thought no worries and threw the bouy over ..no worries i watched it loose rope floating on the surface so i was just about to drive off and as i did the bloody thing started to go under..shit so i drove over and it was about 5ft under so i grabed the gaff and just as i went to hook it it started to disapper flattout..now i know what you are going to say the same as i said it must have fell off a ledge right...wrong mate now this is the weird part remembering that i watched the bouy disapeer straight down out off sight....after all this happened we went off fishing for about 6 hours....we came back past the area were we had set the pot on the way home and guess what there sitting on top of the water was my pot bouy jeusus crist mate and #@*& me dead if im lying i cannot explain it...we thought about it all the way home mate we thought about current doing it but ruled that out because the bouy went straight down not of to the side as you would emagin..there is no way a fish of an kind could have done it cause the clips were only set into the rope no more than 10ft from the pot..weird stuff mate what do you recon happened.....ps... mate the pot was in about 80meters of water at the time... any way mate better go now as you probibly think i have really lost the plot and i got a few things to do before bed so till next time mate see ya latter..... brian

Gday Brian
Mate I wasnt the only one to run aground last night either mate my mates neighbour was out last night as well and he said he came a cropper as well .3 tide mate just enuff to float the boat the funny thing to it all i have done this 100 times before this was in the deepest point in the inlet mate lucky it was only sand through where it happend as where i did was at a speed boat racing club so it was rather clean anyway i had a good look over the hull no damage as i wasnt going all that quick mate through there as i know the dangers of the inlet and only a bit of paint work of the skegg of the motor so all in all i was very lucky mate.....Mate where i was is like Marion Bay in Tassie mate heading out throu the channels to give you a little idea If you come over to adelaide one day mate i will take ya out there and give you a bit of squiz at what we have to contend with over here.....Some places ya have to have a tractor to luanch......
Mate it sounds like that vid isnt a bad one but its is sad to see people just gaff a fish anywhere...But i put it down to not enuff gaff ezperience or never shown or seen a gaff being used.....
Mate Whyalla Mate its really great fishing mate but the only problem is getting a knuckle amongst the squire mate......
Mate what i reckon it was that took ya float under could have most likey 2 things a seal or shark there they only 2 possibilites it could be and as the way you explained it to me i predict it was a seal...if you have seen what actually how seals attack the fish when hooked at the surface they take of slowly and then take of in a sudden burst....I could be very well wrong but it would have been either a seal or shark...
Mate your rig you use for stripie fishing gee you have your baits spread out a bit....but those where just my thoughts on the stripies anyway..
Mate i havent been able to download the email yet as there is 1 email that is pretty big and my isp doesnt allow big files to enter my mailbox...I hope its not your email i have to get them to delete so i can access my mail....But don't stress mate it isnt your fault i cant recieve it.....bloody computers mate....
anyway catchya later brian i am rather tired myself after last night

gday mick..mate i can imagine what you must go through if it is anything like marion bay over there..mate marion bay is not one of my fav places i have almost run aground there several times and thats even before you get to the narrow part.. actually i think the narrows itself is not to bad on a calm day,on a bad day as you know it can be real scary, its one of the only places that i am not ashamed to admit that i try to avoid going to...mate i dont know about your shark seal theory cause like i said mate the hooks only had small baits on them and none were bitten off and you would think that if something grabed a fish that was hooked it would only be able to pull the bouy under the depth of the highest hook..and mate i watched it dissaper at least 40 ft straight down.. any way mate i think i will have to put that one down to the unexplaneible......mate im sorry about that email i have no idea what i done to you this time :-[...mate i will put it in the mail and send it to ya..i think that would be a lot safer...anyway mate im a bit weary tonight i had big day at work today so i think it is time for the bed...till next time mate....brian

Gday Brian
Mate you dont need to send me it in the email i was able to download your email fine this time you did everything correct this time it was a mate of mine that sent me this huge file not that he did it on purpose or anything its just that with my email i am limited to 2 meg limit to emails i recieve and his was 4 meg thats tasmanians for ya mate ;D so dont panic mate as you know i just wasnt sure what email was causing me the problem and thankfully it wasnt yours in the end..
Mate I am pretty impressed at the look of the big pig it would have to be the smallest charter boat operating down there at the moment....but it really looks impressive mate i would be happy to spend a day or 2 on the big pig....
Mate give him a call for us and have a bit of chat with him about when he thinks would be the best time...i just would like to get hear about his thoughts and attitude towards fishing mate if you know what i mean....
Mate the reason why i like to get the info is becuase it helps me decide wether it is a good ride or not... many years ago i stuffed up with a charter on thr flying fish 2 he wasnt a bad bloke but he was a bit gunho in ways.....
Mate Marion is pretty easy mate for what i can remember its just a matter of sticking to the channel markers....mate where i was coming through is usually pretty good on a low tide which usually it has a depth of 1.2 at its lowest but the other night it was very low and the lowest i seen it and as there is no channel markers it makes it hard to navigate through the night......Mate night fishing in the boat is rather good fun but is pretty scarey....Me mate said to me this is strange you know this of the back of ya hand and i thought i did i was even following the same plot as i did coming out of there as i have a chart plotter...Mate there is some scarey channels over here mate like to get to some of the big snapper grounds you have to travel through 5-10k channels and there is no short cuts either.....But you get used to them but i would never battle these of the night thou if i went out of the night over at some of these good snapper ground i would be out there till morning.....
Mate if you didnt realise i was out to 12 midnight in the boat saturday night and running a ground at midnight aint fun.....but the thing is you have to chalk these things up toexperience....a bit of it was my fualt in ways as i didnt really take much notice of tides i wish i did now as i prooly would have come back in a couple hours later....or head to another ramp that wasnt as bad...
Mate well i dont really know what would have happened mate with that story mate i believe ya and it must be the unexplainable thing mate....
Anyway mate i went out trout fishing today for a couple of hours and got 3 fish all brown but they were like sardines mate i got talking to a couple of anglers that where there and they didnt even get a sniff at a fish so i was happy with my effort i lost about 4 fish as well....
anyway mate i better go mate as i am bit tired myself and talk soon mate and i will talk with my fiance about booking a trip to tassie....
cheers
Mick

gday mick..mate im pleased to know that it wasent my email that was the problem, mate i was blaming joanne anyway cause i still dont know how to do it so i get her to do it for me...mate i will ring up this weekend about the best time in his opinion for you to come over..i will also explain that you are coming all the way from s/a so that way he will hopefully put a bit more thought into it instead of booking us into a time that suits him...mate i dont think he is like that anyway mate everybody i have spoke to recomends him not only as a good operator but a top bloke aswell...mate dont even start me on the subject of the flying fish...mate gunho you are to kind... he was a lunatic mate i went on that boat after answering a a add in the paper from some bloke wanting to arange a crew to go on on this boat.. i rang him and aranged to met the rest of the crew on the day at the warfe at port arthur... anyway mate i got there on the day and met the other blokes in the car park and then went down to the boat..mate i was straight away impressed with the boat, but mate as soon as we got out of port my attatude towards him changed for the worst...he only new 1 speed and that was flat out in what was close to a 3 meter swell, and being a fast boat he proceded to launch it of every wave he could..there was some not so young blockes on bourd and they were hanging on for dear life...anyway mate in all i thought he showed a total lack of regard for his paying customer and i dont think he knew the first thing about trolling for tuna, and i dont think he could wait for the day to be over..that was my impession anyway...i actully heard sometime later that he spat a customer straight out the back off it somewhere around tasman..and i wouldent doubt it either..mate i have already sent that mail but i doesent mater mate because i dont think i sent you that price list from the new spirit so i have sent that with it mate so it wont be a total waste...good to hear that you were out chasing them trout mate,i still havent been trout fishing yet i still have the salt in my veins, and the cray diving opens in another 2 months..so i dont know that i will bother with them this year mate cause between the diving and chaseing the albacore- yellow fin after cristmas i think i would be just throwing money away....anyway mate thats about all for now from me i think i will go and get in the good books with the ball and chain before i tell her that i want to go fishing again this satarday.....till next time mate....brian

Mate the fly fish well he really only lasted a season as i heard he went bankrupt...anyway i also knew his deckie fairly well as he was my cousins cousin...but you are right mate he only knew one speed flat out......mind you it wasnt a bad looking rig for an ex cray boat.....
Mate The big pig Sounds like a ripper of a boat mate and what you are telling me i am liking it more and more.....Mate i trust your judgement on him as well i dont think we have to worry to much as the way you speak of him he is a creative fisho.....
Mate i i wont be doing much fishing over the next month as i am saving hard to fish a convention on the october long weekend here in South Oz at Port hughes Which can be another place for some good knuckles mate....I am estimate my costs over this weeken to be about 500 bucks by the time i fish for 3 days with 100 litres a day approx and food accom and a bit of drinking money....So i will be really really looking forward to it....This wil be the first time I will be doing any distance work with the boat as most of my fishing has been done close to shore i will be looking at heading about 20-30k of shore....
anyway mate i better go as i am getting tired and i will chat soon

gday mick..mate wnen you say that you are fishing a convention is that a competition or something..or is it a club thing...anyway mate it sounds like a great few days i hope you get to go mate...20-30k mate you sure are going out a long way..... mate whats the go out there mate how deep is it out there i sure hope its not as deep as our water over here mate because if it is you can leave your rods at home and pack a deck winch ;D.. anyway mate it sounds like you wouldent be out there by your self..there would be other boats there if you had troubles.......mate im having a bit of trouble finding someone to fish with this weekend..i got the ok of the wife last night to go..actually she said....do what ever you want....so i took that as a yes..i will ask about again tommorow i now a bloke who will go it is just a matter of tracking him down...i have got some proper strippie hook i am keen to try out mate they are the ones the pro's use on there drop lines..they are weird looking hooks mate they are abit like a tuna circle but the point of the hook actually curves right back round and points downwards..but i have been assured that they are the greatest deep water hook ever invented.... any way mate i will run a couple with the other hooks and see what my thoughts are........well mate its that time of the night again.... so till next time mate.........brian

Yes mate its a compitition and there is about 3 clubs involved....Mate you are right there will be other boats out there as this area is pretty popular for the snapper mate..... Its nothing like the depths of the tasman sea mate the depths would be about 20-50 metres....As it still inthe Gulf mate.....
Mate i would come fishing with ya mate but its a bit to far just for the day ;D...Mate if you dont get anyone to go with you why not just have a bit of a fish around from bream mate they should be biting very well mate specially around shag bay rose bay area....MAybe do a flatty session down cremorne mate....

Gday Rob
Mate you are More then welcome to come on this charter with us mate ..... Brian is going to be giving the Skipper of the Big Pig a call Soon for me on which will be the best time that we should book even thou we have good idea when....
Blaze You won't go wrong with a gps mate it is really a great tool for fishing and all that mate they are pretty accurate these days....Mate i saw a similar gps on ebay the other night and the guy was from Hobart.....
Mate gps saves alot of time in my book as once you get to your spot you can put a markerbuoy down and start drifting along and you know where you have started from and this can be ideal when locating snapper...As i said the markerbuoy is your starting point and you can always come back to that position to start once again...
I have a gps chartplotter in my boat Rob they are really handy as it shows me a map of the coastline where i am and i have put cmap chart of the area i fish and gives the areas i fish a lot more detail as in depth of water etc...
Dont run your gps near the compass on ya boat mate as i think that actually will interfere with your gps....
Mate when i come over to tas next year with anyluck i might even try to get to Smithton For a bit of Fish as well so we might have the chance to meet up again up there....but it will prolly be during the week we would have to fish together if your interested in that....As i also wouldnt mind calling on Malcom Brown and his mother as i havent had the chance to see my aunty Since my uncle died a few years back.....
Anyway if i keep on talking mate i will where this blody keyboard out mate so cheers

gday mick..i found port hughes on the map mate it doesent look like a very big bay on the map mate but i emagine that it is a huge area of water....the map i have tells me that the average depth out there is about 26 fathoms, and goes out to about 55 ftm just behind kangaroo island...mate i can now see what you mean about the water being shallow over there compared to tasmanian standards, were we can be fishing in a average depth of about 50 fathoms with a 15 min run of most coastal boat ramps...anyway mate im pissed of cause im not going tomorow now mate cause the bloke i was going fishing with told me this morning that he would not be able to go after all...anyway mate i might dust of the bream rods and go buy my self as you sugested cause the bream are going nuts down the river at the moment and i am told that the average size is about 2kg..so i just might sugest to joanne that we take the kids down maybe sunday...mate i will be all reved up after this week cause i am having a weeks holiday starting on the 9th sep...so i hope to have lots to tell you about that week..any way mate have a good weekend over there and look after yourself......latter mate....brian

Gday Brian
Mate I never got out at all today other commitments that i forgot about but not to worry thou mate as long as there is water next week i will be out there having ago at the bigguns mate....It is a rather sad weekend here really for our household as it is being fatherdays and my father being in Tas.. and cheryls father spending his time building a house in heaven its rather sad really just starts to make you think about life a bit and how much you treasure it mate... Dont get me wrong we still try to make the weekend kind of happy for us both...Its just one time of the year i get very well homesick....
Anyway mate i will stop chatting about that....
Mate that video would be good if you could get it copied and i will pay for the copy no probs there mate as you know i love keeping up with the fishing in Tasmania after all its where i was born and bred mate.....
Mate it is good trying to find someone that has the same passion about fishing as yourself mate they are far and few i think as it also helps when planning decent trips away mate as you have the same things in common and you only ave to look at each other and say yes or no....I am still to find someone like that over here in S.A...
Anyway mate i better go as it is late and i am rather tired for a saturday night...anyway i hope next weekend i get out for a fish....
cheers

gday mick...mate dont worry about paying for a copy of the video when i get it,its just something i would like to do....mate you are right about finding some one who is realiable to fish with..in the short time that i have known danial which amounts to about 10 trips we have got to the stage where we have an understanding of each other right down to who does what from the launching of the boat, all the little jobs on the boat like cutting enought bait so that there is always enought for both of us..sharing expenses right down the middle..its just like a well oiled machine mate and all this is done without thought and without question...mate i watched the rex hunt show today and there was bit about snapper fishing in a place called western port in victoria.....mate it was great stuff and i really do envy you over there.. fishing for snapper mate is going to be high on my list of things that i must do this year...anyway mate i got to get lunch and stuff ready for tommorow so i better get to it....till next time mate.......brian

Gday Brian
Mate its great to have a fishing Partner like that i have done prolly a quite a few trips with one mate i still have to tell him what parts of the boat i like him to help on and all that but he is getting alot better as each trip goes by....but he does share the expense mate but its hard for me to ask him to cover half the cost of fuel mate as it costs me about 100 bucks to fill being 130litre tank but when i we are fishing locally we wouldnt use anymore then 20 bucks in fuel anyway so as far as bait and fuel goes i just ask him for 20-30 bucks depending what fish we plan to attack....
Mate I maybe living in the land of snapper mate but they are far and few between as far as the knuckles go mate you really have to put alot of time and money into snapper fishing brian Specially with burley and bait are the biggest costs here but time is another thing you have to prepared to fish overnighters as well mate.....Mate I hope you do get ya first snapper this seasonmate i would envy you alot mate as i have never caught a snapper in Tassie before so that will be something you have done before me....Mate another good fish that you would wanna try for is kingfish mate we are starting to get kingfish here in South Oz quite regular in numerous locations....
But getting back to Snapper mate this is where you wanna get yaself a gps mate i Don't mean to be pushy here but it will help you find these snapper spots again if you are that keen to target them and get one as you may wanna do a few trips this season for them...Mate Snapper fishing is really alot of hard work its long and tedious work but the results are brilliant if you get a knuckle and you will know it is a knuckle when one hits you will think you have a steam train on mate and a few good head shakes very good tell tale signs...
Mate also when you get a hook up mate of a snapper don't and i stress dont slacken ya line at anytime during the fight as you will ose the fish.. i even suggest that even if you get a good hit from a ray or a shark play it like ya fighting a snapper dont give the fish slack at all the first few moments mate just hold on until he finishes running then pump and wind as you do with tuna....
Mate you will have a ball mate when ya go snapper fishing mate just remeber fish the tides this is one time you have to take notice of tides wind conditions and just read and read and watch as much as you can on snapper mate and ask ask questions mate to help yaself get ya first snapper.....
Remeber snapper fishing is still new to Tasmania really....
Mate i better stop prattling on a bit mate and start thinking of hitting the sack myself....
Oh thatnks mate if ya get the chance to copy the video mate....Also Through this week sometime i am doing some Surf Fishing mate so i wont be giving the boat a run this weekend coming but i will be chasing Some of S.A's well known Salmon mate as there is a few about at the moment just a few cocky salmon around 3-4kg mate so i am looking forward to that.....It may even get me interested in Surf fishingas this will be the first time surf fishing which i will be fishing at Waitpinga mate which is heading down towards cape jervis and Kangeroo island way mate.....
anyway i better sign of mate and hit the sack as i wanna be up early in the morning as i am on a bit of a fitness spree at the moment as i walk about 4-5k a day at the moment just to shed a few kilo of the old tyre of mine...
anyway cheers mate

Hi All
gps arrived today, pick it up tomorrow. The guys that catch the snapper up this way regularly hang back on the anchor rope in the current untill x marks the spot with the gps. i have a feeling in the spot at the petrels(island) that you need to be within 20 odd feet of x. Still none boated yet. they tell me there is a lot of bait fish in the bass strait at the moment and 1 theory is that the snapper follow them this way( what do you guys think) and what else follows them, interesting.
went out sunday to Perkins and robins island and fish hard for 4 flathead (keepers) and 2 back in. Caught a huge gurnard on a soft plastic. drifting along and hung this thing straight down just to watch the action and try to learn how to fish them and out of the blue bang, realy attact the thing with a lot of agession, really could be the thing of the future. so brain no snapper yet or any thing else with a bit of size
catch ya later
(what a mouthful or should i say a typeful)

gday mick..thanks mate for all those tips...the more i hear about snapper the more i know i must have a go at these fish....mate putting in time to try and catch one of these fish wouldent worry me a bit because that is one of the reasons i want to catch a snapper, cause i now that it is not going to be easy..if it was going to be easy then it wouldent be as important....mate i understand that the more you learn about a certain fish the more prepared you are when you fish for them....mate since i have been chatting to you over the last few months i have dragged all of my fishing mag colection out of the shed which stands about 4ft tall stacked..mate i have found myself going back through all those mags and reading things that i would not have read before such as snapper articles, kingfish,,and i have even read some of the stories on jew fish...i guess what i am trying to say is that lately i have been trying to think outside the square...i think for to long i have been stuck in the same rut as far as only targeting easy to catch fish...i think that is why i am so obsessed with strippies lately cause they are proving to be a bit hard to catch,so at the moment we are learning more and more each trip, and by asking others there opinions and ideas we can only improve...mate i have asked blaze to keep me posted on things up north so hopefully when things start to fire up there we will head up and do a bit of looking and learning...danial and i talked about going up for the kingfish classic when its on..mate there is no good of us going up there expecting to catch fish thou as neather of us have ever fished up there before ,but we figure there will be lots of boats we can watch and learn where and how they fish..sort of a sneaky fact finding mission if you get my meaning...any way mate i had better get going there is lots more to say mate but the time has beat me tonight...mate i am sick of these 4 oclock starts at work already...but isnt funny how we can bounce out of bed if its a fishing trip that starts at 4...anyway mate till next time.... brian

Gday Blaze
Mate what you are saying is quite right in alot of ways as the snapper are holding in around the reefs channels or dropp offs mate and you don'y particularly wanna be right on top as you want your baits to drop into the area Specially if you a floating a pillie down the back through the berley..... Mate drift can be very benifical to the begginer trying to find a snapper and once you have found the snapper mark it off on your gps take particular notice of the ground covering where you get your snapper on the sounder... once you have got the gps marks mate do what you have been told by other people that you have spoken t...As it obvious to me they are not willing enuff to give you the marks to you so ya can catch a knuckle mate....Also Rob as you have notice it is taking you a fair while to get your first snapper and its obvious you still havent got one and by the sound of it Rob you lot your first Snapper mate As one thing a snapper will do is attack a jig or a bait on its way down...Did you notice how the fish took off when it hit the plastic lure???? did it start going like a steam train....As i said in my last post to brian When a snapper hits you must keep line ya line tight and let him run for the first few minutes or to when he stops running then pump and wind.....I really do suspect you lost ya first snapper.....But dont worry mate go back this weekend suss it all out plug the marks into the gps and try again...go out specifically for snapper dont even attempt to catch a flattie or anything like that maybe try catching some of these bait fish that you say is hanging around and use these as live bait as these will will be good signs that there could possibly be a few knuckles around......
Mate gps you will be having fun with it tommorow mate you wont even bother thinking of jumping on the net...
anyway good luck with it rob lets us know how ya get on next time mate
Gday Brian
Mate when i first started fishing i thought it was fab just going after the bread and butter species mate but ya soon get sick of them and you want to start challenging yaself with new species as the humble flattie or the humble stripey is just not enuff to get the adrenilin pumping....
Mate in the past few years i have had to restart my fishing and learn how to catch the fish in new areas and i am still learning over here mate new species are popping up all the time... i have just recently found out a strongie (dont know what the technical name for the fish is yet) but i heard its a shit fish and feeds on weed and when it hits ya line it hits like a snapper but dulls off and ends in boring fight....
the thing is if i can help you get ya first snapper on ya first outing brian i will try ....and i would be seriously trying up Smithton for them......
Mate you are doing the right thing by reading up on ya old mags mate on how others prepare them selves for snapper fishing.....Mate its a pitty you cant get ya self over here to S.A mate in the next couple of months mate specially in october when i head over to port hughes mate for the convention i am going to as this would have been a great oppurtunity for you to fish for snapper......
Mate i like the way ya going about all this with the attitude is we prolly wont get anything but the thing is by gettting out there and having ago is the biggest thing and learning..in one of those articles you sent me Brian was a very good read on snapper in the Tamar....its a pitty he didnt go into more specifics really....
Mate well i am going to have a serious yarn with the missus this week or next and start things rolling on the trip to tassie next year...did you end up ringing the guy about the Big Pig for us....if not i will email him.....
anyway i better go mate and i will talk to ya soon

gday blaze...thanks for the post mate i have been looking forward to hearing from you so i could find out whats going on up there....i have been reading the report every sunday in the paper and its much the same as you have said...mate there was a thing about a tagged white pointer on the net i was following a while ago..(neil the shark)i think its still there and its worth a look mate cause they tagged this shark i think in victoria somewhere and there is a map of where they tracked it by sattelite...it crossed bass straight and hung around the north and north east coast of tassie for a fair while..the c.s.i.r.o. said that they thought it followed the snapper over..so mate if you look up the c.s.i.r.o. web site mate it might give you an idea of where to look for snapper maybe... any way mate just a thought its well worth looking up anyway mate very interesting...anyway mate hope to talk to you again soon .....brian gday mick...mate it i blowing a bloody gale over here at the moment and there is not supossed to be any let up for a while.. hope it stops for the weekend mate i will be real savage if it dont cause we have arranged our trip to fortescue..... anyway mate i would love to come over there and fish with you,but i am not real finacial at the moment mate i have got to find about a billion dallars before the dive season starts..lincences,new wet suit out bourd service...not to mention the $ i have got to spend on reel services and tuna gear before the albacore and yellow fin turn up hopefully in january...mate i havent got around to ringing the pig yet mate but i have got all next week of work mate so i plan to get a lot of these little jobs done then....mate i wouldent be a bad idea if you emailed him as well mate and ask him any questions you may have, tell him in your email that i will be ringing him next week to talk to him about it.....mate i have been out in the shed tonight making sinkers for our trip satarday so i am abit behind tonight so i will have to go and get my act together...so talk to you again soon mate....brian

Gday Brian
Mate i know what ya mean mate its been blowing pretty hard since sunday night here with a few heavy spits of water mate....i hope it dies down here by Thursday morn so i can get out fishing for these salmon.....
Mate Sinker making hmmmm me and a mate of mine are going to get into making our own sinkers as well as he can get the lead for nothing of a mate....
Mate Neil the shark i can remeber watching his travels across the net as well mate...Mate I have to say one thing when there is a possible white Pointer hanging around they are likely feeding on Snapper and i think Shark is the only predator to the snapper but dont quote me on that one...but generally when there is a white hanging around mate there should be a few snapper lurking....
Mate alot of the boats over here in South oz head back in specially when there is a possible white sighting as there is a particular white out in the spencer gulf that usually shows up every year and likes to chew up outboards mate.....pretty scarey when ya gotta get back into shore.....
Mate you will get over here one day mate i'll make sure of that mate... as you can come over here and chase a few of our bluefin one year.....
Anyway mate i better go as i have to do some work in the garden tommorow as it is looking very untidy

gday mick..mate talk about a rough day we have had a real shocker down down here... it snowed at snow today at work and i heard the weather on tv for tommorow and its going to be bad again...there forcasting a 8 meter swell for the south coast :o....mate sharks have allways been a real intrest to me for years i have been reading about them and i have a collection of news paper cuttings mainly of shark attacks and a lot of tasmanian sightings and pictures of sharks caught before they become protected...mate a bloke i know was showing me last year what a very large mako done to his outbourd leg when they were berlying off eagle hawk neck the leg has deep scatches all over it were it went mad and try to eat it..mate i would loved to have been there as i am yet to see a good size shark close up...dont get me wrong mate i am no hero and some of the places i dive really spook me at times..i have just allways wanted to catch one or see a large one while in the relative saftey of a boat... mate last year ..(now your going to think im really nuts) me and another mate of mine took about 40 kg of berley to fortescue in my boat and headed out almost to the rock and punched the whole 40kg through my berly pot we had a slick happening for miles mate but nothing came anywere near the boat probebly a good thing in hindsight mate cause we were a long way from shore if something turned up and got nasty...anyway mate i supose we all got to do something a little bit crazy now and then just to get the heart ticking so that we know that we are still alive...anyway mate the boss told us today that we can start our holidays after tommorow so i hope this wind goes away cause i think that 8 meter swell would be a bit to much excitment for me....well mate that enough of me tonight...talk to you soon mate......brian

Mate Sharks well i think we have to give them respect mate specially whites not long ago really it would have been last summer a abolone diver was taken by 16 foot white pionter over at port lincoln way mate the thing is really mate alot of the people over there wanted this white killed fair enuff as it has killed a community man... but in all fairness to the shark i still say it should survive as that shark has more right to be there then us humans....Dont get me wrong mate i hate hearing about shark releated deaths but Some people dont respect sharks becuase they are a predator....Some say the Diver has more right to be in an area just becuase he makes a living out of it.....I think this is a very wrong attitude by alot of people i include myself in that attitude really becuase really us humans are entering the domain of sharks wether it will be a beach or diving fora living we take these risks mate and know what to expect if we enter the sea we do it our own risk and that we shouldnt kill a shark just becuase it thinks its feed time for him......
Sorry Mate i am just a bit passionate in ways about sharks as you are specially living in a well known white pointer area.....
Mate a few months ago we had a whale die here in South Australia Down near Cape Jervois and the amont of white pointers that were feeding of this carcass i wish at the time i was able to take the boat out and view what was going on down there but work commitents stopped me there....What really upset me mate there was this lunatic and held his ten year old Son on his shoulders and stood on the rotting whale carcass while 20ft whites feed of the rotting carcass i will never forget that and if i ever meet the lunatic well i wont go there....But the stupid thing Some people goto and then there families want the shark dead just becuase a lunatic did such a stupid thing....
Mate I also would love to catch a shark mate but i would have to say iwould release the shark back into the wild mate as these fish are glorious fish of the sea and ones that should be respected....Mate don't get me wrong mate i am not having ago at you as i know you wouldnt pull crazy stunts like that fellow with the whale carcass.... Anyway mate i will stop talking about those gracious animals mate......
Anyway mate i am up at 4 in the morning for a 5:30 start mate chasing a few salmon down at waitpinga mate but i wont be able to spend the whole day down there as i may get called in to load some trucks up tommorow mate i got a call at 2pm today to be at toll ipec to load some trucks mind you the pay is good 20 bucks an hour but the hours mate could take anywhere from 4-8hours but they try to keep it at the minimum mate and depends on how much they have to send of interstate...
Mate i think i will let ya have ya swell mate it looks as if you maybe confind to the like of the derwent pitty ya didnt go and get that trout licence mate you could always shoot of up around bridgewater around the lime kilns for a trout or 2 and even get a bream or 2 up that way...
anyway mate better go as i am expecting a big day tommorow fishing and possibly working as well...
cheers

gdaymick...yes mate you are right about how sharks should not be killed because of attacks on humans..while i can understand how the familys of victims might feel in regards to this subject,i feel the same as you when it comes to the great white...mate they are to be treated with the highest respect for what they are; the greatest predator ever createted...mate as you know my second great love is diving and every time i get in the water i know the rules..i am an intruder in an environment that i have no real buisness being in...mate while i have no great wish to ever be eaten, i accept the risk gladly and would not whish any harm to a shark if i was to be attacked..dont get me wrong mate i would be more than a bit pissed if i was ever unfortunate enough to be attacked..but when all is said and done they are only doing what they were designed to do...so having said that mate i should make it clear that i would have no problem catching a mako to keep, other than the fact that the white is protected i would never dream of killing such a perfect animal....anyway mate sounds like we have something else in common, that being loading trucks...mate at the risk of incriminating my self mate i am a logger and my job is to load log trucks...mate its not a job that i like its just that its about the only job i have ever been any good at and it feeds the family for now... anyway mate if you are still talking to me after all that how did you go today did you fish ???..mate we have already postponed our trip to fortescue cause the wind is not going to ease down here right up to monday so far...mate i started my holidays today wouldent you know it....mate the elephant fish have just turned up in the derwent so i have been told buy a reliable source so i will be out after them asap, and i have promised my dad that i will take him to cremorne through the week sometime to target some flathead his favorate fish...anyway mate thats about it from me tonight so i will talk to you again soon mate....brian

Mate i wouldnt stop talking to you just becuase you had just a different opinion mate gee that would be a bit petty mate thats what makes us humans mate having our own opinions geesh mate I wouldnt hold it against you if you wish to keep a mako mate no problem what so ever....You are quite entitled to its like myself mate i would bring home a 15 kg knuckle mate.......Mate loading trucks mate not to bad a job little bit heavy at time loading the trucks and unloading but hey as ya said it puts food on the table.....
Mate i did go fishing this morning and it wasnt a bad day really up at 4.30am and finished fishing about midday for 1 cocky salmon but we were were getting bites but it was a battle bringing the buggers in as we lost them mainly in the surf as it was a full on surf mate......It was quite good fun as it was with some people i also talk to on the net mate and we just had a ball mate just chatting and having a fish we didnt really worry to much about the the fish it was just a great day all round mate but i only just got home an hour ago mate from work got called in for a 2.30pm start so i havent had much rest for the day as i was on my way home from fishing when i got the call in and i was just leaving Victor Harbour which is about 100k out of Adelaide....So i was in a bit of a mad rush to get home and changed out of the fishing cloths and into work mode so i am hell stuffed mate fishing early this morning to an hour ago takes abit out of ya but doesnt matter mate it was a good day out and was lucky enuff to have a fish through the week...
Anyway mate i better go as i am just about falling asleep here at the keyboard mate...
Mate go and chase them elephant fish mate on light gear you will have a ball.....Mate cremorne mate i love flat head fishing down there mate the only thing i dont like is beach luanching but its great to get out there chasing a few crocs mate they will certainly give ya feed down there mate....
so cheers mate looking forward to talking to ya again prolly tommorow night....

gday mick...mate sounds like you sure did have a big day...its great that you got out for a fish mate..surf fishing aye mate i've never had a go at that... as you now mate surf fishing is not that big down here in tas,not as popular as it seems to be over there on the big island...anyway mate the weather still sucks over here but i might cheat a bit tommorow and go down the wharfe in hobart throw the rods in and sit in the car...mate last time i did go to the wharfe i took a tin of cat food and spooned a bit in every now and then it wasent long before i had a school of snottys going mad..they were only small ones so i kept on throwing them back but i had a bit of fun while it lasted.......anyway mate going back a post or 2 you said that you was going to make your own sinkers...mate i made some more today and mate i have got a good tip for ya..the melting pot i was using the other day was a thin bottom pot and it took ages for the lead to melt,so i went to a second hand shop today and brought a small thick bottom one...mate it sure made a lot of differance in melting time...another thing you are going to need is some welding gloves expecially if you are making big snapper leads like i have been making, cause mate after a few pours the mould gets real bloody hot.. anyway mate i think it is a good idea to make your self some cause you will save heaps of money in the long run cause they are not cheap aye and it doesent take long to loose $20 bucks worth of sinkers on a bad day...anyway mate thats about it for me tonight hopefully if i get down the wharfe tommorow i will have something to report to ya tommorow night...ok mate have a good weekend and going on our uasual proformance i will talk to you tommorow night.......brian

Hi Brian
don't know why they dont surf fish down there but when the words out up here mate ya cant find a spot on the beach to park. the spots are mainly east inlet and seven mile beach (yep we have one up here to) at the heads of the duck river. one of the club members was telling me last year they found a blue eye trevalla of 18 pound wash on the beach at seven mile and only dead about 1 hour he reckons. just been given a heap of snapper photos to put on the Circular head sportfishing web site (when i have time) the fish were all caught last year. still not happening at the moment brian but soon, weather blown and rainin like a ba........ so no one really fishin but there is plenty of itchy feet waiting to go, so on the first good day i thing there is going to be about 20 to30 boats headin over. any way i will keep ya posted

Mate this sinker making is fairly easy stuff mate i have made plenty myself in mytime mate...I am actually thinking of making a couple of die cast up mate using green sand and the device i am thinking of making ya wont have to handle hot lead. it just a matter of getting a design drawn then building it......ya see i have had a bit of experience in foundry work mate.... so with that experience mate i should be able to come up with a fang dangled device for sinker moulds....
Brian it was my first time surf fishing mate over here in South oz i did go a couple of times over in tas mate as i know there is quite a few surf beaches down South mate on the neck of bruny is good spot for surf fishing and down south arm way mate....
anyway it has been cold and miserable here the past few days it seems we are copping tassies weather this time.. i was hoping to get the boat out today but shes gale force here mate...anyway i better go mate as the lady of my heart wants to go somewhere tommorow i better hit the sack...

gday mick... mate green sand aye...mate at the risk of sounding like an idiot what the hell is green sand... ???....anyway mate i never went anywere today as the weather was bloody shocking, snowing, bloody windy, and tons of rain..and i have a suspision that you are sending it all the way from adelaide cause thats the way it appears to be coming from...so mate i made some more sinkers today instead this time i made some real big bombs for when the current is strong out on the deeper reefs...i made them in a lenght of aluminium vacum cleaner hose cut into peices... put each peice one by one into the vice and got a swivel and a nail..put the nail through the swivel and rested the nail across the top of the pipe..poured the lead into the pipe so so that the lead filled one end of the swivel and then sliced the alum pipe of with a hack saw and hey presto one chunky big sinker...mate another way i have made them in the past is in potatoes that works allright as well as long as you dont want to take a photo of them...anyway mate i better shut up about sinker before we get lead poisoning ;D...not much else to report on this end mate so i will probibly catch up with you tommorow night mate......brian

gday blaze..mate plaster is something i have never thought about before...can you use the same mold to make more than one sinker or do make a mold for each sinker... ???....mate i am really getting getting sick of this weather i cant beleive that it is happening just when i have a whole week of work...i have been threating to go and do some fishing down the wharfe for the last 2 days so maybe tommorow it will happen cause i dont know how much longer i can hold out for good weather i have worn the concreate out in the car port smoked a billion cigarettes out of bordom ...so i think something is gunna have to give mate either me or the weather...any way mate thanks for the idea talk to you soon hopefully....brian

gday mick..mate i dont know what those kids of mine have done to this computer this time mate but the writeing on the pages has grown about 100 times larger i could read it from the end of the street...unless its something aus fish has done...anyway mate i am very interested in this green sand thing mate it sounds like it could be used to make dive belt weights or differant types of sinkers...where do you get it from mate and how do you use it..... ???......mate i read today about snapper fishing in st vincents gulf and the writer talks of the wreck of a cargo barque called the zanoni which sank in 1867 and is now a historic ship wreck site and holds very large snapper which cannot be caught because it is a protected site...but mate if you could find where it is there is good news because there is another barge which the marine bourd scuttled on purpose to give something back to the anglers a mile due south of the zanoni wreck and suposidly holds some real big snapper aswell...anyway mate just a thought you have probibly heard about it before...anyway mate better get going for now so till next time mate......brian

Gday Brian
Mate greensand is hard to come by i think to the public but is still an option but also when using it can cause a few problems to the health i want to try and stay away from using it if i can.... Plaster of Paris may be the best option to make the moulds with as my idea is on a bigger scale then the moulds you buy from the shop and youwont need clamps to hold it in place hopefully....if i was you brian i would stay clear of greensand as i said it can be harmfull and you have kids mate it can cuase some probs...
Mate practically you could use anything that can stand heat above the boiling point of lead.....Concrete could be another substance you could use mixed with sand....
Mate if you still have that article mate on St vincent i have heard of the wreck you are talking about but i am not sure of where it is does this article have any pics of the area....Mate St vincent gulf is fairly flat with bugger all features unfortunately and alot of the wrecks now have been buried over now which makes it hard to hold snapper..... Most of the snapper that come in the st vincent gulf are generally travellers as there isanything to holdem in th one spot.....The spencer gulf is the best spots for snapper fishing mate as it has much more features....
Another thing about vincent gulf here mate that alot of the seagrss is dying off which is also not helping to sustain fish life......
The next couple of months in the gulf is going to be the best i reckon prolly starting next month throu to december which means i will be doing more night fishing in the gulf as these are the prominent time to catch decent snapper...
Mate but as you said you have given me an option to find out on mate and see if i can find the marking for the wreck you mentioned....
anyway mate i havent got much more to say but this weather is driving me nuts mate cant even get the boat wet....
anyway cheers

Hi all that read this post
Mick, Brian, Jaybee etc
The weather, wet the boat what a joke, cant even wet a line, if they cant get the spiritof tasmania in what hope have i of getting out. Any way enough gripes, i have updated the web site a little, check it all again as there is changes and photo's in most areas the url is http://www.tassie.net.au/~roblazel/
Working on some sponsers soon so if you have any ideas or know of any one get them to drop me a private email
as i said fishin has been non existance to wet to work no spondooly comin in, just spending. picked up a nice little 4 hp jonho for an auxillary the other day. Took it to have it checked and serviced and the outboard tech told me i stole it not brought it, cost $50 the guy desperate for $'s
Brian my plaster of paris sinker moulds are up to three years old, they are really the way to shape lead and very very cheap to make.
any way cheers for now

gday mick...mate there is no pictures of the area where the wreck are located but i will cut the article out of the mag and send it to you as soon as i get a couple more tas fishing reports out of the mercury to put with it...mate i had a idea about how you could find yourself some good wrecks to fish for snapper, have you ever considered going to the maritime museum if you have one there in adelaide...mate places like that usually have detailed maps of wrecks...the one that i told you was sunk one purpose has only been there since 1994 so i think it would stick out like dogs balls on a sounder as it is only in 18 meters of water...the only other thing is mate is i have just read the story again and it is a 27 mile run across from adelaide so unless there is another ramp closer it is prolly to far out anyway...but mate i will send it to ya any way cause its not a bad read...mate i would still thing about looking into where some of these wrecks in the gulf are located because from what you describe there is not many areas there to hold fish so if you could find one it would have to be of benefit...another option mate would be to ring a freindly dive shop in your area....any way mate i went down the wharfe after dinner tonight...no fish to be seen and to bloody cold for me mate so i came home after a couple of hours frozen stiff,,but at least i made an effort i suppose...anyway mate time for bed so i will talk to again soon......brian

Rob I can't wait till i hear you have come back with a Snapper mate from up there Have you given any thought on some night fishing over there in Smithton mate as most of hour good snapper here in the St vincent Gulf is taken through the night....

Gday Brian
Mate we do have a maritime museum over here mate i will have to venture down Another option i have mate is to buy some maps mate which i should do anyway so i can browse at the maps in my own time....Mate i have a feeling where these recks are mate it sounds as if they are over towards ardrosson or stansbury way in the St Vincents gulf mate....and if this is the case mate specially at Stansbury i have somewhere to stay over there and the boat ramp is close by.........Mate I like exploring new ground mate gives me more of a challenge mate to find fish....
Mate the fishing is going to get alot harder for us over here in S.A if the greenies have there way mate they are thinking of closing down the Port River system becuase some of us careless recreational fisherman have left traces behind and nets in this waterway and the dolphins have got caught in these nets...Mate the thing is if they close the Port River off to anglers mate it means that landbased anglers have to find somewhere else to fish as the Port River is a very safe water way where the family can fish unlike the surf beaches we have here in South OZ....
Mate no fish of the wharves hmmmm well i think mate this is the wrong time of year really for the mackeral and snotties to turn up there but hey since they closed the top half of maquarie wharf mate the fishing is pretty well dead there....Mate there was no harm in trying the wharves at any stage as ya just never know what might turn up......
Anyway mate i better run buddy i have to get to work as i have a few trucks to unload & load this arvo prolly wont get home till about 10pm
tonight.
cheers

gday mick...mate you are exactly right mate those wrecks are somewhere off ardrossan in the upper st vincent;s gulf...also mate there is actually a sunken barge there of the same name which is the wreck they are talking about.....mate to make it worse i have been reading more about snapper in s/a so heres another spot to confuse ya abit more...it says closer to adelaide there is another (group) of sunken barges off metropolitan port stanvac also yeilded some huge snapper in the summer of 99 whith the bigest one weight in at 34 pounds, and the average being 24 pounds.....now mate i know what your thinking.. jeusus that was 3 years ago..but mate what i am thinking is if it held big fish back then why wouldnt they return year after year...any way mate i am prolly driving you nuts with all this maybe usless info so i will just cut out all the info i think might be helpfull and send it to you cause the fish photos are good for a look.......mate i am taking my son with me tommorow we are going to have a go at the bream he is only 7 and handels a rod well but like most kids soon gets bored if there not biteing so it will prolly not be a long day but it will be a good day....the weather is coming right from tommorow so come thursday i recon i will attack things in a serious way...........thats about it for tonight mate i will let you know how the bream went tommorow..........brian

Hi all
special thanks to jaybee for the link
mick thanks for the positive feedback
brian i drool over the photo's too, the snapper on the wharf is the only one i have heard of being caught there. I am hearing patchy bits of info that they catch small ones at table cape wynyard about 2 k offshore. before that the boys locally that catch them all were under the believe that they migrated, but maybe not. the guys tagged andreleased mostof what they boated last year so it will be interesting to see wether any tagged fish are hooked this year with tt tags in them. I am about to shoot some nav lights on the tub and spend some nights in the mouth of the duck river and burley the last 3 hours of the tide and the first 3 on the income.I have been hunting a 12m hole out there at low tide( only small they tell me), i believe that they will come in there to feed( more info please) over the years I have caught most of my gummy from here from shore, elephant fish are also caught there, rock cod, salmon etc. also a lot of hectares of oyster lease there. thoughts please. I would love to catch them there as it is a lot closer and can be fished in ALMOST any weathe
cheers all

gday mick..im back i forgot to comment on the greens up your way....mate i cannot beleive how a few idiotic halfwitted pigs can and will eventually ruin this sport we love so much...mate i am not a great lover of greens despite the fact that i agree we must do something about the sh-t we are throwing in the water and beleive me mate i have seen it down there with my own eyes...the trouble is mate the people who give us this bad reputation with the greener side of the population are not fisherman in the true sence of the word but to those who dont fish it is impossibe for them to tell us apart...mate you and i can spot a bad fisherman from a mile away usually from the trail of rubbish he is leaving behind.....mate i dont have an answer to the problem but we must distance ourselves from these halfwitts before it is to late and they destroy our sport forever.........brian

gday rob..i had a idea that might be helpfull...last time i was up at stanely i thought about climbing up to the top of the nut but never got around to it..mate what i am saying is if you waited for a day when the water was clear and no wind you would be suprised what you could see from the top..if it is anything like i saw driving down into boat harbour i could see the patches of rock for miles out to sea when i was coming down the hill...if you saw anything interesting you could take a bit of a mental bearing and then try to find it on your sounder if you got one... anyway mate it might work who knows............brian

Mate i know where the Port Stanvac barges are mate Fished them a couple of times for no results mate.....Mate the information your giving me can be very useful to me mate i never knock back a bit of information doesnt matter how useless it seems to be mate as it can come in handy mate...Mate there is a boat ramp at ardrosson mate so i might check it out soon enuff mate....
But getting back to the Snapper down of Stanvac mate they dont hold snapper there regular but there is 2 grounds called the barges mate the one you mentioned and there is a nother one approx about 10k out from glenelg....Mate What happens here in the St vincent gulf is that the snapper just keep on moving and ya just gotta be there at the right time in a sense Mate i will be doing a fair bit of snapper fishing in the next few months mate So hopefully the snapper turn up mate...
Mate bream fishing with the son mate sounds great mate i am sure you will have a ball and i hope ya get a few thumpers mate......if not you will just enjoy it just the same becuase ya fishing with ya son....
Anyway brian i better go mate i reckon i will have another big day loading and unloading trucks tommorow mate....
Anyway cheers
Mick
Gday Rob
Mate you want some thoughts on Snapper fishing mate well mate i am prepared to help ya out mate....
mate this hole ya talking about mate should hold snapper if they are there....the thing is you will have to burley pretty good...Also mate dont put all ya baits to the bottom the reason why i say this is becuase snapper will feed on top and around middle water.....What i tend to do when snapper fishing is have a bait on the bottom this is where most of ya ruggers will be mate...Now with the second rod what i would be doing is to float a bait down the berley trail mate Same as what you would be doing if you are cubing for yellowfin tuna rob if you have ever seen cubing before...When putting a floating bait down just peel the line of the reel by hand wait till it goes taught then peel off more line until you think you have put enuff line out....
Now Rob Ya bait and berley is the most important part of catching snapper i believe...A big dont and i stress is dont what ever ya do put snapper out for berley or bait this will soon put off snapper you intend to catch if you do put out snapper for bait then ya might as well go home....
Best baits would be live bait of coarse which can be in small squid and tommy ruff.....
other baits Pilchards squid(best if caught in the same trip) mullet.....
Rob your best results will be of the night i would imagine tides mate that can vary on what the current and tide is actually doing mate this will have to be a trial and error thing for you....
Mate if there is anything ya wanna know mate just give me ahoy i would be more then happy to help you out with some advice mate......
anyway cheers

gday mick...mate i run out of internet the other night so its been awhile since we have chatted...hows the fishing going mate have you been ???....any way mate the son (cody) and i went looking for some bream on wensday and didnt have any luck i recon the river has a bit much fresh water in it at the moment, cause i tried all the usual spots still no good....not to be outdone mate i took me dad down to pirates bay yesterday and we caught a nice feed of flatthead and perch no kingies about tho, but they shoudent be far away...mate the weather is great down here at the moment so daniel and me are off down to tasman in the morning to try for some trumpeter...mate so as you can see i am keen to make up a bit of lost ground from early in the week...mate i just remembered i must ring the pig and get a bit of an idea of him as to what he recons about this coming season so we can get the grand plan underway......any way mate i will try and track him down prolly sunday....mate thats about it for tonight but hopefully i will have heeps to tell you tommorow night after our trip tommorow....got a 5 oclock start in the morning mate so i better git going for now .........brian

Mate sorry to hear ya didnt get a few bream mate...I know what ya mean mate when there is a bit to much fresh really makes it hard to get a bait to where the salt is specially if there is no weight used on the line..But still mate you had quality time with your son mate.....
Flatties mate they are far and few over here in South Oz mate i have caught a couple over here not bad size either but unfortunately its mainly kg whiting and snapper and crabs here in Adelaide from the boat and landbased is mainly salmon mullet and bream......
Mate i havent been out fishing for well over a week and a bit my last day out was the trip surf fishing mate....

gday mick...well mate my holiday has come to an end..i start back to work tommorow with a 4 oclock out of bed for a 5 oclock start....anyway mate thats great value at the drivin over there.mate i dont know why they dont start one back up over here....mate me and joanne went to see the crocodile hunter the other day and i dont know what i think about it..i supose it was allright thou....mate a couple of things i ment to tell you last night was we were pretty lucky satarday cause i got a phone call last night from a bloke i know and he asked me how we went with the stripies cause i didnt know at the time but the 2 other boats that were down at tasman with us sat were mates of his and one of them must have known me...cause he rang me up to tell me that neither of the other 2 boats caught any trumpeter...so we must be doing something right to get the 6 we caught...still cant find none of them 20kg ones thou mate but i will keep trying...i suppose its just like you trying to find big snapper we just have to keep learning and spending the hours on the water if we want to get one..... another thing that happened was after daniel dropped me of at the ramp to get the car was he went to go out for a blast across the bay and he threw the throttle hard down and spun the bush in the prop so it would only drive in idle....mate im am real glad that it didnt happen down at tasman it could have been a bit interesting....any way better soon get to bed so i will catch ya latter mate....brian

Mate sounds like on Saturday When you guys where out no one was getting them except for you guys mate...Mate must have been the baits you guys where using and the methods that you were using.....or ya just could have been over good drop of or something.....
Mate you guys sound rather lucky really with the boat mate i tell ya whatbreaking down at tasman wouldnr be a good thing good haul back to fortesque mate if ya had to paddle ya way back....But at least you guys are safe...
Mate i bet today was hard for ya back at the grindstone mate but really at least ya had great holiday really with the son and a few trips out fishing mate more then what i have done i was very very dissapointed really becuase the weather here in S.A is pretty bad specially yesterday mate... Apperently over in port lincoln around tumby bay a few boats lost the moorings and big dust storms mate and also down towards victor harbour-Cape jervis way we had our first bush fires for the season mate....as the winds where pretty strong mate i thought at one stage that i would have to tie the boat down to solid ground....Also the temps over here in S.A have been around 30 degrees mate for the past 2 day but thank goodness mate its not like it today buddy...not really looking forward to summer mate as we usually get temps around the 40 degree mark for 3-4weeks straight mate working in temps like that is a bloody killer i can tell ya but mate at least the fishing will be good mate as i plan to do a few good trips in the next couple of months....
anyway mate ibetter go and get ready for work mate just got the call for a 2:30 start prolly finish around 7:30-8:30pm tonight....

gday mick..mate i recon you could be right about our luck on sat i think it was a bit of everything you just mentioned, expecially the bait bit...mate we have found that these stripies like real fresh baits i was running a 5 hook rig on sat and done a bit of experimenting with different baits and found that they always took the gurnard the fresher the better....mate we would have been allright if we broke down at tasman as danial has a auxillary which we have never used as yet but it is real assuring knowing its there if we ever need it.....mate i heard today that over there on the big island somewhere you;s had winds that gusted to 200 kph :o mate i sure hope it slows down before it gets here...mate i just cant work this weather over here out its crazy cause we had a 28 deg day here yesterday i was in the tank top at 10 oclock...but on the news tonight they have forcast snow down to 700 meters tonight...anyway mate that about it for me tonight got get some sleep even thou it seems like i just got home........brian.

Mate i always believe in fresh baits i think the fresher the better....but in the end i have to get rid of the pipi's out of my freezer mate its chockas full of pipi's and a few old blocks of pillies in there as well but i will now be using them for berley....
Mate yeah it has been pretty strong here on mainland as i said over towards port lincoln a few boats lost the moorings and that but she has calmed down a bit and i might just duck out for a couple of hours latr in the week if the wind eases right of as this will turn on the kg whiting mate.....
Mate 28 degrees for tassie this time of year mate that would have to be nearly a record temp...but it doesnt surrise me mate that there will be snow on those hills mate.....
Mate its good to hear that there was an aux motor mate how often does Daniel run the Aux as it should be given a run quite regular as ya dont wanna be out there and find that the aux wont start.......

We also use gents mate for catching garfish and tommyruff......Mate most of the tackle shops here sell livebait except for livefish....
Mate i hope this weather eases before the weekend as on Sunday i am going out on a chartertrip out of glenelg Westbeach area even thou this is the area i genrally fish with my boat but i am going with a few people i have met of the net and is more of a learning curve excercise and to see if i can steel some gps marks......
Mate the snapper should be starting to run here in the gulf so hopefully when this wind eases of i will be getting out chasing a few snapper mate before i head over to port hughes...
Mate i better go as i stil have to get ready for work so i will talk to ya later mate.....

Gday Brian
Mate the weather is not looking good here either brian mate the wind picked up fairly strong but hopefully by thie time the weekend gets here it will have settled down a fair bit...
Mate i know this site is run by alot of qld guys and sportsfish australia is practically all NSW and fishnet well they are for the Victorians mate....So its not so common that you find a few tasmanians to hook up with or South Australians mate...I am kind of lucky in a sense as south Australia has 3 sites with forums mate that i frequent mate which isnt to bad and its these sites in which i have met some great guys....
Mate I may need ya to do me a favour there is a guy here in South Australia who has just landed a job in hobart and is quite cluey i believe in fish aquaculture but the favour is if i have a word with this chap would you be prepared to show him some great fishing locations such as trout and whatever mate and if agrees to this i will get him to really help you out on Snapper fishing....Mate i know this is a big ask mate but as i know it has hard to find your way around when ya new to a state and you have to make friends.....Mate i dont want you to feel obligated to do this as i havent mentioned anything to this guy what i have mentioned to you....
Mate maggots seriously mate i felt the same way as you mate leave them to the insane but i tell ya what mate they are dynamite mate for some fish mate specially with garfish mate as if you get up to st helens mate they have garfish up there mate you get a few maggots mate as ya secret weapon mate and give ya mates crappy old bait you will win every single time and i aint kidding ya....MAte maggots are rather clean bait mate mind you i dont put them in my mouth like some people do........But i tell ya what the missus hates it when i say i am going after garfish mate becuase i always bring home the maggots and place in the fridge mate.....
Mate we will get to fish mate i can garantee ya there mate as i made a promise to myself that i will try and get back to tassie every 2 years if possible...mate I might have a bit of a surprise to tell ya i may be making 2 trips to tassie with in the next 12 months and 1 may be in about 2 months time but that ones not certain yet mate...As i think my father is going to be paying for me and my fiance to come over for christmas mate as it will be on his frequent flyer points.....but as i said dont hold ya breath onthat one so who knows we may just have to catch up for a drink and a fish as well mate if i get over there at chrissy...
anyway mate i will talk to ya later as its getting late here
cheers

gday mick...mate what a day we have had over here...the snow came down last night and settled to the 100 meter mark.....mate there were reports of snow starting to settle at midway point...mate there's no problem helping out that bloke if he is a mate of yours just let me know when he is coming over mate and i will do what ever i can for him......mate it will be great if you do come over soon but dont expect to come all the way over here without us going fishing for a couple a hours mate cause i will be puting the pressure right on ya ;D...anyway mate seriosly if you do come over and you have a bit of time one day you wouldent need to worry about any fishing gear as i would have enought to keep us out of trouble...other than that mate just to meet up and have a chatt would be great and mate as far as a drink goes i havent had a beer for a couple of years cause of my diabeties and the fact that i used to like it a bit more than the average man, but mate if you dont mind drinkin with a diet coke man that would be great also... mate i hope that everything comes together i had better go for now mate as i am a bit tired tonight but at least it friday tommorow...cheers mate.....brian

hi brian
notice you mention the old diabetics a bit, yep same here. weather seams like it might be inproving a bit up here. got a club day sat andsat evening, surf fishing chasing a few gummysand maybe an elephant fish. finally got lights on the old tub so i am about to start some night fishin to see if i can can't raise my first snapper. the whitebait are moving up and there is plenty of squid about. told of a spot today that has scollops gummy and a 22lb snapper last year(mick does this sound like a place snapper would normally habitat, or is it may be a one of) anyway starting to smile with the weather inproving. I have just added a small message board to the web sit and a chat room, hoping to get local gurus to maybe come into chat once a month( just working on that at the monent)
cheers blaze
just a thought brian, how do you get on in the bush in the wind we have been havin (bloody dangerous eh)

Gday Rob
Mate I would shore give it ago mate as it sounds like it has produced Snapper before i cant see no reason why it shouldnt hold more snapper mate...... Mate in a previous post i remember you saying you had one scream run but you actually lost the fish i actually think that you have had a taste of a snapper run just by the way you described it in a previous post of yours.....Mate the thing is with Snapper you have to put the time in and try the same spot over and over try new methods on this spot.....Most guys i think get sick of snapper fishing becuase it can be slow going mate even here in South Australia mate snapper can be hard to catch and ya really have to spend the time finding them.....Rob dont be scare to go out in a bit of a chop mate i think you may find in a nor/eastly wind snapper tend to bight more often and the believe or not you have more chances of catching a snapper ina choppy conditions....but play it safe thou.....
Rob try this spot that guy told you about during the day first mate spend some time sounding around the area and look for some good drop offs or reef formation or anything that looks like it will hold a fish....remember dont anchor right over the spot put a marker buoy down over the spot drift for a minute just to see which way ya going to drift...then once gathered that out just move away from the marker buoy and berley up a bit and float a pilly down the trail mate....Mate if there is squid about mate i reckon you may just start to find a snapper now mate catch a few squid mate and use them as bait.....
Mate dont move off ya spot at all becuase there is no point to berlying up if ya gonna leave in the first hour...
mate good luck with it i would like to know how you get on with this spot as far as features around this spot Mate.....
cheers

Mate did i get out for a fish mate i certainly did mate....I had a very good day out yesterday we headed out towards the goanna's mate where i had some good reports of snapper lirking about mate with a baby white pointer of 15 foot lrking about the area......Anyway mate we ended up catching about a dozen KG whiting between us alot of them had to be put back as they where undersize....
Also when we Arrived at the ramp yesterday morning mate we had fisheries officers come and check over my boat to check wether we had all the gear required mate which i did mate but the boat before us was made to go and buy life jackets and everything mate if he wanted to head out......but i think it is great to see fisheries and that do there job....
Mate i am also out fishing today mate out on a charter with some guys i have met of the internet so should be a great day fishing......
Anyway mate i havent got much more to report on mate so i will chat with ya later.

gday mick...bad luck mate that you didnt get any snapper...but at least you got out mate....15ft aye mate i sure hope you plan on taking a camera on any future trips you never know mate you just might get lucky....mate it sure is good to see that there is some one out there that is trying to save idiots from themself..it is hard to believe that after all the recent drownings and publicity that there are still those who will put themselfs and there crew in danger...mate i overherd a conversation the other day this bloke(moron) was telling this other bloke that he sold his boat and all his fishing gear when life jackets become compulsary here in tasmania cause he said im not wearing one of those bloody things ever..and then in the same conversation was saying how they almost tiped there boat arse over head at dodges ferry one day...what a moron...anyway mate thats only my opinion...mate i hope you had a great day today on your charter and i am looking forward to hearing about it...so until then mate i had better go cause its getting a bit late and its bloody monday almost again...cheers mate....brian

Gday Brian
Mate i may not have got any snapper on Saturday mate but sunday on the charte mate we had a ball mate we struck a few minior problems in the morning mate which wasnt the skippers fault it was his other boat that cuased the hassle as this guy has 2 charter boats to worry about and the other boat ran out of fuel which shouldnt have happend as i clearly heard my charter captain say fuel up before heading to the grounds in which he didnt.....
But anyway We got out to the grounds in the end mate i ended up with a baby pinky mate(snapper) then about half an hour later managed a rugger which weas pushing legal (bummer) anyway we had this idiot upset the bit for the knuckles mate so the skipper had decided t move off to a nother location and provided us with heap of kg whiting and leather jacket and we saw a great display of dolphins leaping clean out of the water attack each other mate....Great day in the end mate...the funny thing was Mate with charter guide I found out I actaully have had a few quites ones with him on new years eve and i know his father fairly well Small world really
Anyway mate as i said we had agreat day none the less.....I aslo had a talk with him about the spots you have had a look at here in South Oz and got his thoughts he reckons there is a big chance of some great catches amongst the wrecks mate and has given me some gps marks which i cant give out.....
anyway mate look forward to chatting with again soon
Cheers

gday mick...great stuff mate sounds like you had a great day in the end..maybe mate the big snapper havent arrived in the gulf yet or are they supossed to be there all year round ???mate that would have been a sight to see those dolphins attacking each other..mate i have never heard of that before....mate its great that you got those gps marks of the skipper hopefully they pay off for you...mate i have also been doing abit more research for you..and this time mate i have come up with a name of an artificial reef some where in the vincents gulf near the ardrossan area made up of of old car bodies called Aggro's reef that still produces big snapper mate and this info is only 2 years old...mate i am going to send all this info to ya some time this week in the mail..all of the info mate is out of fishing mag and they maybe some use to you if you can decode it mate as it is no use me try to tell you about it as i have no idea of the size of the area they are talking about.....anyway mate i might just get of the putter now and start organizing it right now...... so talk to you again soon mate.........brian

Mate yes indeed i did have a great day mate i learnt heaps out there on Sunday mate....i am thinking of giving it a whirl sometime this weekend if i get the chance mate......
Mate i have heard of the Aggro's mate and the do hold snapper but in the gulf of St Vincent they dont hang around all year for some reason......The other gulf spencer ya can pretty well target them all year round....
Mate see dolphins attacking each other i have seen it 3-4 times now and its been in the past 12 months that i have seen it.....But this was the best show of it all mate you would be thinking you were at sea world in Queensland....
Mate that information ya sending over mate i am really looking forward to it mate and trying it out but i also think it should be a good excuse for you to come and have ago at them mate....Well maybe 1 day mate.....
Mate i reckon it will be a bumper of year for the snapper mate with in the next coming weeks mate i will be targetting snapper with every oppurtunity that comes by mate...So if i aint here posting mate i will be out chasing snapper mate for the next couple of months mate......

gday jaybee..mate they sure are gurnard they are every where around the areas that we fish down here in tas...mate they are regarded as a nuisance by most tassie fisherman as they like the same sort of areas that the stripped trumpeter live in...mate in a average day fishing for trumpeter we would prolly throw back over a hundred of these fish mate thats how thick they are down here...however mate they like you say are a great eating fish so we usually keep a few to take home...any way mate thanks for the post and talk to ya again soon mate ......brian

gday mick...mate sounds like a great trip you have planned for the weekend...hope the weather improves....mate live bait clips ???...never heard of those mate how do they work ???...mate you say we should target those snapper and you are right...daniel and me talked about it a lot on satarday and have decided to hopefully fish in the king fish classic which i think is only a couple of months away...we thought we might leave it till then and hopefully we might be able to learn something from watching other fishos because i think that there will be some fishing for snapper as well as kingfish...mate speaking of king fish i will be posting that info on my way to work in the morning and i have put a article in there about a place over there were there are supposed to be some moster king fish that turn up around this time of the year called coffin bay...mate you can read it for your self the article is was in the modern fishing mag in year 2000 so it may still be reliable...mate the report in sundays paper said that there were some large flathead caught in the marion bay area last week so i am tossing around the idea of chasing some of them on sat instead of going after the trumpeter..anyway mate i will make up my mind through the week... there seems to be something about the stripies that has me going back down each weekend... mate i think that it may be because they are harder to catch than your average bottom fish..so mate i am looking forward to snapper fishing as i think it too will be a worth while challange...anyway mate i better go for now look after yourself and talk to ya soon.....brian

Mate kingfish over here mate is really taking of big time reports are pretty well spot on but the kingfish usually show up around july august at port augusta mate...coffin bay is further then melbourne mate believe it or not its prolly about 9-10 hour drive to get there port lincoln is about the same distance as adelaide to melbourne......if that gives you how far away coffin bay is mate......but i do intend on getting over that way one day for a week or so.....
Mate i know what ya mean witha bit of a challenge mate i think thats part of the angling game for me trying to catch a good fish like stripie mate but at least trying for them ya have a line in the water.....

gday mick...mate i keep on forgeting that that is a big place you live in over there...mate as you know you can drive all most to any end of tassie in about 3-4 hours...mate i dont think i would like to live over there as i think the driving distances would make me go nuts cause im one of those people mate that always wants to know whats around the corner if you know what i mean...any way mate iv'e been a bit quiet on the net lately...i have been burning the candle at both ends a bit lately because of work...... mate i remember now about the trip you are going on the weekend is the one were you might get to take the boat offshore a bit....mate we have a bit of n-east...to... s-east wind forcast for sat at this stage down here so that might cause a re think of our plans...but mate i will be keeping my fingers crossed that your trip is a smooth one....mate you should get that mail tommorow so you will have something to read for a little while when you get time....mate im starting to get itchy feet cause its only 4 weeks to the start of the cray season...we will be down at taroona on opening morning mate and hope fully we will be home by lunch time with our bag limit if last season is any thing to go by.....well mate gotta go now so i will hopefully check you out tommorow night if ya about.........brian

Mate Things are looking promising for local fishing in the next few weeks i have had some great reports come in from the tapley shoals mate which is at edithberg on the york penisula, that there has been a good steady supply of 25 pound Snapper heading toward my local fishing area.....
The bloke i was talking to about this is fairly reliable but he had to head back in due to weather and he got sick of a small white trying to steal snapper that he caught....

I only manged to get out 1 day mate Which was on Saturday as the wind picked up on sunday and today so only got the one day in but i managed to catch a couple of decent snapper no big knuckles amongst them my biggest snapper i got on saturday was around 9 pound mate which was on a pilchard mate....and my 6 pounder i got on tommy ruff mate.....The 9 pounder i cuaght duringdaylight and the 6 pounder was caught throu the night....
I actually caught the 9 pounder at the steamers which is situated 30 klm offshore from port hughes... and the 6 pounder i got was from the "middle bank" which is situated about 10k offshore from walleroo mate....
I also got a pick of the 9 pounder mate which was the only fish that i took a pic of mate as during the night session i didnt actually take the camera with me....so as soon as i get the pics developed mate i will get a pic emailed to ya mate...
I also got a bait slammed on the way down which was a big huge hit mate and which i reckon would have been a good decent knuckle mate but i will never know mate as i ost the fish before i even realised.
Also mate i recieved the information on friday which i havent had much chance of reading yet so thanks mate i really appreciate it.....
Anyway mate i better go as i am hel tired mate as the drive back to day was a bit of prick mate as i got cuaght in a 10 km traffic jam mate on a highway....mate count yaself lucky mate that tassie only gets a 500 metre traffic jamat best lmao......but anyway mate as i said i better go and hit the sack so i will catch up with ya soon mate....

Gday Blaze
Mate have you been out there trying for them mate...15kg mate thats pretty good fish mate that would be close to a 30 pound fish...
Mate at the moment here in South oz down at edithberg they are getting snapper that are around the 20-30pound mark quite regluar of late...
Mate another trick i have recently learnt is get there well before the high tide changes mate this can be a crucial time for some big nobbies to show up....
Last weekend i reckon i lost a good fish as my bait was on the way to the bottom which i was fishing around 10 metres of water....and mind you i was 30k out to sea but thats the gulf for ya.....
anyway good to hear ya reports blaze....Also have you heard anything about estuary perch from the arthurs river of late
cheers

Hi mick
the snapper caught on thursday were 15kg and 10kg, but appently somebody else got 6 the day before but not as big. I am going to try in the mouth of the river in the morning high tide 6am leaving at three am, 5 minute run to the spot i think they are and i am hoping every body else is runnung over the top on the way to the petrels, about 40min run. I would have thought 2 hours before and 2 hours after low tide would have been better mick than the high tide (less water) just a thought. a group of 6 hardcore anglers come over from vic recently just to fish the arther river for estuary perch, they fished hard for a week with little results, but they are all coming back later as they think they were to early. I will see if i can get a proper report for you mick.

gday mick and blaze.....im finally back on line at long last...mick i wrote ya a short note the other day to let ya know why i havent been around but you prolly wont get it till monday...but anyway it turned out that there was nothing wrong with the computer after 3 days at the repairers it turned out to be the bloody phone line cord....anyway sounds like you had a good time with the snapper mick 9 pound mate is a good fish in any case...daniel and me went to cremorne last satarday and didnt go to well the flatties werent bitting at all...we mannaged a few salmon spinning in the canal and had a bit of fun with them on some real light rods....mick i was just thinking about that fish that you missed do you think that it was a snapper or might it have been a big king fish i suppose you will never know..anyway mate its things like that that keep us going back for more aye...mate i wont be doing any fishing this weekend but you can be sure that i will be going next week...mate i also put my phone number on that note i sent ya the other day in case you ever want to ring cause i suppose when you come over either for the tuna season or for holiday like you mentioned it will be a lot easyier to organise a trip on the phone...any way mate i hope everything is well for you over there and hope to talk to you soon mate.......brian
blaze sounds like things are hotting up up there mate i will soon have to start and get a plan to get up and hopefully catch up with you...hope you caught some on the weekend mate...good to hear from you mate and thanks for the report....hope to talk again soon mate....brian

Gday Brian
Mate i was wondering why ya havent been replying mate..i was actually anticapating of good catches of fish mate...
Anyway mate going back to my trip last weekend when i got that 9 pounder mate mind you that 9 pounder is still only a rugger mate.....anyway i dont think it was a kingy mate as the bite gave a tell tale sign of being a snapper but i still aint sure mate and i will never know mate...
anyway mate cremorne chasing flatties well you should have picked up a nice feed from there mate i had always picked up a good feed from cremorne.....Anyway at least ya had some fun on the salmon trout mate......
well i never got out this weekend either mate i spent most of today getttig my brakes done on my car and yesterday getting the boat trailer brakes done as well so i couldnt afford to put the boat in the drink but i had plans to go tommorow(being sunday)but the wether has come in bad once again so ends in a fishless trip once again.....
anyway mate i have read all the info ya sent me mate and just about read it again as i like to read them a few times as there is always useful little tips to use....
anyway mate i better go and get some bueaty sleep so i will catch up with ya later mate
Mick
Gday Blaze
Mate really different areas different feeding patterns really mate its just a matter of finding the right time that the fish are on... i have just found that a couple of hours before the turn of high tide to be the better as it brings most fish in to feed of the reefs....but i would say fishing the low tide would also be a prime time for around ledges or drop offs mate as alot of bait fish will be trying to find deeper water so this would be a good choice for the drop offs mate....
anyway cheers

Hi all
headed out at 3 am, fairly choppy in the little 4.1, had trouble holding anchor where i wanted, northeast wind about 20 to 30 and increasing, decided when daylight arrived we would relocate. then the shi.... happened. started the old evy and warming it up while pulling the pick and it died in the ars.. , no spark. I then through the johno on to head homeand that would'nt bloody run either( just back from dealer, serviced and checked and i think it has a fuel prob, not bad fuel either, fur will fly on monday) so got draged home by a club member heading to the petrels. the long and short of the trip is that at one point i had the drag right off and went to check and had nearly been spooled (gummy i reckon) and at this point i think bloody expensive.

gday mick...things were a bit rough over here in tas today rain rain and more rain so i am glad i didnt have any thing planned...mate i stayed home today and watched the great race and what a great race it was if you are a holden fan like myself....anyway mate getting back to fishing the report in the paper today sounds promising for next weekend with reports of trumpeter to 10 kg and the usuall perch and some arrow squid as an added bonus down at the peninsula...mate i was interested in the question that you had to blaze about estuary perch mate is this some new speices that i havent heard of before or are they known by another name ??? anyway mate better go for now talk to ya soon mate........brian
gday blaze.....mate not the sort of trip that any one would like to have for sure.....mate it sounds a bit stange that both motors let you down...mate over the years i have had my fair share of trouble with motors and one thing that i have learnt is that motors that are normally reliable and break down for no reason..is that 98 percent of the time it is always fuel related..1 percent of the time it is spark...and the other 1 percent of the time it was something i did wrong....mate just a thought did you check that the fuel bulb was firm to squeeze as i got caught with that one a few years ago and had to keep primeing one particular motor all the way back to shore...anyway mate it could be something that you find hopefully wont be too costly...better go for now mate work tommorow @##*! and didnt wet a line all weekend i am going to be a crabby boy at work this week...cheers mate....brian

Mate i think the weather stinks mate i may have to try getting out midweek if i can mate as the wind here in South Australia is shocking mate...went for a drive to the the boat ramp and only surfer to be seen surfing into the ramp and the ramp is surrounded by a breakwall so i wouldnt have liked to try luaunching mate she was a shocker i actually should have taken the camera with me but as it was just went for a drive to the local ramp just to see what i was missing mate and dreaming of a 30 pound snapper mate...
Anyway mate Estury Perch was actually stumbled accross a few years vack in the arthur river prolly back in 1995 or near that year anyway....Fisheries was called in and they cuaght about a halfdozen or so and took them to therebreeding tanks down toroona mate...anyway i don't much about them in Tassie as you know they werent a common species caught in Tassie and as i have someone i know heading to tassie soon is wanting to try and catch a estuary perch......
Also i have to ask a favour would you be able to find out which lake(s) hold tiger trout as i am to believe there is a couple of lakes that have tiger trout in them.....you may have to ring inland fisheries up or even go and have a word withthe boys in at the fishing connection or where ever you get your tackle.....
Mate it wasnt a bad race really up there at bathurst i say well done to holden as i dont mind the holdens...
as there wasnt really much else on today....
Anyway mate i havent got much to report on tonight so i will catch ya later
cheers
Mick
Gday Rob
Mate sorry to hear ya had motor probs mate....nothing worse in getting out there and finding out ya motors wont work....
It was good that you had some guys out there from ya club to give ya hand mate or else ya may have drifted all the way over here to S.A mate where i would then have to teach ya snapper fishing mate...but i do hope ya get the motor all sorted out mate...
anyway its a pitty ya didnt pick up a few fish mate for that trouble....
Anyway cheers

gday mick...mate i know what you mean about the weather mate it is driving me nuts as well...hopefully mate things will settle down here in tas as soon as we get show day out of the way cause as you know mate it always happens down here every year about this time...anyway mate i am still abit stumped about these perch you mentioned are they comon in mainland waters mate as i cant seem to find anything in any of my books about them ???...mate as far as the tiger trout go i have seen them at the salmon ponds and i was under the impession that they havent yet released them into any lakes as yet..but i may well be wrong mate as i have been a bit out of touch with the trout scene the last couple of years..i will ask daniel mate as he is still up to date on the trout fishing and if he doesent know mate he will find out for me and i will get back to you asap....well mate that it for me tonight looking forward to seeing that photo of your snapper mate when you get the film developed...i will also have to finish that film of mine mate so as i can post a few also....cheers mate..........brian

Hi Brian and mick Jaybee etc
outboard mechanic forgiven on the small motor seems the fuel pump diaphram may have streched after sitting dry for so long. the 70 evi done the black box, took 30 sec with a multi meter to test, new one $290 fitted tommow, over night from melbourne. so the guys at burnie marine are quick to get ya back on the water.so i have a bit of time off work at the moment so thursday i will give it another shot for the old snapper
cheers blaze
ps brian i will see if the boys scored over the weekend, i was a bit pi...., they seem to be hotting up a bit, i would love to find them in the river as its not far away, 5 min, i think every body goes over ther top of them
any

Gday Brian Just got back from the pub mate so forgive me if my post sounds out of wack mate....
Anyway mate estery perch i think they are called a few things mate... if my memeory serves me right an estuary perch could be a callop or yellowbelly i think... i may have to do a bit more research into the the estuary perch mate...
Mate tiger trout i also thought that the the inland fisheries havent released them into any lakes or rivers yet... just someone mentioned to me the other day that they are in 2 alpine lakes mate.....I just want some clarification as to wether they have been been placed into sme lakes....
anyway mate i reckon it will be awhile before i get those snapper pics done mate but then again next sunday i am targetting snapper so i may get a decent one this time......then i may take the camera as well just to waste some pics anyway..
Mate i better go as i have been on the drink with the murdoch clan mate and i feel like a i drank a liquer shop out mate or the cascade brewery out mate.....As mr murdoch wouldnt let me buy my own drinks he had to pay for them.....
anyway until next time mate
cheers
Mick
Gday Rob
Mate its good to hear that there was only minor probs with the boat mate.....The one thing i do mate when my boat doesnt go in the water for awhile id to run the moter every 2 weeks...Mind you it is costly here in South oz to do it as we have to pay for water..but i tow it down to the ramp most times and do it if i know i am not going to use the boat for awhile...
Anyway Rob mate i wish all the best for thursday or whenever it is your going out for snapper.....Mate i hope ya do pick up a good one....Just remember have a bait on the bottom and drop an unweighted bait down as well mate which i think the unweighted one will do better if the snapper are around as the nobbies mate hang around anywhere between bottom and midwater.....
anyway blaze i better go mate as i have had a few sherbets tonight so i will catch ya later mate

g'day oz,blaze n devil
Mate i think the weather stinks we seem to be getting it everywhere at present. Havent been on the water in nearly a month now :( i'm a firm beleiver that while the boat is sitting idle is when the damage is done to the motor so i run it at least once a week for at least 10 minutes..but its still not like being on the water. Price sounds pretty reasonable for the part tho. Hey if u get a chance to take a photo of a 30lb plus knucke as you call em would love to have a look .. i reckon they would look like 44 gal drums. :)
cheers.

gday mick...mate i am on to that tiger trout buisness for you..mate i ran daniel tonight and he said that as far as he knows there is only only 2 places in the state were it is possible to catch one....the first is a place called( pet reservior) which is up north some where he is going to tell me on the weekend exactly were it is....mate and the other place where he has actually caught one himself is in the plenty river behind the salmon ponds itself...aparently they had some excape a few years back and they are in there with the brook and rainbow and browns that also excape from time to time....any way mate i will keep on to it for ya better go for now mate....brian...
gday jaybee... blaze- mate at least it was one of those problems that was easy fixed hopefully mate you will be right now so you can get down to some good fishing..mate i think that you are spot on when you say that the other may be running over the best spots..mate i have found this on more than one occation the other week mate we ran down to tasman chasing trumpeter... on the way back home we stopped just out of fortescue and had a bit of a go and caught fish as good as we did at tasman...the same goes for the crays mate every one goes for miles chasing them we uasually drive about 5 min from the ramp and get our bag and are back in the boat while the others are still thinking about it...any way mate gotta go talk to ya soon mate....brian

cheers matei really do appreciate it mate as in my time of trout fishing i have never come accross the tiger trout in the wild only seen them at salmon ponds..
Anyway Brian i am actually thinking of relocating myself in the next possible 12 months to 2 years... i am thinking of returning back to tassie mate to live for awhile...but will mean i have to leave the snapper behind with me mate unless i can thinkof dragging a big huge net of 30 pounders down to the derwent river...this is not certain yet as i have to talk it over with the lady ofthe house mate....so don't get to excited mate yet as i have to work out what i am going to do with my house here wether i rent it out or sell it as i will most likey return to south oz as my house now would be worth around 160,000 and if i sold it and came back to south oz it would cost me a fortune....Also i would have to wrry about employment for me and the lady...and finding a house to rent over there or wether i buy over in tasmania.... but still unsure mate.....i reckon i may have more of an idea later next year....
Anyway brian i dont have much to say mate so i better go.....
cheers

Gday Jaybee
Mate i am hoping to get out this sunday on a charter trip mate to the tapley shoals and the average knuckle they are getting is around 20 pound a mate went out a week and half ago and got a 26 pound knuckle so soon as i see a pic of his 26 pounder i will post it up for you to have a look at jaybee....May encourage ya to come down to south Oz mate....Anyway i plan to take the camera with me as there is spose to be a baby white pointer of 15ft travelling with this school of knuckles so hopefully a few pics will be taken...

Mate i had some shocking news last last night mate about the bali bombing my sisters boyfriend cousin was killed in the bali bombing mate... which i actually new of him as i new his father pretty well...anyway the chap who was killed was tim hawkins who was a brother to Steve Hawkins jr Who won gold in the double skulls at the barcelona games i think it was back in 86......I actually rowed with these chaps at lindisfarne rowing club which there father got me into the sport of rowing....Anyway the father Stephen hawkins senior did a lot for me when i was younger mind you he would do anything for anyone and now he has lost a son he treasured so much.....
Anyway mate no problems about last night mate we all get net problems once and awhile...
Mate i tell ya what ya pretty keen on getting me back into tassie mate...But i am still thinking seriously about it mate but it all boils down to the lady mate....but if i do come over mate i would welcome you as a fishing partner i my bath tub....Which i just have named my boat after 2 years of having it it is now called Ozdevil....Anyway mate i do intend on moving back to tassie one day it might be soon as i said but if it is not soon you can rest assured i wil be back to tassie someday in the next 5 years well thats the plan anyway....
MAte i hope 2 get 2 days in fishing saturday i will be taking my boat out and trying a few secret spots over here i have been told about from a charter operator....and on the sunday i have a snapper charter....

gday mick...mate sorry to hear about the bad news mate it has been on the front page of the paper down here (tim hawkins) mate it really makes you wonder if the world has fianlly gone mad..what a sensless waste of life, something that these sort of people dont seem to care about...mate if there was ever a time that australian;s should take a look at the type of people we are importing into this country it is right now...mate what i am about to say may sound racist... i dont uasually have a problem with other races of people but i think mate that the time has come to shut the gate..enought is enought this also includes tourists from such countrys...stuff the tourist dollar mate i dont think its worth it...anyway mate thats only my opinion......mate no fishing for me this weekend it is truely gale force down here with buckets of water just to make me even more pissed of...mate it hasent been a total waste of a day cause i went to the dive shop today to get some stuff to service my dive compressor so i tore it down today and give it a run so that i am ready to attack on the 2nd of nov..mate it seems that my thoughts have turned more to the diveing side of things this week and i prolly wont do as much fishing soon until the tuna turn in a few months, then i am going to be trying to juggle the too as best as i can....mate i hope the weather is kinder to you than it is for me mate and you get a good day for your charter tommorow...good luck mate and look after ya self.....brian
